I"THE QUEEN REGENT,"
I "THE QUEEN REGENT," By BEATRICE HERON-MAXWELL, Author of The Adventures of a Lady Pearl Broker," What May Happen," &0. CHAPTER I. Outside the Dominion. A lady wishes to find a RESIDENT TUTOR for her only son, aged eight years. Must be University man with ample qualifications and highest social refer- ences. Liberal emolument.—Apply, in first instance, stating full particulars, to Messrs. Haste and Wardell, Bedford-row. Here," said Beecher, is an opportunity for you, Merivale," He handed the Morning Post" across the breakfast table to me and strolled to the window. There's the cab," he said, it may as well take us to Bedford-row as anywhere else—if you really mean it, Merivale?" I really mean it," I answered. It is not a question of choice, but of necessity." "Very well. When shall we start?" Won't it bore you to come with me? Not at all. I can speak for you much better than you can for yourself, and supply the social reference at first hand." He rang the bell, and Croxton, whom I called The Admirable," appeared, with a fur-lined coat over Iris arm, and various adjuncts to his lordship's well-being in the other hand. "If Sir William West calls, tell him Mr. Merivale is staying with me, and say we are lunching at the Junior Carlton; he'll find us there about two." Yes, m'lord." Don't give me any more of these cigar- ettes, Croxton; here, empty the case and put in some Paraschos instead." Yes. m'lord." This coat is getting infernally tight below the chest. I must do a bit of Sandow. More muscle and less superfluity of adipose tissue— eh, Croxton?" Yes, m'lord." Beecher burst out laughing; Croxton's face remained, as usual, devoid of expression. Come along. Merivale; conversation with Croxton is rather of the penny-in-the-olot order, isn't it? Eh, Croxton? Yes, m'lord." And the Admirable turned to assist me with my overcoat, infusing just so much deferential interest in the operation as was my due, each grade of friendship with Beecher being registered in the most methodical way by the degree of recognition from his valet. "You have fully made up your mind?" said Beecher, as we drove down Piccadilly in the smartest hansom to be seen in or near town. "You won't reconsider my suggestions?" What, to inflict myself on you for six months while I look round? Old man, I have too much regard for. your friendship. I want it to last me more than half a year." I'll guarantee we pull all right together." I looked at his face with its open unlined brow, its clear eyee, its full, firm, humorous mouth and cleft chin, and felt that here was a friend with whom to defy satiety—a friend to thank God for. But I shook my head all the same. I have a hundred a year and indepen- dence," I said, a clean bill of health, and brain and limbs in working order. I should feel a fraud if I took advantage of your offer, B«erher. But-I'm glad to havw bPA it; it puts heart into a man to find his friends believe in him. And if you will keep the invitation open," I added, laughing, and I make a failure of things. I'll come back in my old age, and ask for my six months." Beecher did not answer, but sat staring out at Shaftesbury-avenne, and I knew by the look on his face that his thoughts were wandering backwards to a sleepy pool in Cherwell Stream, where the willows touch the river, and where once. years ago, a lad fought for his life with the treacherous rushes under the water. An unequal fight- all but ended-when his friend dived after him and pulled him out. Those Oxford days were a long time back in both our memories, but Beecher was a man who never forgot a kindness or a service. Here we are," he said as the cab drew up; now for Messrs. Haste and Wardell." He had cut out the advertisement and brought it with him, and we gave it to the clerk in the outer office, with my card. There were about a dozen men of varying ages waiting about; the advertisement had evidently drawn. Wait," said Beecher, as the man turned to go, take my card in with it." I smiled at the manoeuvre, and as the clerk äisappeared Beecher said in a low tone, I have moments of snobbery; but you know the reason. There were days when I hadn't a name to conjure fools with, and my time was any one's who chose to waste it. I have learnt my lesson." His experience was right. Although late- comers, we were shown in at once, and the head of the firm received us benignantly. Mr. Archibald Merivale," said the Head, reading our cards, and Lord Beecher." He glanced at me with a gracious, tentative smile, and Beecher, interposing, said: "Very natural mistake. This, however, is Mr. Meri- vale. We called in reply to your advertise- ment for a tutor. My friend is thinking of taking up some post of that sort if a suitable one can be found." The Head looked a little graver;' this spirit of condescension was reversing the natural order of things. "What are Mr. Merivale's qualifications?" he said, looking down, with an air of non- committal. I mentioned the honours I had taken at Merton, and the fact that my father had belonged to the banking firm of Dovedale and Rose, and was realising the scarcity of detail which I had to offer when Beecher interposed. I have known Merivale for some years now-we were at Eton and Oxford together, and am really more capable of speaking for him than he is for himself. He not only took honours at the 'Varsity, but he was the best swimmer of his time, and rowed stroke in his boat his last year. He was heir to his cousin Merivale 1, "Viscount Merivale?" asked the Head. "The title is lately extinct, I think?" YeEI; the property was not entailed, and his cousin left it all to a protege. Merivale here didn't want the shadow without the substance. He let the name go. He has been paying his father's liabilities for some years- you remember, of course, the Dovedale smash, and the honourable conduct of all the directors —and now finds himself, in consequence, with a straitened income." "He is unmarried?" Beecher laughed. "Absolutely. Age 28; character irreproachable; social position un. impeachable. The boy is a little young for him to tackle. That's the only thing." Mr. Haste put his two hands together in an attitude resembling prayer. The boy is young, I admit," he said, judicially, but there are considerations. He is heir to a large fortune, and may take a very prominent place in the world some day. His education and bringing up are to be on a princely scale. I think Mr. Merivale would probably stand a good chance of obtaining the position if he would like to apply for it. I signified my desire to do so. I will write a letter of introduction to my client," he continued, which you can either present personally, Mr. Merivale, or forward by post previously to making an appoint- ment." He wrote some few lines, then paused, look- ing inquiringly at me. What address shall I give to Mre. Van- renen?" "22a, St. James's-street," I said. "I am staying for the present with Lord Beecher." "And your references?" with polite firm- neIlS, Lord Beecher, Lady Julia Briaxley, and. if you like a third, her husband, the Dean." Mr. Haste bowed with a suggestion of say- ing, Eminently satisfactory," and finished the letter, handing it to me with a suave smile. "Is Mrs. Vanrenen likely to be at home if I call there this morning?" I asked. Mr. Haste was not sure. "Are you on the telephone?" demanded Beecher. If so, just ring up the Carlton and ask. Tell her we can call at any time that suits her to-day." Mr. Haste touched a bell, and on the appear. ance of the clerk, said majestically: "Take these gentlemen to the telephone, Saunders." and bowed us out. The interview was ter- minated. In the intervals of the telephoning I drew mental picture of Mrs. Vanrenen, whose name suggested to me a large, middle-aged, hand- come American, with "dollars" writ plainly on every seam of her Paris-cut clothing, and vibrating in every accent of her interrogative voice. I even began to feel a, faint dislike to her. and to think that it would take very little to make me decline the honour of teaching a young millionaire how to behave himaelf and do credit to the pile which his father had probably amassed by the literal sweat of his brow. There was ifo mention of a Mr. Van- renen," I said to Beecher, as we drove towards Pall Mall. Is he non-existent, do you suppose?" Probably suppressed—for a time, at all events. D.C., perhaps—or separation by: mutual agreement; madame to bose the show until the heir is fairly launched." However, it is madame with whom W8 have-to deal. Heaven send us obliquity." "Amen," said Beecher, as we pulled up at the Carlton. Madajne was at home. as we already knew. and would see us in her private sitting-room on the first floor. Behold us awaiting her arrival there, and taking stock of the various evidences of indi- viduality which the room bore. It was not the conventional reception room of a hotel sojourner, though in what lay the difference I could not at first determine. Photographs, candy" boxes, bibelots- these were conspicuous by their absence; the room might have been habitually used by a man of much business, insomuch as the lack of feminine paraphernalia betokened a mascu-> line disregard of trifles. A large writing table, square with the window, held a mass of letters and papers, all filed and classified, however, and, in addition, abundant means for easyl correspondence. Writing pad, stationery cases, telegram holders, scaling apparatus— everything that could possibly be wanted for penmanship on a large scale were here at hand. all in dark green morocco with a gold coronet raised above the initials Z. V." But close to this Deux ex machina, a smaller table held two ornaments that bespoke a softer phase of character. A life-size vignette photograph of a. boy resting on an easel, and underneath it an enormous bowl of Russian and Neapolitan violets, the dark and light massed together in a sort of wilful luxuriance. I studied the boy's face, believing, natur- ally. that this was my pulpil in pose. Beneath it. in a firm hand, was written the word Royal," and I concluded that this was his name. It certainly fitted its small owner with a nicety of discrimination; the face, scarcely past babyhood of outline, was yet so instinct; with dignity, serene though childish. Beauti- ful dark eyes, calm with a confidence of power beyond that of ordinary petted babyhood. looked gravely out from under level brows, the short upper lip held a certain pride and reticence in its curve, nose and chin of patrician mould lifted the face to a still greater distinction. It might well have been the portrait of a baby sovereign whose future kingship controlled his present right of youthful freedom. I was still studying it when a murmured exclamation from Beecher made me look round, and I realised Mrs. Vanrenen's presence. She had entered by some folding doort, and she stood now within them, her face turned full towards me. One hand held the curtain, beneath which she had just passed, aside; the other drooped with caressing com- mand on the head of a white Borzoi which accompanied her, and whose intent regard was also bent on me. Neither of them seemed to note Beecher. and for the moment I had completely, forgotten him. The picture that had presented itself with such startling abruptness was so unexpected and so unusual that I was dumb for a full moment, while for some reason that I did not divine she waited for me to speak. I had seen lovely women-in paintings and out of them. I had cherished, in common with most men, a vague idea made up of hair and eyes and colouring that suited my taste- lips that appealed to it; but I had neither seen nor imagined a woman like this, and in the surprise of it I could not have said whether my feeling was one of admiration or of a satisfied indifference, nor, indeed, could I have described her with any words that would have conveyed her likeness to myself or others. The one commonplace fact that she was in widow's dress impressed itself, however, on me, and a transient thought flashed through my mind of the disregard of conventionality, that would be involved in my residence under her roof. Then I found my voice and said. bowing low Mrs. Vanrenen, I presume?" Yes. You called to see me on business? A smooth low voice with both composure and authority in it. No high inflection, no twang or blur-the voice of a cultured woman. I have brought a letter of introduction from Mr. Haste, which will explain the reason of my visit." She took the note, saying, "And your friend?" Oh, yes-I beg your pardon. This is myj s friend, Lord Beecher." I had not looked at him until now, when I caught the reflection of my own mixed feelings, in his glance. She went and sat down on a divan, the dog lying at her feet and keeping an attentive eye on us; but she made no sign of invitation to us to be seated. When she had read the letter she looked at me steadfastly for a moment. I am very anxious," she said, to find a. tutor for my son who will oontinue with him for many years. I should like to feel that: when I had once explained the end I have in; view, his tutor would unite with me in keeping that end before us in everything, while the: boy is growing up, and in training every; capacity and impulse of Roy's nature to that one result."
