"THE QUEEN REGENT,"
"THE QUEEN REGENT," By BEATRICE HERON-MAXWELL, • Author of The Adventures of a Lady Pearl Broker," What May Happen," Ac. I CHAPTER 1I.Continued. I Betwixt and Between. But if you were at sea," remarked Royal, evenings out wouldn't be much good." Croxton agreed; in that, case he should take the other situation, he thought. "Of course, you could have them right enough as a king," continued Royal, "and as many of them as you liked, only every one would know who you were." This apparently was an acknowledged draw- back to both of them. One might make it treason," observed Royal, for any one to recognise a king on his evenings out. But I would rather be a sailor myself and be jolly. Only mother wants me to be a king, so I must. I don't think," he added wistfully after a pause, that women quite understand these things, eh. Croxton?" No, sir. Ladies are inquisitive as a rule." Though whether Croxton meant the adjec- tive in its ordinary sense or not, history does not reveal. He had a knack of using long words in a wholly irrelevant manner at times. We seemed after the first few hours to hav.e settled down into couples, Beecher devoting himself to the Countess, and -rs, Vanrenen, therefore, having to fall back on me. Craven- Smith did not appear to count; he was one of those people who are always odd-man- out. After the first few hours of companionship and the progress in intimacy that a leisurely breakfast together at sea always promotes, it seemed as though our mutual relations had assumed a new aspect. The Cosatess, gay and frank from the first, was now entirely at her ease and on the merriest of terms with all of us; and Mrs. Vanrenen appeared to have accepted Beecher as a personal friend and—dropping the question of tutorial ceremony between herself and me-to look upon me in something of the same light. It struck me once or twicft that, though she preferred conversation with our host, she resigned any privilege of demanding attention from him in favour of Fenella because she thought-as I did-that the bright eyes of the little Countess grew brighter in the vicinity of Beecher. I And I fancy that Beecher, perceiving this, yielded to it with apparent readiness in order to disguise a stronger inclination that would have led him to devote himself in a different quarter. The one subject Mrs Vanrenen had at heart was evidently the future career of her son, and I saw her eyes glow and soften one day when Beecher playfully called him King Royal of Sealand. Royal himself displayed a chivalrous devo- tion to her, and an implicit obedience to her lightest wish, that -argued a strong and dependable nature; and made her ambition j for him both more justifiable and more probable of reaJisation. His manner to me was the happiest mixture of respect and c.onfidence, with a little touch of something the yacht at dawn, and gave him some object lessons in swimming. I wa.s well content to let my influence establish itself over him gradually, aiming at his fearless confidence at first, the spontaneous confidence of a boy that is not to be bought or cajoled or coerced, and that gives you a firmer grip than any imposed authority. Mrs. Yanrenen, beyond asking my opinion as to a liberal classical education once, made no reference to our future campaign of learn- ing; and we conversed on general topics as the moment or the mood suggested. Countess Fenella is a oompatriot of yours, Mrs. Vanrenen?" I observed, as we both looked towards her where she sat talking with animation to Beecher, who was steering. "On her father's side, yes. Her mother Vrae a Hungarian, and Fenella inherits the title from her. She is really Countess Czarzah, but as her father's name is Bartelot she drops the other for ordinary social use. We take our own way in these matters in America, you know, and do not wait for precedents." You say we,' but unless you had told me so yourself I should not have imagined you were American." "I am a French-Canadian by birth. But I have lived in America all my life. It is my country by adoption." This accounted for her features and complexion, both quite different to any American type. Her hair—I could not decide what colour it was—held so much warmth and light in its waves that if her skin had been a shade less purely exquisitely white, the effect would have been too pronounced, even bizarre perhaps; such hair as you find in Southern France, where for generation after generation the sun has played hide-and- seek, and burnt its glow unhindered into the crisp wide ripples. Her eyes, too, deep blue, which the shadow of dark lashes turned to violet, did not suggest the cool, collected temperament of a Yankee, but rather the imaginative Southern one that conceives and wills its conception into existence. I wae an orphan at five years," continued Mrs. Vanrenen, resting her chin on her hand and looking dreamily across the sea, and with only just enough money left me by my parents to keep me from charity. The sisters of St. Hilaire took me into their convent and gave me their best in food and clothing for body and mind. It was a monotonous, blameless life." You were happy?" I asked. Negatively," she answered. I could not have told what it was I needed besides, nor that I wanted anything. My desires seemed to me then only dreams without foundation or possibility. Mr. Vanrenen probably recognised them; he was a good judge of character." ""You met him how—and where?" Her manner, more intimate than ever before, seemed to invite a demand for confidence. He came to the village to see some mines. You know they called him the Metal King in 'Frisco. Whatever he took up-silver, copper, platinum—all turned to gold in his hands. People who followed his lead are the richest in the States now." You must have been very young-a mere child, if you will let me say so?" I was only sixteen and still at my lessons. The sisters were as startled as I was when he made me an offer of marriage; and advised me to say yes. They knew nothing about love, nor did I; -t seemed the solution of a difficulty, and to me it meant experiment, enterprise, a chance of trying my wings in the open." She paused, and after musing for a time went on: "We travelled continuously for a month, and I had no idea money made the difference it did. I took everything for granted. Don't you know that feelipg, Mr. Merivale?" Explain it to me," I said. I was like a pet that is bought by a rich woman and wears a silver collar, and fares sumptuously; I thought everyone had much the same experience—special saloons, fast steamers, extra trains, all formed part of a rather fatiguing jprocees, getting from ou place to another. Until one day; it was the first time I consciously criticised my husband's character." She was still looking over the sea; it seemed, as if this recapitulation of her early life were more an outspoken thought, a soliloquy, than a wish to make me better acquainted with it. Yet I felt a little flattered; for it struck me that possibly few people knew evem M much as she was telling me. I waited silently for her to continue. "We were at Detroit station," she resumed; the express had stopped to change engines, and I was walking up and down the platform, when a woman ran past me. She had a baby in her arms and two more clinging to her skirt, and several parcels to carry. She wanted to get to Denver, where her husband was working, and she had just lost her ticket, and had no money to get another. I was going to give her some money when Maple— that was my husband—stopped me. He sent his valet to buy her a ticket instead. After- wards he explained to me his theory as to assisting the poor; it did not coincide with mine. I thought of that woman and her children all the way to San Francisco." There are, no doubt, hundreds of such cases," I said. She was fortunate in enlisting your sympathy." She made me feel wicked-for the first time in my life. I rebelled against the injustice that gave me more than I desired or deserved, and that deprived her of the littl& she had. I told my husband how it affected me, and he answered me with platitudes. I recognised the ruling trait of his character: it was to spend money only where the spend- ing produced more. To give it, except as a means to an end, was almost a crime in his eyes. It was an awakening to me. I under- stood why he lavished jewels upon me—why he encouraged me to spend enormous sums upon dress; why my carriages and horsea were the best that money could procure. It was to establish his reputation as a man of millions more firmly in the eyes of the moneyed section of society. And when we went to Boston, and he insisted on my living in a round of unceasing gaiety and publicity, I saw that he had married me because he believed that my ambition wonl converge into the lines of his; that I should be willing as well as a capable assistant in mak- ing his name known through the length and breadth of the world." She had not looked at me once while she spoke, and I had been watching unhindered the varying expressions on her face. It had lost for the time its usual repose; her lips had been tremulous with feeling more than once. I began to see that she was saying all this as the working out of an explanation to herself —more than to me—of what had led up to her present attitude of mind and intention. And this you did not wish to be?" I said quietly. I wanted to be guided, not ruled," she answered; "loved, not admired. I witnt" a home, and some one to care for it, aad for me. I felt inexpressibly lonely. Life seemed to me -one long, -wearisome display. We drifted farther apart every day—toy husband and I, and when he went on his next long journey I did not accompany him. Instead I stayed quietly at home—or rather indoors— for none of the huge houses he owned in every important city seemed homelike to me. And I read all day-books, papers, every-, thing that could teach me the world. Thall was the lesson I wanted to learn." "It is a lesson that takes a lifetime to master, as a rule," I said, and that is aa, well left alone at sixteen." She looked full at me for the first time. "I think you are right, Mr. Merivale. But when one is wooed, and married, and widowed at sixteen, the world seems to have exhausted its teaching—in a practical -sense, at all events." A widow at sixteen! Truly she had had a strange life, this girl of twenty-five, who had sounded the depths of womanhood before sh3- came to woman's estate. "He never returned from that journey." she said. And his death was as charaoter- istic as his life had been. One thought of him as a man who had not time even to be ill. It was as though Death itself recognised thia, and when the inevitable time came did not claim a moment more than was necessary- from him. He was at a board meeting of ai ilew mining company, and, as chairman. was making a very able i-peech-so they told me. Suddenly he stopped, frowned, put his hand to his heart, and said resolutely: 'Gentlemen,, that is all I have to say.' They believed for some minutes that he had concluded his, speech and taken his seat in the usual way- Then they saw that he was dead." She was speaking now in a low voice with at vibration of sadness in it, yet more as if she were telling some one else's story than hea; own. It is so long ago, and he was such a stranger to me," she said, it seems to me now like a dream. I felt at the time as if the burden of living and supporting the weight of so many dollars was too overwhelming. But when Royal came to me it was all quite easy. I could not change the entire world, but I could make a little corner of it into a new one for him, I thought. There shall be no. poor in Sealand; no one shall be sick or sorry; if money can alleviate their suffering." The sadness had gone from her voice; it had a ring of determination and courage in it, and her face was lit up with a great enthusiasm. We had sailed right into the sunset, and far away on 'the horizon, where the red" deepened to purple and merged into a haze of sea and sky, one narrow streak of darkness; seemed to indicate a distant shore. The inspiration of her thoughts and hopes was upon me; I looked towards this new land with a feeling as if I, too, would be a, pioneer of a fresh order of civilisation and humanitarianism. Her ambition seemed to me a noble one; to turn her life, her ability. her enormous wealth, into a channel that should make them of best use to her fellow creatures. (To be continued)
