U THE QUEEN REGENT,"i.
U THE QUEEN REGENT," i. By BEATRICE HERON-MAXWELL, Author of The Adventures of a Lady Pearl Broker," lC What May Happen," &eo I CHAPTER I.—Continued. f I Outside the Dominion. I She was silent then, looking down and thinking, apparently requiring no answer from me. Mr. Haste tells me," she resumed, "that he happens to know all about you. Mr..Meri- vale, and is able to confirm your capabilities. He mentions here three references, who are all —her glance swept round to Beecher with an encouraging smile—"that one could wish. Lord Beecher's reputation as one of the straightest' of the English aristocracy is not unknown to me." It was amazing—the manner of this woman —and still more incredible that it did not seem out of place in her. She permitted herself to make this directly personal remark with as much ease as a reigning sovereign might display in graciously recalling some point in favour of a foreigner presented at Court. Yet one could only feel that such notice was as void of offence or patronage as it was of gaucherie; she held the position, and she was capable of doing what she pleased with it. My boy haa had little tuition as yet." she said. I have been waiting until his health was fully assured. I shall ask you to under- take only his English education and the personal management of him. There will be other instructors for languages, and special branches of learning. The English side of him is the one I want developed most; a love of sport—hunting, shooting, swimming, row- ing-athletics of all kinds. To rule other men it is well to have a superiority in manly qua-lities as well as in mental ones." I bowed as an expression of agreement with this theory, but she still did not expect me to speak. She was absorbed in the develop- ment of her own ideas; and I had no objection to waiting my turn. "There will be a. few necessary restrictions in his life," she went-on, dne to his position. But apart from these, I should wish it to be the simple healthy life of any boy of his age." Do you intend him to go to a public school?" I inquired. Her answer was emphatic. Certainly not; that would break the thread and destroy the sequence of his training. He will travel aa he gets older-but always in your company and mine." I forebore to glanee at Beecher, feeling I that the matter must be taken seriously or not at aJI. Mrs. Vanrenen caught the flicker of a smile in my eyes perhaps; at all events she said, with a touch of ooldness: "Yon are amused, Mr. Merivale." I was wondering." I said, if there were any room for originality in this scheme of yours." On whose sideP" she answered. Yours or his?" On either." Of course. The restrictions do not impede that. Mr. Haste gave you no details, I tbinjtl" I None." She took a photograph from the writing- I table and handed it ttf me. Here is a. bird's-eye view of our domain," she said. It is an island, as you see. I I bought it two years ago, and have been wait- ing to go into residence there until the Castle was put into proper order for us. It had failed into ruin and required rebuilding and furnishing. This has taken a long time." It is a. lovely place," I observed, but I ise the name. Where does one find Sealand on the map?" At present, nowhere. You would know it under a different name, which, however, I have discarded. There are documents on the island that tend to prove it was a principality in old days. I see no reason why this should not be revived." Again discretion recommended silence. I began to perceive the drift of her thoughts, and to understand that this post contained more unusual elements than I had imagined. As tutor to Mrs. Vanrenen's son I should have the honour of training an aspirant to petty sovereignty. I handed the photograph on to Beecher, who looked at it, remarked, Very interest- ing," and took it acrosa to the table. As he passed the picture on the easel, he said: "Is this your little son, Mrs. Vanrenen?" A light flashed into her eyes; her soil was the keynote of her life evidently. Yes-that is Royal," she said. Would you like to see him. Mr. Merivale?" I should be very glad to." She touched a hand-bell, and when a maid appeared at the folding-door, said: Please tell Master Royal that I want him at once, and ask the Countess if she would kindly come down to me, too." The Countess Fenella. Bartelot is going with me to Sealand," she added, turning to us, and a moment later, when the doors opened once more, we feltr-or at least I did- that the island had gained in attractiveness by this further addition to its iuture inhabitants. Fenella, let me present you to Lord Beecher and Mr. Merivale." A sweeping bow, a mischievous glance from the merriest eyes in the world, veiled instantly by the descent of long dark lashes, and the Countess had passed on and taken her seat by Mrs. Vanrenen, loosing at the same time her little white be-ringed hand from the clasp of her boy-worshipper. As he laughingly snatched at her wrist, she bent her dark head over his fair one, whisper- ing-but I caught what she said: "Royalty has duties as well as privileges; attend to your guests, sir." Her smiling lips brushed his cheek, and she gave him a little push towards me, breaking into a ripple of laughter as she caught my eye and realised that I was watching her. As for the child, after a long grave look at her, he turned to me, and shaking hands with a directness of touch and manner that j was beyond his years, passed on to Beecher. You are a. good subject for photography," said Beecher. I should have known you ] anywhere from that." He pointed to the picture on the easel. j I ought to be," replied Royal, quietly, if practioe is any good. I have been taken a great many times. What does it remind you of?" Beecher considered. Of going to the dentist, most I think." I have never been to one, so it couldn't. It makes me think I am in church. So when they tell me to smile I feel I can't." Same sensation as I have," admitted Beecher. They were getting quite confldental, and RoyaJ, seating himself in a large chair, with his hands laid on its huge arms on either side, was evidently prepared to converse at any length, and on any subject. "Isn't he charming?" said the Countess to me in a low voice. I murmured assent, and my eyes must have conveyed a. oomplimsnt, for she blushed; the brilliant colour flooding her cheeks making her look like a gipsy; indeed, not only in colouring, but in features a.nd movements she resembled a Bomany. The superb dark eyes and hair, which rippled in a thousand yaeruit twists ao& the aquiline BOM.. the full scarfet lips, and a certain free wild grace of gesture, all suggested a nomadic- ancestry. You are interested in Besl&nd?- she asked. You are, perhaps, going with oa there?" I glanced towards Mrs. Vanrenen, for this was a matter I could not decide for myself, and she said slowly: The question is under- discussion between us. What is your personal inclination, Mr. Merivale?" To accompany you, Mrs. Vanrenen." She glanced towards her boy, who was stfll entertaining Beecher, then back at me. "MayI write to you to-morrow?" she said. I bowed and rose. I will hold myself at your command until then." She extended her hand; the Countess and Royal followed suit, and two minutes later Beecher andi I were driving away from the, Carlton. Well," I said inquiringly. I wanted Beecher to put our joint impressions into words, if only for the sake of correcting them where he seemed at fault. "A nnique woman!" answered Beecher. Wliich?" The other one didn't count," he answered. Which was the other one' ?" He gave a short laugh. ")(a.da.me haa chossn her dame d'honneur well; they make a capital contrast. There should be no lack of colonists for Sealand. I need not ask your decision, Merivale. By the way, did she mention any time for starting?" She said nothing definite in any. way. I am to expect, a letter to-morrow." We were silent then, and the only other reference Beecher made to our morning experience was at lunch. West-another old Merton man-looked 08 up at lunch time, and asked me what my; plans were. I just touched on the possibility of Sealand, and Beecher said: "Have you ever come across any one called Vanrenen in your American trips, West?" "Why, certainly," said West. "The hand- somest woman I have ever seen was called Vanrenen—enormously rich, too." "Any particular line?" "Philanthropic, I think; seriocis-minded anyway. Bepa t.a. tion P- Intact." "Did you know her well?" As well as most people did, I fancy. She had no intimate friends—or very few. People rather aimed at going to her house because she was exclusive. Where did you know her?" I don't know her yet," said Beecher. "1 have only met her once—but I probably. shail later on." It seemed likely, for I did not remember Beecher having ever evinced as much interest in any woman before. In fact, I fancied we should both see a good deal of Mrs. Vanrenen and her "contrast" in the near future. t CHAPTER II. Betwixt and Between. How h esrae about tbat-Mss, Vsorsaes* accepted Beecher's offer to place his yacht. Sphynx at her disposal for the voyage to Sealand I did not quite know; but it seemed at the time a very ordinary and natural sequence to a series of meetings- pending my definite engagement by and with her. It was on the day that we ratified our treaty of agreement that Beecher, after a discussion with Royal as to the merits of different crafts, backed an English yacht against any American one for speed and staying powers, and proceeded to endorse his opinion by stating that he would guarantee to land the whole party at Sealand in a shorter space of time than they would require by any other route. Royal, always in earnest, even over his play, told his mother that if anything could reconcile him to his new home it would be to travel there on the Sphynx, and Mrs. Vanrenen capitulated immediately. It occurred to me more than onoe to be exceedingly glad that she had, for our method and number of travelling partook of the nature of a pageant, and I share the national dislike for ostentatious voyaging. There were a good many of us to begin with, and we were all of us destined to proceed together to Sealand, if it had not been-ifor Beecher's timely thoughtfulness. By judi- cious suggestions as to limitations he managed to cut us down to a mere select party of five-Mrs. Vanrenen, the Countess, my pupil and I, and a man named Craven- Smith, whose office seemed to be that of Comptroller to the Household. He was the professor of varied and ill-assorted acquirements, and I took a marked dislike to him from the moment we met, a feeling to which he responded by conceiving a warm and enthusiastic friend- ship for me. We took a reduced retinue of personal servants with us, the rest being sent on ahead by steamer in order to prepare for our arrival. Croxton—never more Admirable than when at sea, where he steadfastly refused to allow Nature to upset any of his usual methodical arrangements—went also, aDd although his expressionless face betrayde no, opinion on the subject of these new friends of Beecher's, I could see that he had mentally, labelled them On appro," and placed them on a shelf reserved for those who held precarious tenure of office. Once. however—but this was on the high Be as midway to Sealand-I caught a gleam of approval in his eyes when they were bent on Royal, and I noticed a growing intimacy, between these two incongruous beings. Royal conversed with him from the first with ease and confidence, and snatches of their conversation that reached me at times showed me that they had topics of mutual interest. "Which would you rather be. Oroxton," inquired Royal, if yoa had your choice--& ting or a sailor?" Croxton debated, having apparently no marked learning towards either vocation, and said that it depended onr their duties in either case and whether he oould have his evenings out. (To be continued).
