"7 W0 MEN FROM KIMBERLEY,"
"7 W0 MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of Robert Miner, Anarchist," Stafford, a Romance," &e. I PART THE FOURTH. Lifting the Veil. CHAPTER II.-Continued. In Mr. Isaac Johnson's Office. That's right; have a good cry; it will reNeve you," said the lawyer, sympathetic- ally. He prided himself upon the manage- ment of female witnesses and clients. "Oh, sir," said Martha at last, "I feel that whatever I do I'm a wicked woman." And a very proper frame of mind for all Christians. We are always doing wicked tbinga, but we must consider what is the least wicked, and do that," said Mr. John- son piously. That's what I'm trying to do," said Martha, eagerly. It do seem a dreadful thing to go agin the people whose bread you've eat, and whose money you have took; oh dear, oh dear!" But there is a higher consideration—if these people are wrongdoers, if they are robbing someone of his rights, and you know anything that can help him to get them, you are committing a deadly sin, for which you will have to answer at the great reckoning day., if you conceal it," said Johnson, solemnly. That's just what, 1 feel, sif"-what has brought me here. I haven't known a minute's peace for months and months; I'm haunted, haunted—it drove my poor husband to take his own life," she said in a terrified whisper. Johnson was bursCIng with impatience to get at the woman's secret, but he manipu- lated her with the skill of an angler, who, though he has hooked his trout, knows that impatience or indiscretion may lose him his prize. You are very much overcome, Mrs. A- a Fennell, sir." Naturally, by the remembrance of your husband's sad end; allow me to offer you a glass of port; my special port, that I keep for ladies." I Mr. Johnson took from his cupboard a bottle of good old port," hot, etrong, and sweet, and poured his visitor out a glass. La, sir, you be kind, and I always thought lawyers such snappish, crusty people," said Mrs. Fennell, her eyes sparkling as she sipped the liquor. When lawyers are bad they are very bad, but when they are good, they are like good port wine, crusty outside, sweet within," said Mr. Johnson oracularly. The lawyer knew perfectly well the kind of person he had to deal with-an hysterical woman divided between an alarmed conscience and ties of obligations to persons to whom she had long served and who had been kind to her. No conditions could be more un- favourable to a full confession; reservations might be made to shield her late master and mistress, and facts coriCealed that might be of the utmost importance as evidence. But once put yourself on a confident footing with such a person, gain their sympathies, and they will turn their minds inside out to you. And what is the story of your poor husband's suicide?" he inquired. "La, sir, didn't you read it? Why, the newspapers was full of it, and the men as writes for 'em offered me golden sovereigns if I'd tell 'em things, but I didn't." Mrs. Fennell spbke with an air of great importance, for she was very proud of her name having appeared in the newspapers. And so, in a very roundabout manner, she told the story of what her husband had seen on the night of the murder: his finding the body of Lilian Griceson, and its secret burial. This last item was so startling that Johnson was roused out of his ordinary nonchalant attitude, and became much excited. It was a murder;" he exclaimed. But Mrs. Fennell stoutly denied the inference. No, sir, I feel sure as the poor dear soul died a nat'ral death; my poor Mike was sure of it, and he looked to see whether there was any wound or hurt on the body, and there was none; and I've overheard Miss Agatha and her husband talking about it, and they said 'twas 'eart." She then went on to tell of the supposed apparition of Lilian Griceson that had appeared to her husband, the explanation of which was still unknown to her, and the fatal effect it had upon him. This part of the story Mr. Johnson regarded with utter scepticism, as the drunken delusions of a conscience-striken man, but he did not say so, as he perceived that the narrator was firmly convinced of the reaJity of the appearances. Agatha's visit to River-lane and the sequel of it interested him deeply. But Martha knew nothing of the assaults upon Denver, or of the fire, for Agatha had carefully kept the newspapers from her. Of all the awful places I was ever in was that Hall; I'm sure it waa full of ghosties. I couldn't a stopped there any longer; I should a gone mad or drownded myself in the great black water that's in the front o' the house. Poor Miss Lilian, she haunted Mike till he couldn't live any longer, and she's come to me in my dreams. It's all because she isn't buried aa a Christian. Then there was the bar'net; oh, he's a hawful man; I got frightened to death of him, for he used to look as if he'd like to kill me. I had a pound a week for life and a 'ome. I've given it all up; oh, it's dreadful to think of. But they'd a killed me if I'd stopped. And only to think that Master Herbert is the rightful heir, and he's been kept out of his own, and he's gone off now to try and murder him—and he followed you to try and murder you-and 'twas that frightened me out of the house, for I felt as my turn 'ud come next." Yes, I knew the man I had to deal with," chuckled Johnson, and thought it safer to double him. But what do you mean by his going off to try and murder Herbert Marston?" Well, sir, I confess I was outside the door all the time you was talking with the bar'net," began Martha dubiously. "Quite natural; I should have done the same in your place." Thank you, sir, for saying that," she said, brightening up, and now eager to tell every- thing she had heard by eavesdropping. Her account of what had passed in the interview between Marston and Agatha, after his (Johnson's) departure, greatly alarmed the lawyer. Unfortunately, no mention had been made of the whereabouts of the proposed victim, though it was evident that Marston knew where to lay hands upon him. The crime might be already committed, the young man dead and the case, which he was build- ing up with so much care and skill, nullified. He closely cross-examined her in the hope that he might suggest eome clue. Her master received very, Iew letters, the said. One came on the morning of his departure; she did look at the post-mark, but she didn't, know the name of the place, and had quite forgotten what it was. This was most unfortunate, as his ignoranoe rendered it impossible to warn Herbert of his danger, or to take any attempt to counteract the assassin's plans. Miss Agatha's just as bitter as hint against Master Herbert, because he wouldn't marry her." "Oh, she was in love with him—that'* a new factor," exclaimed Johnson. "Oh, dear, and that reminds me; I heard her say she would go to Sandlands as soon « the bar'net was gone." Ah, that is very important, for he will no doubt go there to her. Now tell me aboab the lady's love for Mr. Herbert." This question led to further revelatims. Then, when he thought that he had drained her dry of facts, and was anxious to dismiss her, he inquired, "What are you going to do? If you havent got lodgings, look about some of the streclsfeff Gray's Inn-road, and leave your address here as soon as possible. Of course, you have moxiey for present use?" "Oh, yes, sir." "Very well, I'll see you are not a loeer by your Christian conduct. Always do right, and you are sure of your reward." When Mrs. Fennell descended the stairs she was thinking: "There's them letters o' Miss Lilian's, that poor Mike found upon her body; they do explain a lot of things. I was going to give 'em to him once or twice, but I ought to get something 'andsome for them." With all his astuteness tho woman had made a reservation after all, and one of the utmost importance. Johnson had taken down shorthand notes of Martha, Fennell's statements; there was quite sufficient evidence to warrant the arrest of both Marston and his wife. But hia supreme thought just then was the danger of Herbert; how could that be averted, if it was not already too late? He would go to Macnaughton's, send one of his assistants, if he had gone himself, to. Islington to relieve him, and bring him back to the office. Then they could conaulb together as to what was best to be done, (To be continued).
ILONG LIVES.
LONG LIVES. A charming little residential estate in the West Highlands, beautifully situated amid woodland scenery, upon the. side of at picturesque loch, came recently into" the, market. A Sassenach went down front London to have a look at it. He arrived upon a dismal, drenching day, a choice example of fancy" Highland weather. Everything looked its dreariest. Thep Sassenach, regretted his journey. No thine would tempt him to buy. It's easier some- times to get to a Highland place than, to get away from it. Having some time upon his hands, the would-be purchaser in the course of his perambulations strayed into the little local graveyard. This is what he read with. growing astonishment upon the tombstones Sacred to the memory of Duncan Maccoll, who departed, Ac., aged 89": ditto John. One night recently she gave a dinner. She was in high feather and wore a diamond tiara, and several strings of pearls round her neck., During the evening she complained of feeling' a little chilly, and told one of the servants to call her maid. When the maid appeared she, is said to have shivered a trifle, and exclaimed "Susette, I am so cold; please get me another string of pearls."
