I "THE QUEEN REGENT," ..
I "THE QUEEN REGENT," By BEATRICE HERON-MAXWELL, Author of The Adventures of a Lady Pearl Broker," What May HappeD:" Ac. I SYNOPSIS OF PREVIOUS CHAPTERS. Mrs. Yanrenen. a wealthy widow, has pur- chased the islet of Sealand, an ancient principality, where she purposes founding a Ltopia, over which her son, Royal, is to reign. The narrator is tutor to Roval. and the other principal figures in the picture are Lord Beecher, a friend of the tutor, and a lively countess. who is friend to Mrs. Vanrenen. On the island they meet the leading men, prominent amongst whom I is Lafarne, an innkeeper, round whom mystery and plottings seem to settle early I m the story. I CHAPTER VI. Continued. I Shoals and Quicksands. Phoena and her cavalier had reached the strip of orchard on the other side, and Cupid's messenger in the shape of Jaspar Lafarne. her cousin, known as Jape, had made haete to deliver his missive. Lafarne himself, emerging at that moment from the inn, had seen the transaction, and was now making straight for his daughter. Hendry Gosselin stopped dead, muttering, "I shall only make it worse. She'll be more scared if she sees me." Scared, indeed, now that I was near enough to see, she looked. Her brown eyes, filling with sudden tears. glanced this way and that, as though seeking some hole or corner to hide in; her lips, ae pale ae her cheeks, quiTered; she waa a brown-haired, delicate-faced girl, fragile and refined looking. She was too agitated and alarmed to hide the letter, and her father, ae soon as he came up to them, snatched it out of her hand. I "What's this?" he thundered; "who wantc I to send you letter by Jape?" Jape was by this time demonstrating that presence of mind is sometimes compatible with absence of body; I saw his heels flash round the haystack in mid-air. "FaFther," faltered Phoena, "I and then she broke down and buret into sobs. I'll teach him to play postman behind my back," stormed Lafarne, and grasping the letter in both hands he was about to tear it in half. But an interruption occurred. In a. few flying strides Hendry Gosselin had joined the group and confronted Lafarne. The letter's from me," he said, and it's for her. You've no right to it. Give it back to me." Lafarne turned grey with rage under his sun-brown. They were about the same height, he and young Gosselin, and the immense strength of the older man's figure was matched by the agility of the younger. Out of my yard," said La-farne with threatening gesture. "Not until you give the letter to one or other of us," answered Hendry steadily, fold- ing his arms. They eyed one another like angry dogs. Phcena caught at Craven-Smith's arm, terror staying her tears. Don't let them fight," she gasped. And at this moment a new interruption broke up the situation. Round the corner from the drive in the front of the inn swung the Ralli-car, and the little Countess, her face dimpling with amuse- ment, demanded what we were all looking so solemn about. "la this your daughter, Mr. Lafarne ? she asked. Mayn't I shake hands with yoo, Miss Lafarne ? Phoena stepped up to her side and took the little hand, offered with such ready grace, gratefully. We are having a dispute," she said simply, and glanced towards Craven-Smith, whose complacency had not deserted him. What about ? demanded Penella won't some one explain ? I strolled up and lifted my hat to Lafarne. It's a Question of a letter," I said to Fenella. The letter's mine, Miss, and it was meant for her," said Hendry, but her father won't let her have it." Oh, Mr. Lafarne," smiled the Countess, you are surely not one of those dreadful fathers one reads of in fairy tales--I didn't know they really existed." Lafarne looked both ashamed and annoyed, but he bridled his tongue. "Please," continued the Countess, bending down and flashing a brilliant glance into his eyes, give Miss Lafame her letter. In America we women get our own way without asking for it, Mr. Lafarne-but even in Sear land I suppose you don't refuse us when we do ask." She held out her hand for the document of discord, and Lafarne, with a frown, yielded. Hendry watched the Countess and Phcena like one fascinated it was as though a little brown hedge-sparrow and a tropical humming- bird had foregathered by the way. Phcena took the note with a murmured word of thanks and went straight to him with it. "Tou had better keep it, Hendry," she said, and in a hurried whisper she added, Go—please go." Hendry's face expressed more than one emotion as he took it, and, slowly withdraw- ing his gaxe from her, let it fall on Craven- Smith. a spasm of rage contracted his features, but he did her bidding, and without another word strode into the field and away back to the town. Craven-Smith, whose face wae an anomaly, for it was marked by an habitual frown and fixed smile, looked after him with a deepening of both. "Who is that fellow?" he asked of Lafarne. Phoena had slipped away towards the inn. "An insolent fool," said Lafarne, "eon of old Gosselin. If it wasn't for his father, who's an old friend and a decent fellow enough, I'd horsewhip him." I telegraphed a signal to the Countess, and she eaid in obedience to it Now which of you two is going to have-the honour of escort- ing me home. Mr. Craven-Smith, I think it's your turn." He had no resource but to comply when she made a-n imperative gesture of invitation and, with a sidelong look at the inn, he got into the Ralli. You most find your way back as best you can. Mr. Merivale," said the Countess, and drove off with her unwilling captive. May I have a moment's taJk with you ? I said. Lafarne looked a refusal, but assented, and led the way round to the front door, through the wide thatched porch, and across the hall to the inner bar. What will you take ? he said, with grim politeness. Nothing, thanks. I merely want to know what arrangements you would like me to make for the removal of the record chest to the Castle. I can send for it at anv hour VOn. fJ7 please. It is in the cellar here I understood you to say ? We were alone in the bar, and the door Ilea.ding to the room beyond was closed. Underneath the drugget, square with the corner of the bar, was the outline of what appeared to be a. trap-door in the iloor. Lafarne gave a quick glance towards this. and I concluded that it was the opening to the cellar, the idea flashing across my mind that a drugget was a superfluity in the bar of an inn. especially if it impeded access to the cellar. "What are you looking uP" said Lafarne uneasily. Ie I f" I benD. bat he cut me That you saw-some one ? Some one ?" I echoed, wondering why he should ask. The room was empty save for. ourselves, and I had my back to the window where, then, could I see some one ? There's a singular effect of light in that corner," he said, half apologetically I have seen it myself. It is like a person's shadow. I thought you were noticing it." His sentences were abrupt and nervous he was a different man to the spokesman of the morning-the truculent bully of a few mo- ments before. I'll send the chest up myself." he went on. some time during the week. It's difficult to get at. and heavy." His brow and upper lip were beaded as though with sudden heat he wiped them impatiently. If," he said tentatively, Mra. Vanrenan is thinking of reconstituting the State of Sealand she will need officers at the head of various departments." "Quite so." Has she ? "—he hesitated—" in what way would they be appointed P Either by her personal decision or by the votes of the people. I should imagine." The Sealanders are slow to rouse, but very quick when roused," he went on I have a good deal of influence over them. I shall do my best to use it on Mrs. Yanrenen's behalf. There are some disaffected here who resent her arrival; that young Gosselin amongst them-a bad lot. But I will do my beet for Mrs. Vanrenen." "She will be pleased to hear it." I made answer; "she prefers willing service. and she is a lady whom it is an honour and pleasure to serve." I took my leave then. and had turned the corner of the houee when I found I had left my stick behind. I went back to get it. and as I crossed the hall towards the bar I heard Phoena say with a sob, Oh, father, don't say such dreadful things. She was standing in the doorway of the inner room, and her father facing her did not see me. Get you gone." he said furiously, "before I do you a mischief." Then her frightened eyes met mine, and with a little cry she stepped backwards into the room, closing the door after her. Lafarne, turning quickly, saw me. but be- fore he had time to speak I had found my stick, and saying, I came back for this," I left him. If ever murder and madness lurked in a man's eyes they were peering out of Lafarne'» then, and as I walked up to the Castle I felt a misgiving that we were going to have trouble with him. CHAPTER V! Lese Majeste. It was a pretty picture Our fencing lesson was just over, and the Countess, who insisted on sharing it as a. pupil (a most intractable one;, had concluded a bout with Royal, allowing him to beat her to one knee and keep her at the point of his foil, where she remained smiling up at. him. The two handsome faces were glowing with excitement, the lithe young figures, supple and tense, full of nervous energy. Through the stained glass windows of the gun-room the May sunshine fell in patches of brilliant colour on the little group, and il- luminated the sombre background of panelled wall on which hung arms of every description and nationality, collected from the most noted armouries in the world. A few paces off Mrs. Vanrenen stood watch- ing them, one hand restraining Czar, the Borzoi, who wished to join in the contest. She was in a dress of white over black. ethereal and shimmering, with a great cluster of pale roses at her waist and a wide- brimmed drooping hat that shadowed her eyes. I could not see the expression of them. but I could guess it I knew just how she looked when Royal was their object. Bravo," said Beecher's voice at the door. and Mrs. Vanrenen turned to greet him, while Fenella, springing to her feet, ran, followed by Royal, to the corridor and disappeared. I must ask you to excuse me," said Mrs. Vanrenen almost immediately. I ha.ve a great deal of work to do this afternoon. Mr. Merivale, you will look after Lord Beecher. won't you, until the Countess returns, and we shall meet at tea." She moved towards the door, but Beecher interposed. I had noticed the barrier, slight and almost imperceptible, that her will imposed between them, and I knew that to a man of Beecher's temperament it was as good, or as bad, as a direct repulse. In common with many-other men, he disliked and seldom risked a refusal on any subject. Her invitations to the .castle were extended to him cordially and oon- stantly, but she invariably delegated the en- tertaining of him to some one else. Was it because she knew instinctively that Fenella was not the rose—only near the rose ? I thought it must be so, although she was the least vain, as well as the least selfish, of women. But to-day a spirit of resistance was roused in Beecher, and he said May we not help you with your work ? I should count it a privilege. What are these ? He pointed to a. roll of paperg-which she was holding, and she put them down on a table and spread them out before us. "These are the new plans," she said, a.1M I should be glad of your opinion aboqrt tbem. Here is the Town-hall, here the new Market Place, here the Post Office, and there must be the church." She indicated the spot, where there was a circular flight of steps leading up to an old. stone cross, such as you see on English viHagei greens, relics of the time when holy fathers journeyed from place to place and preached from these open-air primitive pulpits to the country folk. "The old church, which was at this end of the town," Mrs. Vanrenen said, "has fallen to pieces gradually. Apparently the people were too lazy to repair it. They have services of an unorthodox kind in a little chapel, with lay preachers, who speak as the spirit moves them. Sometimes women preach they hold the Jezreelite belief that these are the latter days of the world when the handmaidens may uplift their voices in the Temple. I nm study- ing the Sealand character with interest, but I have not arrived at any conclusion yet." CTo be continued).
