I "TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY,"
"TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of Robert Miner, Anarchist," "StaSord, a Romance," Ae. PART THE SECOND. [ CHAPTER VI. A Paragraph in a Newspaper, As Denver was coming out of the office of the "Pictorial Pioneer," the paper he was engaged upon, about five o'clock that even- ing, a newspaper boy passed him shouting. "The Shadwell Ghost: Extraordinary Story!" Denver bought a copy, promising himself some amusement from the latest canard of "T he Flat Catcher," and going into the. "Cheanire Cheese" to get a glass of hot whisky, for the night was bitterly cold, opened the sheet, and the first thing his eye fell upon was a para- graph headed in very black type: "A SHADWELL GHOST. WAS IT AN ILLUSION. A STRANGE POLICE-COURT CASE." Denver was very much startled by reading what followed:? "At the Thames Police-court this morning & burly, trenchant-looking fellow, who gave the name of Mike Fennell, was brought up before the magistrate on a charge of attempting his life by throwing himself mto the river. The man looked very white and haggard, and had a scared, haunted expres- sion in his bloodshot eyes, and it was evi- dent from the twitching of his face and his trembling hands that he had been drinking heavily. His statement was to the effect that some weeks back the ghost of a young lady, whom he knew to be dead, had come up and spoke to him as he stood at the top of River-lane, and that she had haunted him ever since, until, no longer able to endure the horror, he had resolved to put an end to his life. His wife, a poor but decent-look- ing woman, who seemed borne down by trouble, assured the magistrate that it was all a delusion, thftt she believed the young lady was living, and the idea arose from heavy drinking—that lie would wake up in the night and scream tha-t snakes were crawling up the walls and over the bed, and that the young lady was in the midst of them. 'Oh, I've had a dreadful life with him, your worship,' the woman said, and burst into tears. Here a constable, in pri- vate clothes, who was in the court, wrote something on a slip of paper and passed it up to the bench, and the magistrate asked the young lady's name. 'Oh. your worship,' broke in the woman, 'don't press the ques- tion; it would give her and her friends such pain if their name was mixed up in such a story, and it's all a delusion, I do assure you.' 'You lie, and you know it,' said the I man, turning on her savagely, know she's dead as well as I do, and I'm going to make a clean breast of it, for I ain't agoin to burn in hell fire to please you nor any- body else.' "Then the magistrate asked him to give the lady's name, but after that burst he be- came dogged and sullen. 'All in good time; I ain't a goin' to be hurried by anybody.' So Mike Fennell was remanded for a week that the doctor might examine into the state of his mind. As he was taken out of the dock the woman called out, 'Don't go and bring trouble on the people whose bread you've eat, Mike, and all for nothing.' The police seem to be under the impression that this man holds the key to a mysterious crime which up to now has baffled Scotland Yard; they are very reticent, and will not Otter a word upon the subject. But our in- defatigable investigator is on the scent, and I mor than once he has proved himself more I than a matc? for the caution of the t, no we advise our readers to look out for our Ertta^.¥jiwciftl, in wàWb they will And some startling revelations." Denver at once grasped the fact that Mike Fennell was the man whom Miss Vanstone spoke to and so terror-struck on the nignt that he first met her; but his amaze- ment at this extraordinary coincidence was lost in the revelation of Lilian Griceson's death, for, in spite of Martha's denial, he had no doubt that Mike spoke truly, and that the woman had some motive for desiring to con- ceal the fact. "Poor Lilian! poor Lilian!" he kept on repeating to himself, his eyes still fixed upon the paragra/ph, though he saw not a word of it. As he had told Miss Vanstone, the old love was dead, but gentle Lilian had been very dear to him in the old days, and he could not forget those times nor the girl who had been his playmate and his boy sweetheart. "There is some dark mystery, some foul play here, or why should this Fennell be so terrified; why should Agatha show such con- sternation? and, by God! I'll never rest till I have sifted it to the bottom and avenged her. He did not utter these words aloud, but his face was so pale, and his looks were so wild, that he drew the attention of the other occu- pants of the bar upon himself, perceiving which he beat a retreat. His mind was made up as to what he would do. He would go down to Shadwell at once, find out Martha Fennell, and never leave her until she had told him all she knew concern- ing Lilian Griceson's fate. He saw that the arrest of Mike Fennell would re-open the case of the Sandlands murder, the police, as we know, having for over a year been searching' for the poacher, and they would not let him go nntil they had drained him dry of evidence. He hiinqelf by coming to the fore would be again entangled in suspicions; but at such a moment he could not think of his own safety, for there was but one burning thought in his heart—ven- geance upon the destroyers of poor Lilian Griceson. Leaving the tavern, he hailed a cab, and told the man to drive him to Rowland-street, where he lodged, for some change in 0 his cos- tume would be prudent before invading the slums of Shadwell. As he was nearing his destination, however, it occurred to him that he ought to show Miss Vanstone the para- graph, and tell her of his plans. So he directed the driver to turn off towards Bed- ford-place. When he alighted at the house the servant toll him that Miss Vanstone went out about an hour previously. So he ran up to her room, laid the newspaper with the paragraph inked round upon her writing table, together with a note, upon which he scrawled Just off to Shadwell to see Fennell's wife-I have horrible suspicions that poor Lilian has been murdered—shall come and see you directly after breakfast to-morrow morning, and tell you the result.—Denver." When Miss Vanstone returned home the first thing her eyes fell upon was the blaok-lined newspaper and the note in her friend's hand- writing. The first much amazed her, the other greatly disturbed her. "If I had been here I should have done all in mj power to dissuade him from going to that horrible place," she murmured. And as she stood twisting the note between her fingers, with sad, thoughtful eyes fixed upon the fire, the dark, chill shadows of impending evil were enshrouding her. She shivered—that ominous shiver that superstition associates with strange footsteps upon our grave. She could not set herself to read or write, but cowered bodingly over the fire, imagining her friend involved in all kinds of danger. How she missed him! It was many an even- ing since he had been absent from her side. What a blank his absence made. Suppose he were never to return. What a terrible thought! She could feel herself grow white to the lips at the mere suggestion. She never realised before how he had grown into her life. All the more she pondered over their relations the deeper sank the conviction that all her happiness was involved in him, until, wrought up to paroxysm, she cried aloud: 1 k "1 love ÀiIQ, I lore him; oh, my darling, if I were to lose you, what would become of me!" And then the overcharged heart found vent in A great burst of tears. When. she went to bed she could not rest, and her brief and interrupted sleep was broken by harassing dreams. She was again in the dim, dreary, squalid Shadwell High-etreet. in the midst of a thick fog; nothing was visible except the coppery blurred light of a lamp, beneath which stood a burly, red-headed, pallid-faced man. She asked him if he could tell her anything of Herbert Denver, and he pointed behind him down a gulf-like lane. Then she found her- self groping in a darkness that could be felt, and could bear the moaning ripple of water. Suddenly her path was barred by a woman's face-the face of Agatha Griceson—but it was a dead face. Then it changed to the exact semblance of her own, and she said to her- self, "This is te dead Lilian Griceson." While she was gazing at it a man's dark, sinister visage took its place-it was the man whom she had seen in the box at the Lyceum. Once again the vision was transformed: a head from which the water was dripping and streaming over the waxen features of a corpse —it was Denver. With a cry she awoke, bathed in perspira- tion. A night light was burning ine room, and so vivid was the impression that she sprang out of bed and gazed wildly about her, fully expecting to encounter the spectres of her sleep. She drew aside the blind and looked out upon the night; the rain was beating against the windows, and a dismal wind was howling through the dark, deserted street. She was filled with horrible fears and imaginings. Whenever she fell into an uneasy doze the broken images of her dream returned, but not distinctively, all was con- fused. Morning, dull and laden with fog, came at last. Over her untouched breakfast she listened intently for Denver's light, bounding footstep. But ten o'clock, his usual hour, was fact merging into eleven, and he did not come. She could endure the suspense no longer. Hastily dressing, she emerged into the fog and drizzle, mounted her bicycle, and rode off to his lodgings. The landlady said that Mr. Denver came home in a cab about six o'clock on the pre- vious evening, and went out again about ten minutes afterwards. She had seen nothing of him since. Something dreadful had happened. She dared not let loose her imagination in con- jectures. What was to be done? Her first impulse was to start for Shadwell. But what could she do alone? If there had been any foul play she would at once become a. help- less victim in the hands of the evil-doera. No, that was not to be thought of. It was not fear for her own safety that deterred her. but the reflection that if anything happened to I her Denver was lost beyond redemption, 00 she alone knew of his destination. There was but one reasonable course of action—to give information to the police. I Before going oat, however, she opened him morning paper to see if it contained any, thing fresh about the man Fennell. I (To be continued).

TOO EXACT.
TOO EXACT. Of Mr. Thomas B. Reed, an eminent American senator, lately deceased, many good stories are told, some, it may be, pare inven- tion. The following. however, related by a friend of the statesman, has the ring of truth. The friend, while travelling in a sleeping car, had been careless enough to leave his gold-framed spectacles lying for a few moments on a shelf in the washing-room. and when he went to look for them they were gone. He immediately put up a written notice in two or three places, describing the spectacles and offering a reward of one dollar for their recovery, but to no purpose. He never seen them again. He mentioned the matter one day to Mr. Reed. "Wben you described the spectacles aad offered a dollar to the finder," asked tha latter, in his accustomed drawl, "were you careful to say they were gold?" "Certainly. "Well, that's the treason you didn't set them," rejoined Mr. Reed. "You should have described them as base metal lacquered. The Millennium hasn't come yet!"
" DOUBLE UP."
DOUBLE UP." A school teacher had some trouble in teach- ing a. little fellow to say "doable 1," "double e," "double 8," &0. But after a. while his efforts were crowned with success, and he was gratified by an extraordinary appearance of interest on the pupil's paxt. In fact, the boy became a double-letter hunter, so much so that, when they reached the lesson concern- ing the early riser, beginning, "Up, up, and sea the i§lmn!" he astonished the master with a new reading. "Double up, and see the sun!" H* read out. with enthusiasm.

UNCOMPLIMENTARY. Two workmen employed on a farm, one & tall man, the other considerably under the average height, had a difference of opinion regarding a. matter they both considered of great importance. "If you don't be quiet, I will put you ia my pocket!" said the big man angrily after some minutes' argument. "Do you think you could?' retorted the smaller one. "Anyhow, if you did, I reckon there would be more sense in your pocket than ever was in your head!"
