"THE QUEEN REGENT,"
"THE QUEEN REGENT," By BEATRICE HERON-MAXWELL, Author of The Adventures of a Lady Pearl Broker," K Wnat May Happen," Ac. SYNOPSIS OF PREVIOUS CHAPTERS. Airs. Vanrenen. a wealthy widow, has pur- chased the islet of Sealand. an ancient Principality, where ehe purposes founding a Utopia, over which her son. Royal, is to reign. r,^e narrat^,r is tutor to Royal, and the other principal figures in the picture are Lord Beecher. a friend of the taWr. and a. lively countess, who is friend to Mrs. Vanrenen. On the island they meet trie leading men, prominent amongst whom is La?arne. an innkeeper, round whom Y8tery and plotting? seem to settle ea?ly In the story. CHAPTER VII. Continued. Lese Majeste. It eeema a curious hybrid miittrre," Bee-cher said, "inherited from. settlers of varied types, I suppose. Your bank is going to be a fine building, Mrs. Ya-nrenen. What is the dotted line near the pier? At present rows of sheds where Lafarne sat at the seat of custom. But it is to be a motor-railway station. Here on the Parade, which will extend for half a mile, will be the Inland Revenue and Mint offices. Craven- Smith tells me that there are no profits forth- coming from Lafarne's Custom account. They have been spent on restoring the pier. Mr. Merivale, what do you think of Mr. Craven- Smith ?' I knew she must have some weighty reaeon for asking me; it was not her way to discuss people idly, and ae a rule she kept business subjects for business hoars. I answered with a question. What was his recommendation to you in the first place? Sentiment—or sentimentality," she con- fessed. "I knew nothing about him except the fact that he lost his work indirectly through me. I withdrew my name from a company to which he was secretary, and it smashed. He came and appealed to me. I was looking for someone to fill the post he occupies, and I felt sorry for him. It seemed a simple remedy." "And what is troubling you about him?" Several things. It is unwise in our present state of evolution to mix up politics and pre- dilections, I think." I assented, adding that he was probably not in earnest. That only makes things worse," she said gravely. Then she rolled up the plans and went away. Craven-Smith is like the unjust steward in the Scriptures, I fancy," observed Beecher, and inclined to make friends with the mammon of unrighteousness. Can he do much of tiiat sort of thing, Merivale? "Not here as yet," I said, "but he seems to me ambitious and not over scrupulous he has plans, no doubt. I wonder if any of her American affairs are in his hands? That's it," replied Beecher you have hit it, Merivale. He will manage a grand coup at a distance and make himself scarce. You must look after him for her. Let us go for a stroll." We took the path that led through the plantation on the cliff side, and as we walked we could hear the voices and laughter of Royal and the C-ounteas, who were evidently just ahead of us. But when we emerged from the trees they were nowhere to be seen. At a distance of about fifty yards from where we stood a winding pathway struck downwards towards the shore, the first bend of it emerging from a fringe of shrubs and turning a sharp corner immediately below us twenty feet or 00 down the precipitous side of the cliff. This is idyllic," said Beecher, looking round but I feel like a lotus-eater. The atmosphere of an island always tends that way. I must be moving on." He had spoken once or twice of cruising to Norway, and I had noticed a growing restless- ness on him the last few days. "I want to take young Gosselin with me," he went on only he hangs back. Good wages and a good berth-but he has lost his head over the girl. Craven-Smith—what a confounded ass he is making of himself-would cool off all the sooner without opposition. Merivale," he added abruptly after a pause, do you think her scheme is practicable? I knew whom he meant. Possibly. It takes only a. few years to make a city nowadays. When there is a flourishing town there "—I pointed towards the straggling streets of the port—" and an electric railway has brought the whole island into focus, the thing may shape itself. But I am doubtful about Royal." In what way ? His bringing up will be lop-sided. Where is his mental adjustment to come from be- tween his duty to himself and his duty to his neighbour? Be has practically no neigh- bour." The Countess makes a. charming playmate for him." Yes but his admiration of her prevents him from ever taking precedence in their games. There is no competition for him, no struggle for the upper hand, none of the essential developments of boyhood." How are the Sealand Rifles coming on? asked Beecher smiling. Recruite come in; but it will take a little time to make soldiers of them. Royal was asking his mother if we should ever have a battle here, .and she admitted it would have to be a very small one. He is to be Colonel- in-Chief, and is looking forward to the arrival of his uniform." A smart lad," said Beecher reflectively. I don't know when I have ever liked & boy so much." Voices floating up to us from the path showed that the two of whom we spoke were approaching, but the overhanging edge of the cliff prevented our seeing them until they reached the bend immediately below us. At the comer, with his back to the rock, stood a boy, shying stones at the circling gulls. Who is that ?*' asked Beecher. I told him it was Lafarne's orphan nephew, known as Jape. At this moment Royal turned round the corner and lifted his cap in his pretty cour- teous manner to Jape. Good morning," he said. H Are you OIl your way to the Castle? The boy laughed insolently. WhaVe that to you ? he answered, and flung a stone pust over Roy's head. I sat down on the edge of the cliff, vrith my legs hanging over, meditating a drop-hardly an easy one, for the path below was narrow and broken. Are you aware that you are trespasknz? broke in Fenella, who had come up to them And do you know to whom you are epeai- ing? You had better mend your manners." I know," answered Jape. He is the son of the fool who has bought Sealand and wants to make him King. But we won't have him nary one of-" His next words were knocked down his throat, for Royal had given him a well- directed blow full in the face. As Jape, made a rush a.t him and the two boys closed, I let myself go and dropped, landing close to them | but I was just too late. Royal lay on the ground, the Countess, kneeling beside him. making frantic appeals, to which he was deaf and dumb, and on his forehead a blood-red bruise was Btartine out. I knelt down too. and. lifting him. 1:iøt.en.od to keart-^tbaak <Jod it beat, J slowly and feeblv-and then I said to Fenfdls6 Go and tell her," for on the path was Mrs. Vanrenen, hastening towards us distraught with fear. She could not speak when she reached ma and I said, for one does not chooee one's wordi at such a moment, Don't be frightened, Zoe. He is only stunned. Ee will come round soon," His eyelids were fluttering, and his lips had parted in a long breath I made a signal of caution to her. She put her hand over his face and said softly: "Better, dear? You have had a fall and it shook you. Let Mr. Merivale carry you to the house." There was no sign of Jape he had diw appeared and she had seen nothing of the fight. Later, when Royal was conscious and lyinj with his head swathed in cool bandages on his mother's sofa, I sought out the Countess, and asked her to explain the occurrence to Mrs. Vanrenen. She was doubtful about the wisdom of doing so, and I was still urging the necessity of it when Mrs. Vanrenen came in quickly. Royal has just told me how it happened." she said vehemently. Mr. Merivale, that boy must be arrested and punished." Her usual equanimity was gone; in its place was an imperious flood of passion, un- reasoning and implacable. She could never have looked handsomer than at this moment; the stormy light in her eyes like the glint of angry waves, and her face dead. white. Had I not better go to Lafarne himself and make a formal complaint against Jape? I suggested it would be difficult to arrest him." Why ? Because it was a fight, and Royal was the aggressor." "But he had insulted Royal and me; Royal had a right to attack him." Most certainly. Still it was a fight. The boy is about the same age, but his heavier build gave him the advantage." You tafce his part?" She spoke in offended astonishment. After doing his best to kill Royal, he is to go soot free. His offence is a double one, for he had no right to say what he did. The island belongs to us—to Royal and me; and those who live on it must treat us with respect." Quite so. I have no doubt Lafarne will see the wisdom of punishing him severely." I shall not leave it to his decision. You wish me to send for Jape, then, and have him brought to the Castle?" Ym!" The Countess had glided away; we were alone. I ventured a deprecation. It will be a mistake." I said. In what way can you punish him without seeming arbitrary? And if it is your wish to gain popularity for Royal, this would not be a. good way to set about it. If 1 may offer my advice-" "I have not asked you for it," she said quickly. I was silent. To rule Scaland I must be firm." ehe went on, still with the same impetuosity. Might is right W -people of this sort. They do Hot. believe in power that hesitates to show itself. Young Lafarne must be made an example of." She paused. You disagree with me entirely, I can eee. Mr. Merivale. You think that I ought to allow anyone who chooses to roam about the Castle grounds, and to be insolent to my son. Supposing that he had killed Royal "Don't let us suppose it," I said; it ia too horrible." She gave me a rapid glance of question, bat my sincerity was evident. He might have," she insisted, and would you still have said that he must go unpunished because Royal struck him first?" I should wish to be just," I answered. under any circumstanoes; and I should also refrain from exacting any penalty that I waa not fully able to enforce." She flashed another glance at me. Our wishes and opinions do not coincide." she said. You think-ine both unjust and unreasonable. Practically, you refuse me your assistance—I will arrange the matter without it. Mr. Merivale." And she swept aw:ay, leaving me amazed and perplexed. She was reaJly angry with me; indeed, her anger had plainly; mastered her self-control; but why? I decided it most be from nervous shock, caused by this sudden alarm and anxiety about the boy whom she worshipped. But the result was the same, no matter what the cause might be. It was an anomalous position. I pondered over it the whole afternoon. Towards evening, when Royal was better ant had fallen asleep, I went to my own room te consider what I should do. Mrs. Vanrenen, whom I had not seen again, would probably not appear at dinner; I should not, therefore, be able to speak to her with- out making a special request to do so. In the morning it would be imperative for us to meet; meanwhile I was under the ban of her severe displeasure. The episode, which seemed so slight at first, had developed into unexpected importance. I was standing at my window looking out into the twilit garden, when a tap at my door roused me from my reverie. An instant later Mrs. Vanrenen was in the room. The surprise I had felt at her outburst of anger was not so great as that which now possessed me; the face softly flushed and kindling with some stir of emotion, the flash as of hidden tears in the eyes, suggesting a. phase of feeling that was new to me-and to her also, I believed. 6he stood for a moment hesitating, and I have the vision of her in my mind to this moment. White draperies fell in heavy clinging folds from her shoulders to her feet; she might have been a statce but for the sunny splen- dour of her hair and the warm, living white- ness of her neck and arms, veiled in some' transparent filmy lace. She wore no orna- ments; even her little hands were bare of rings, and when she stretched them out to me, I read the meaning of her eyes, and took them reverently. Mr. Merivale "-ber voice was low and. tremulous—" I am sorry. You were 4%?to right in what you said. and you were st*H iiaore right to gtv more right to say it. You saved me from a great mistake. I came to confess that I was in the wrong. Are we friends again ?*' The Queen can do no wrong," I said. "To have displeased her meant exile—or paj-don. I am glad to be forgiven." Fenella shows me I add ingratitude to my other shortcomings, she went on. You risked your life in your haste to get to Royal. I shudder when I think how easily you might have missed the pathway in your descent and fallen-Mr. Merivale, .how can I thank you ?" Her hands were still in mine; I lifted them to my lips. She turned, just as she was passing through the door, and ea4d Do what you think best about Jape. I leave it entirely in your hands." Bu1 Jape had already settled the matter for himself, temporarily at all events, as I found in the morning, by disappearing and leaving no trace of his v/hereabouts. Jiaiame muttered dark threats as to » warm reception for prodigal nephews rebel traitors in time to oome; but I fancied that a. gleam of satisfaction in his face beliea them. and t33at Jape would meet wtth 110 worse fate than otbef quasi patriots.
