I [By Special Arrangemsnt.—Copyright.] THE DIARY OF '96, I By MADGE ROBERTSON. j On last New Year's morning Euzh Hcilems I received a diary among his gifts. It was ths usual custom of Hugh s people to thus present him. It was also usual on Hugh's part to drop it in his top drawer under liie collar- box and allow it to remain brr-ICU there, subject to spasmodic, attempts at resurrection until on in midsummer. Then it invariably went on the top shelf in the billiard-room. where his old echo >1 books were kept. to accumulate dust, together with the unused diaries of past years. I But in this year of our b">rd eighteen [ hundred and ninety-six a change in Hugh's treatment of his Xew Yetx's querf took place, j The change was merely reflected, having its primary light in a change which was taking place in the young gentleman himself. He had taken to solitary smoking, to letting the gas stay unlighted in his room, to gazing in the fire for an hour or so before retiring. This would have been considered a very bad sign by his sister had she known anything about it. There was a rumour that he had decline^ io lead a cotillon, but no one was assured enough to assert so definitely. Euto much was certain that Hugh Heiiems, young geniieman of leisure, was out a great deal and :1t snaie place where neither h people nor his friends ever met him, and. further, that he was keeping a diary. ¡ The publication of me Llî¡er fact W:1 due to hi, enterprising E'stcr, Thn; ;Jwà young person had one day a heart intent on !a naw white silk handkerchief with H on it, for the use of someone who was not Hugh. -And having a frugal mind she early re.-nlved to expend the monty usually devoted to the said someone on herself, and abstract the birthday gift handkerchief from her unwary brother. In the course of her subsequent and unlawful expedition through his belongings she unearthed the diary and idly opened it. She is her own authority for the fact that the search was promptly discontinued. and that she most dishonourably proceeded to acquaint herself with ail the written matter contained therein. There 'W no exC'ue for it," -lie observed ?itfteri7v,kr,ls. meditatively, bu? I am awfully glad I did." The first day, New Year's Day. plunged the reader into the middle of th?ng:? and le: her gasping. "Jan 1st. Shall write myself down an ass to put up with the things that girl does to me. "Went to call on her and wish her n happy Xew Year. Get snubbed for my pain-. Was edified to learn by personal observation that N-ew Year's calling is not so Ion:, out of date that the young woman of the present day can enjoy it as an antique. Wanted her to come and hear Lohengrin with eelf and sister. Thought I could manage sister An interruption is said to have occurred I here while the much-incensed "sister" asked herself blankly who the girl could be, and argued in reply, with quick feminine pereep- jtiob ot" sttorat rattles, I Lth. -uaw not be relied on. to furnish her own chaperon, the unknown damsel was probably a stranger boarding in one roem, cooking her break- I fast over a gas jet. I'gh! The diary -was roumed:- AVas refused quite calmly. It seems she was writing an article on advice to girls on bov, to treat young men. I happened along nicely in time to give point to the moral. You must know the young men with whom you go to the theatre very well indeed.' She reminded n,e of the recent date of our i acquaintance. Endeavoured to show her how I deserved double pity on that account. Left. her writing. "January 15th.—Called again to-night. Sat in her library for an hour while she wrote a letter to the man she says she is engaged to. Remarked at regular intervals that she had to stop it. or I should le-ave the room. Lisiened between times to her calm observa- tion that she was keeping me so that when she got through I could post the letter, and he would not be anxious concerning her state of health. Stamped about the room, and vowed everything, but-waited. Consented at last to post the letter if she would forget the other man for the space of two c.onsecutive minutes-it takes that long to do it properly. Had to go without the condition. Heard her laugh as I let the portiere flap. Outside it was snowing, everything feline and canine. She offered me an umbrella through the window. Dashed down the steps in a rage. madder every step down the avenue. Before I got to the sub-elation was soakc-d through with wet snow and rage. Finally, had a spasm, and tore the letter to bit. Then picked the bits up—couldn't leave her writing on New York strect&-cacried them home and burnt them." His eister sighed wearily. To think of my having a brother who could be so—maudlin." January 21st. Stayed a.way from her all week. Bored myself to death at the club." January 26th. Couldn't stand the rresbure any longer. Went round this morning to con- fess. Told her, and then tried to move her with a harrowing account of my feelirxgs. She laughed, and-you cannot keep angry with a girl with a laugh like the silveriest chime of Grac,L--hurch-I laughed too. That nearly ruined me. After I had reduced my face to gloom again, worked on her feelings some more. "Was finally successful after an hour's IJazing hot work. Then she told me the whole affair was a plant to get me excited and incidentally furnish her vith more aMuisement-11 "Amusement, indeed," commented his sister, That's a very artful young wonfaa. What fools men are," And possibly an article. She thought it ought to be worth at least ten dollars to her." "I always said," observed Hugh's sister, reminiscently. "that a literary girl was more dangerous than a chorus girl, because she is apt to have more brains, and there is quite ae attractive a flavour of Bohemianism about berometimes," with a saving remembrance of New York's society authoresses. But let, me finish this effusion." The blooming let ter was to a cousin about some commission or other. There was no engagement and she had no lover. Was such an all-round idiot that I offered to supply the vacancy. Got the usual unpremeditated- offer of friendship—con—bless her!" The reader executed a thankful pas eeul. then indulged in gnawing curiosity as to who the girl could be. "I expect I shall have,, to give up the gas-jet theory. -No boarding- house girl would refuse Hugh. Possibly, though, she does not know how rich he is, and may no one ever tell her." February If;t. Was passing her lioiise- that's a lie, went round that way on pur- pose: what's the use of a man lyhIg- in his diary which not a eoul but hirnseif ever lay* eyes H'm, I feel rather small," commented the man's sister. 11 --and dropped in. Ecumd her in tears. "Well, I don't like to be unoharitaixle." groaned his sister. but some one. has evi- dently told her." "Only brother, la«t ■ relative ahe -had. in the world, just died away off on the Faeiflc coast. That settled it. Took her in my arris and refused to let her go. Afier a bit she stopped sobbing, and I kissed her again- well. confound it all I kepi on kissing her. and in a little she grew quiet in my arm. Did not say much to her. but she under- stands. To-morrow I shall get at something definite." "February SLL,Yc,and her to-day very pensive, dressed in a simple b,ac-h- ;"own. Dear girl. She blushed when I came in. Even I had no idea how pretty she could look when she blushed. That finished m". and. some- how, I got her into my amis again. Alter that it wa« almost plain sailing. She con- fessed that she had not cared for me before, but now—what a kiss means to a giri: To a girl who has not had other lovers! And Lo me? Well. I have kissed other girls—yes. THE WORD AND THE BLOW.
THE WORD AND THE BLOW. There is an excellent example in Chinese history cf trouble arising irom the Let that two potentates had not "finished their sen- tences. The story goes that one sent a mes- sage to the other, saying, Send me a black dog with yellow spots, or else The insulted recipient of this message would hear no more of il. but took advantage of tha messenger's slight pause to chop off bis head, Then he despatched a messenger of his own, who, in delivering his racs/sage. go; as f;«r as "1 h,¡y(' nr, ¡-;U('J1 ÙOg'; and if 1 hac;. \\hUt>. at lie irade ;w eternal pause, as men do wiiea. their beads R rj sp- t, their bodies. Then the two potentates, reeling that, i; y. one had cause, they had. went to war against each other, and laid their respective terri- tories waste. I;Inally. when enough blood had been Epilt on each side to .lustily the laying of the foundations of a peace, a diplomatic explanation was. of course, required by both powers. For this purpose they approached each other in person, and one ruler dcmaiid^ d of the. other: Now, what did you mean by. Send me a black dog with yellow spots, or Why," was the surprised answer. I meant a black dog with yeilow spots, or ekse some other colour. But," retorted he In his turn, what did you mean by.. I liave no such dog: and if I had Oh!" ex- claimed the other, I simpiy meant what I said, and what my messenger was about to repeat to you when you removed his worth- 1-sss head. namely, ilia,t I had no such dog. and that if I had I should be only too pleased to send it to you!" A.F these explanations were considered quite satisfactory, peace was immediately proclaimed, and. friendly rela- tions were established between the survivor*.
