I "TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY,"
I "TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of Robert Miner, Anarchist," Stafford, a Romance," &e. PART THE FOURTH. I Lifting the Veil. CHAPTER It-Continued, In Mr. Isaac Johnson's Office. Johnson's curiosity was roused. He asked many questions about this Dick Weston, and heard that he was supposed to come from the north of England—Cumberland or Westmore- land. Johnson had a remarkable power of photographing faces from his mind's eye, and such impressions never faded; Dick Weston was added to his mental portrait gallery. Two or three days afterwards his associate told him that Weston had suddenly departed for England-but whether he had come across the life or not was unknown to the man. It was upwards of a couple of months after- wards that Johnson received Denver's letter. It recalled to his memory at once his having acted as clerk in the somewhat curious busi- ness to which it referred. Two copies of Lady Marston's declaration had been made and signed at the time, one of which remained in Mr. Griceson's possession, while the other was taken charge of by Mr. Goodenough. This circumstance, though the duplicate was made by his own suggestion, to guard against accidents, seemed to have slipped Mr. Griceson's memory, for when, at Mr. Goodenough's death, all the other papers were transferred to the new solicitor, no inquiries were made for that document, which had been kept in a box separate from the rest. It was not until some time after the transference that Johnson found the paper, and he made up his mind to keep it-until, at least, it was asked for. It was never asked for. Though he replied so brusquely to Denver's letter, he at once wrote off to a private detec- tive whom he knew, and furnished him with the leading facts of the case, to verify his correspondent's statements. The detective did his work well, though he had not been able to trace Denver after his departure from Sussex, and when Johnson at last returned to England he found the materials for a very fine case ready to his hand. The murder of Mr. Griceson had significance for him, in connection with the stolen docu- ment, that was lost to the police. Among the facts he had before him were two that he took particular note of; the new baronet had been abroad for several years, leading a roving life in the Colonies, and the Marston estate was situated in Cumberland. Now these two circumstances suggested Dick Weston; they certainly coincided with the rumours he had heard about his past. It was a far-fetched idea certainly, but Mr. Johnson was a man of imagination: hence his success in the difficult investigations that he undertook. The first use he would make of Lady Marston's testament would be to pay a visit to Sir Aaron Marston and state the case; If Sir Aaron were an honest man he would help him to find the rightful heir. If he were Dick Weston, Johnson would have him under his thumb. How he put this plan into texecution we have already seen. In spite of the shaven face, the alteration of dress and manner, and the different surroundings, Johnson had little doubt from the moment his eyes first rested upon Aaron Marston that he and Dick Weston were one and the same person. He tested the truth of his suspicions, and proved them to be correct. Whether or not Mr. Johnson was open to a handsome offer for the precious documents, I cannot decide; probably he did not know himself; but after the insolent reception he received, he returned to London vindictively resolved never to rest upon his oars until he had ousted the so-called Sir Aaron Marston from his ill-gotten honours, and brought home to him fraud-and perhaps something worse. While he was cogitating over the papers on that particular day, a small, but not very young, ferret-faced boy, who sat in a cupboard outside to announce visitors, came in to say that a gentleman as wouldn't give his name wanted to see him. Show him in," was Johnson's order, as he put the papers inside the desk. An elderly, intensely respectable-looking man, attired in black broad cloth, entered the office. I have come," he said, after taking a seat at the lawyer's invitation, in respect to an advertisement which I read a few days ago in the Daily Telegraph.' Yes; that if Mr. Dixon, formerly butler at Sandlands. Sussex, would call at No. —, Gray's Inn, he would hear of something to his advantage. You are Mr. Dixon; I guessed as much the moment you came in," said Johnson, quickly. Really, sir!" answered Dixon in a surprised tone; "at first I ? made up my mind not to take any notice." "But you could not rest till you did; of course, that is always the way." May I ask what began Dixon nervously, and wishing he had not come, for there was something in the look of those restless, black eyes that made him feel un- comfortable. Mr. Johnson drew the papers that he had been perusing out of the desk, turned to the last page, and pointing to the name of William Dixon, as witness, said: That's your signature?" The butler turned white; his jaw dropped. I remember you quite well now, Mr. Dixon. It was I who drew up the document. Here is my name coupled with yours as a witness. An extraordinary document, wasn't it? One of those stupid things that women are so fond of doing; and the result is what might have been anticipated: the wrong man has got the estate, and you and I will have to expose the fraud and right the wrong." Mr. Johnson was rubbing his hands and wondering why Mr. Dixon should look so extremely disconcerted. Then the-the paper that was supposed to have been lost-is found," faltered the butler. You, like the rest, seem to have forgotten that there were two copies." "So there was," ejaculated Dixon; "I had forgot it." "Now, Mr. Dixon, you and myself are the only two people living who witnessed this document; consequently, our testimony is invaluable." "You know where the young man, Herbert Marston, is to be found?" inquired the butler, uneasily. Oh, yes, certainly; when his presence is required he will be there. Now will you favour me with your address?" Mr. Dixon gave a number in River-terrace, Islington, where he said he was lodging. "I have taken no regular situation since I left Sandlands," he added, "but I occasionally assist at dinner parties, more for amusement than anything else." "Just so. What is your idea about the mur- der of Mr. GriceeoA? Who do you think did M" The question was fired off with the abrupt- ness of a pistol shot, while Mr. Johnson was, as usual, apparently looking in another direc- tion. Dixon was evidently very startled. "Really, I—it was as great a. mystery to me as to everybody else," he stammered. At first." he added after a pause, and with some reluct- ance, I, like everybody else, suspected this young man, Herbert-" "Do you suspect him now?" You must excuse me giving any opinion, as I have no evidence to go upon," answered the butler with something of desperation in his tone. Quite right, Mr. Dixon; you cannot be too cautious; I have no motive in putting the question, which has nothing to do with our present business." Mr. Johnson uttered these words with the most nonchalant frankness, as though the subject were dismissed for evermore from his thoughts. Then," he said, rising, you will hold yourself in readiness when called upon to state all you know respecting this document." I only know I signed it as a witness, but I did not know, nor do I know, anything of ita contents." "You cannot state what you don't know; that we don't expect," said Mr. Johnson with a genial smile; but we must have what you do know." As the door closed behind Mr. Dickson, whose relief at getting out of the den would have been obvious to a far less keen observer than Isaac Johnson, the lawyer called sharply, Nipper." The ferret-faced boy stood at attention. Follow that man till you land him in River- terrace, Islington. Wait there till you are relieved by MI. Macnaughton. Off you go; half-a-crown for the job." Nipper vanished. Johnson applied himself to his telephone. Mr. Macnaughton was in his office, and re- ceived instructions to start for River-terrace at once, where he would find Nipper. Keep the man he will tell you of under surveillance; don't let him be lost night of. It is Dixon, and he is very slippery. It is most impor- tant." "If that man doesn't know the murderer I'll eat my head, and if he's not mixed up in it himself I'm prepared to make the same cannibal banquet. He didn't do it; no, there's nothing vicious about him. Let me see, the question was, who opened the hall-door by which the murderer entered. Xo person so likely as he; not with any idea of what would happen, I should say. Then why should he I admit a desperado like this Weston or Marston? That is a point I cannot fathom. Where is the motive? You'll have to tura I King's evidence, my lord of the cellar." A timid knock, which had been repeated more than once, interrupted Mr. Johnson's soluoquy. in," he shouted. l80lilOQUY. in, he shouted. The door opened, a.nd a woman stood upon the threshold. Johnson recognised her in a moment as the servant who had opened the door to him at Marston Hall. There was a. frightened look upon Martha Fennell's white faoe, and she was trembling with nervousness. Come in, come in," said Johnson, rising. "I know you; you are from Marston Hall. Sit down; the stairs have breathed you,, don't hurry; take your time." He perceived the state of trepidation his visitor was in, and his first object was to give her confidence. Martha tried to speak, but instead burst into hysterical tears. (To be continued).
NOT THAT SORT.
NOT THAT SORT. A good story is told of one of the Cage Town volunteers. He had been at the front for a month or two and was pretty well tired of the endless travelling, lack of rations, etc. So that he considered he was lucky when one day he came across the general, who was doing a tour of inspection. He shouted: "Hullo, mister! You, I want to speak to you. The general, turning, found, he was the "mister" so politely hailed. "Well, my man," he said, "what do you want with me?" "I want to get a furlough, mister, that's what I want," was the reply. "Why do you want a furlough, my maaf inquired the general. "Well, I want to go home and see my wife." "How long is it since you saw her?" "Ever since I enlisted, nearly three months ago. "Three months!" exclaimed the commander. "Why, my good fellow, I have not seen my wife for three years!" The bold hero looked incredulous, and then drawled out: "Oh, but you see, me and the wife ain't that sort!"

A story concerning a famous actress is going the rounds of the American press. It seems that while in New York Mr. "Dooley," Dunne arranged a supper in her honour, and invited to it some people who are described as being "distinctly worth while." Mark Twain was one of them, John Kendrick Bangs was another, and George Ade a third. The actress, so the tale runs, was in the greatest, form, and surveyed America, its growth, and characteristics and laws and customs and • manners and so on in the most satisfying detail. At last she turned to Mark Twain. "Don't you agree with me, Mr. Clemens, that the Americans are a wonderful people?" "They are," said the humourist, with his most dangerous drawl, "a wonderfully patient people!" New Lodger (sarcastically): Is this all the soap there is in the room? Landlady (decidedly): Yes, sir; aJI I allow for one room. New Lodger: Well, I'll take two more rooms. I shall want to wash my face in the morning.
