"TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY,"
"TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of "Robert Miner, Anarchist," "Stafford, a Romance," Ac. I PART THE SECOND. I CHAPTER I-Continued. I The Long Arm of Coincidence. They walked on and on, absorbed in pleasant conversation, as far as the Royal Exchange before they thought about the locality, and during this time Miss Van- stone had revealed so many glimpses of her past that Denver had put together an out- line of her life. She was an orphan, both her parents having died while she was an infant, and she had been brought up by an aunt in the neighbourhood of Torquay. Even as a school-girl she had been a victim to the cacoethes scribendi," and had little poems and stories inserted in Devonshire news- papers, and afterwards in London magazines. So by-and-bye," she s.aid, "I made up my mind to make literature a profession, and came to London. My parents left me suffi- cient to find bread and cheese, so that I am not wholly dependent upon my pen, and I wished to get away from my home and be my own mistress. I It is another coincidence that I have never knowiNfather or mother," said Denver. I -How strange that we should have met, and under such peculiar circumstances," she I observed, thoughtfully. It was at that moment they found them- I selves in the cross currents of omnibuses and cabe at the Mansion House. Of course, you are going westward," he said. You must be tired, let me call a cab." I Not for me, thank you, I'm not the least tired. I'm a capital walker, and London is still a novelty to me, and I am greedy for copy. I have rooms in Bedford-place. But don't let me keep you-I am all right, oh, I go about London at all hours, quite alone, for I have no friends. If there is any place where I could get a cup of chocolate I should be glad of it." As it was eight o'clock the refreshment places in Cbeapside were closed, but they found one open on Ludgate Hill. After they had rested awhile they started again for Holborn. Miss Vanstone stopped at the corner of Museum-street. I And now I must say good-bye," she said, I holding out her hand. Thank you so much." r "May I call upon you?" he asked, without releasing her fingers. She looked up into his face with a quick glance in her beautiful grey eyes that seemed to read his thoughts, and then said, smiling, "If you like. I usually rest from two to four. I would like you to see what I shall write about to-night's adventure. But it will not be done for two or three days; then you may give some hints for improvement." I shall be delighted to be of any help to you. Then it is au revoir." They shook hands and parted. "What a charming girl!" said Denver to himself. How like poor Lilian. What a strange meeting. If I were superstitious I should say there was a fate in it." "What a delightful man! I should like to know about my other s Vacstone's commentary^ J CHAPTER II. Camaraderie. Denver had been rather more than a year in London. As a boy he had quite a talent for drawing; he had taken some lessons, and his sketches were remarkably promising. During his early time in Africa he had amused himself a great deal with his pencil, HTIH sent some of his sketches to an old school-fellow, who had talked of taking up journalism. Not receiving any reply to his last letters he dropped writing, and when misfortune came upon him thick and fast he had little incliuation for the fine arts. During his first days in London, while seeking about in his mind for some means of making a livelihood, the thought struck him that he might turn his talent to account. He made some sketches from memory of scenes and people at the mines, and assured himself that he had not lost his cunning. If he could hunt up that friend with journalistic tendencies he might get a hint as to the best way of introducing them to editors. He found the friend at last, editing a cheap pictorial journal. The friend perceived at once that there were both power and originality in the sketches, that Denver wou'd be quite an acquisition to his not too brilliant staff, and, above all, could be had cheap, which is the predominant idea of the editorial mind. Denver's first care, however, had been to call at the offices of the late Mr. Goodenough, Squire Griceson's former solicitor, in Bedford- row. No one had succeeded to his business. I don't think it was worth keeping on," said Denver's informant, the caretaker of the premises, at least, Mr. Johnson, his manag- ing clerk, said so. Mr. Goodenough was very old and very old-fashioned, and his clients dropped off one by one and went to younger and more energetic men. If you could come across Mr. Johnson he would be able to give you any information you wanted about the business, as he did all the work, and knew more about matters than ever his employer did. He went to Turner and James in Grey's Inn; he was there, I know, a few months; back." To Turner and James Denver at once proceeded, to find that Mr. Johnson, only six weeks previously, had gone to Cape Town on business for the firm, and would not be back for a year or two at least. Denver wrote to Cape Town, stating his case very fully, and asking if Mr. Johnson could furnish him with any clue to the nature of the afore-mentioned papers, that had so long been under the care of the late Mr. Goodenough- At the end of some months Denver received a very curt reply to the effect that it was impossible for Mr. Johnson to enter into any correspondence upon the subject, or hold any further communication with an unknown person. The tone of the letter fully convinced Denver that he had no hope in that quarter. Soon after arriving in London, he had written to Dixon, under cover to Mrs. Fennell, as agreed upon, as he was anxious to repay the money he had borrowed from him. The letter was returned marked Gone away." Consequently, his whereabouts must be un- known. Denver next wrote to the Hall. Again the letter was returned, marked Gone away." Unaware that the suspicions against him had been diverted by the eavesdropping of the police spy. and thinking that he had eluded the vigilance of the detectives, Denver hesitated a long time before he ran the risk of visiting the neighbourhood of Tunbridge Wells. But at last he could endure the suspense no longer, and disguising himselfi in a grey wig and beard, he took train to Clodhurst, the nearest village, where he would be able to glean all the news of Sandlands. An evening in the Red Lion parlour, and the expense of a few glasses of liquor to talkative natives, put him in possesaion of all j that WM known about the croons in whom t he was interested. But what he heard tended only to increase his curiosity. Miss Griceson had left the Hall, which was shut up, and there was no talk of her return. All her letters were forwarded to an addreat in Paris. Nothing had been seen or heard of Mike Fennell since his sudden disappearance, and his wife also had vanished. The police had made every effort to trace him, but without success, as he was supposed to know more about Squire Griceson's murder than any of the witnesses who had been brought up at the inquest. It was fully believed at first," said the landlord of the Bed Lion," that a younj scamp that the Squire had brought up, and who went away to Africa diamond digging or gold digging, and who suddenly returned on the night of the murder, and was the first to find the body, did it. Everybody felt sure of that." Who was this young man, then?" inquired Denver. Ask me another." chuckled the landlord. Most people think he was a by-blow of the Squire's. You see he wanted the boy to marry his niece who's come into everything, and if he'd done that he'd been the heir without any scandal." "And why didn't he?" asked a fanner, who was joining in the conversation. Well, be fancied the daughter, Miss Lilian. and if people's suspicions were true that was out of the question, you see, as they'd 'a been half brother and sister." But wouldn't it have been a queer thing for 'un to have disinherited his own truly begotten child for a niece and a bastard?" put in the farmer. Well, you see there was some screw loose between the Squire and the lady, and nobody that I've met ever could find out what it was, but they never lived together as man and wife for some time before the birth of Miss Lilian. And he was always a good deal more partial to his niece than he was to his daughter; and then she went wrong in the end, went off with some chap, and the Squire closed his doors against her. It is whispered about that she was seen lurking about the Hall on the night of the murder, and the chap with her, and that the police have been doing all they could to trace 'em." At this point of the conversation Denver rose, and, with an abrupt Good night," left the parlour. He could not listen to any more. So this," he muttered to himself, as be strode through the darkness of the night, not noticing, not caring, what direction he was taking, this is the great secret—I am a by-blow,' as they call it, of Mr. Griceson. It's as clear as daylight—doubtless he told Lilian the truth, and that was why she so positively rejected me—that accounts for Dixon's reticence-I see it all-I see it all." And, although doubts lingered as to the absolute truth of his discovery, it fell like a blight upon him; he shunned all company, took no interest in anything-save hie work. and of that did no more than procured him a Ð-.r. living-; be Ãtme moody and morose, all the savour seemed to have been taken out of his life, the future was a blank—drear and hopeless, with only death at the end of the vista. Such was his mental condition when he and Lilian Yanstone first met. But that night it was as though day had dawned after an interminable darkness; he felt like a mar awaking from a sick dream. That bright, sweet, ingenuous, trusting nature, full of hope, enthusiasm, happy visions, suffused in all the roseate glow of youth and youth's romance, had shed some of its warmth upon his arid heart, thawing the ice which encrusted it. Once more the day was not without expectancy. Impatiently he waited for the third day, to make his first call in Bedford-place, Miss Vanstone had two comfortably furnished rooms at the top of the house, and had rendered them quite dainty with books and pictures and nick-nacks. She received him with an unaffected welcome, set him down in a comfortable basket chair, offered. him cigarettes, pressed him to smoke. I do, a little," she said, laughing; then went to a side-table and got some slips of MS., which she was all eagerness to read. I don't know what you will think of my impressions. I have seen everything very vividly while I have been writing, and I Lhink them awfully good." The words may read conceited, but they had no sound of conceit as she Fpoke them. Lilian Yanstone wore her heart upon her sleeve, and was totally devoid of self-con- sciousness. You saw in her all the best qualities of the latter-day woman, of which truthfulness is the most conspicuous. I hope you will like it; of course, I don't expect you to be struck with it as I ami, but you won't please me if you don't speak your mind; you will find me very patient under a snub, and very ready to adopt suggestions. Don't suppose it is a case of Gil Bias and the archbishop; I really mean it." Denver promised that he would be a veritable Aristarchas. (To be continued).
" HAMMOCK HOURS."
HAMMOCK HOURS." Congressman Cannon, of Illinois, says r writer in the "Outlook," one hot summer's day sought rest in a hammock in the garden of his hotel. Flies innumerable swarmed round him "What do you mean," he demanded of the hotel proprietor, "by stretching your ham- mock" in that fly-haunted field of torture yon call a lawn?" "I know the flies are bad out there now," he answered, "but, Mr. Cannon, you ought to use the hammock during the hammock hours and you'd have no trouble from the flies." "What are hammock hours?" "From twelve noon to two p.m. daily," he replied. "During those hours flies will not attack you in the hammock." The Congressman was much interested in the man's Socratic skill in evading the issue, and, wishing to draw him out, asked, "Why are there no flies around the hammock between twelve and two?" '"Oh," he rejoined, "at that time they're all in the dining-room!"
" WE BURIED HIM."
WE BURIED HIM." "If you please, ma'am," said the house- maid, "I must go home. as father is ill." "You may go home," said the mistress, who wa.; in the early stages of wrestling with the theories of Christian science, "but you must tell your father he is not really ilJ-he orily believes he is ill; we axe what we believe we are, and, if he believes he is weil, he will be well; go home and tell him that." Mary, being duly impressed with the depth of the argument, departed and returned after a few days. "And what does yonr father believe now?" asked her mistress. "Ee believes he's dead," replied Mary, with conviction—we buried him yesterday T'
