[By Special Arrangement- Copyright.] FLAT NO. 14. -0 By MARGARET JOHNSON BROWN. They were tired and worn with the journey, and almost everything: which presented ita--If would have been met with critical eyes. so as they wandered from room to room they made many comments not altogether Battering. "You say this was rented ready furnished before?" Mrs. Thompson asked the lean sallow- facsd girl, whose furtive glances took in the details of dress and manner of each of the party of five, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, their daughter ancl son-in-law (Mr. and Mrs. Frederick), and little girl Clarisse. "Yes ia, it's been rented several times before. and it struck Mrs. Frederick that that remark held some hidden meaning delivered as it was with a, most singular in- flection of voice. "Y'*hy. chat's the matter with it?" asked Mrs. 'ihompson sharply. "Nothing at all, mam, only people don't seem to stay long. I hi-ve been here with two different sets of people now. and Mrs. Adams has engaged me for you, that is if I j give satisfaction." "Come on here. Madge, here is something you will like," called Mr. Frederick from another room. j "Oh! how horribly ghastly," exclaimed Mrs. Frederick. "You superstitious little goose," laughed her husband," I knew you would say tha.t." "Why, mother, it looks like a coffin," cried Ciarisse, and so it did. The room they were in was a dark, narrow one, with a small, dingy window overlooking a courtyard; a stationary waste stand was crowded into one corner. rnd along the entire length of the wall on1 one side stretched the bath tub, shaped exactly like a c-ofiin, only many inches deeper, and to make the hideous likenes3 more complete a cover fitted tight over the top. "Oh! deareert;, I shall be afraid to bathe in I that thing," said Mrs. Frederick, "for I am sure the lid would fall down and I would I. drown. "Nonsense! here is a catch to hold it up, answered Mr. Frederick. "Do you know, I think some persons have extraordinarily sensitive organisations. I have always believed that people leavt the impress of their characters in their houses, and that any one with a very sensitive nature can get that impression by going into, and living in, that house," said Mrs. Frederick as they sat around after dinner, the two men smoking and sipping their coffee. "I think that statement slightly mixed, Madge," answered Mr. Thompson, "explain it more fully, go into details." "Well! Father here's what I mean. I sup- pose I will have to draw a diagram before you understand. If. say for instance, some on a had lived here, right here in this flat and had been miserable, that iragic events had taken place here, not necessarily death, I belie-ve that I could and would feel after living here awhile the effect of tjiofce events. I don't mean that I could tell you what had happened, but that an unrest, a nervous ex- citement, a feeling of dual existence-mine and ttit of those poor souls whose unhappi- ness ffad been sheltered here-would rest upon me. "Absurd"' grunted Mr. Frederick. "Eidiculousexclaimed Mrs. Thompson. Mr. Tlionrpson looked at his daughter kindly and said, "You are morbid, Madge; your bad health has made you so. and you should not give up to it, you must know that such a theory does not stand to reason, that there is no real sense in it." "Oh! fiddlesticks! don't pay any attention to Madge, she always did believe in ghosts," yawned Mr. Frederick. "You are all a set of etupids. and have no fine perceptions," laughed Madge, as she kissed her father and mother goad-night." After the lights were out, and the regular breathing at her side told her that her lord and master had gone to the land of dreams, Madge laid awake and thought of what she had said. As the minutes shipped away she dozed off, or, at least, she tried to persuade herself afterwards that she did. The room was dark save for a bead of light. Suddenly a feeling of terror fcrept over her. Something was in the room; something moved. Where she could not tell, but it was near, quite near. She tried to reason with herself, to raise herself up in bed and lool, around, to call to her husband, but a para- lysing sense of unutterable fear possessed her. She could not move, but all that time that something moved and breathed and crept quite near. TTovvHoiig she endured t'iutt*anguish she did not know, but after awhile little Clarisee uttered a shrill scream. "Mother! Mother! where are yon?" The spell was broken. "Lewis, Lewis, go to Clarisse and turn up the light." "The child is all right, just had a bad dream and so have you," said Mr. Frederick, when Clarisse had been patwsd back to sleep and Madge had been reasoned with, and iaughed at. "Nevertheless, Lewis, I am not quite feeble- minded, and I did hea/r something in the room. "You were either asleep, or else it was a mouse," answered her husband, and t'tcr awhile the feeling of terror passed away pad Madge slept. The next few days were spent in sighi-see- ii!?, and except for a, sort of uncanny feeling which assailed Madge at times, and vhich I she tried to convince herself was the outcome of ill-health, nothing of any consequence occurred. AfLer they had been occupying ths flat for a fortnight, Madge and her husband went to the theatre. Mrs. Thompson not being at all well stayed at home with Clar:s-.e. Wilen they returned they found the lights turned high in every room, and Mrs. Thomp- son looking pale and worried. "Why! What jg the matter, mother?" ex- claimed Madge. "I am so terribly upset," answered Mrs. Thompson. "After yon three had left Edna asked if elie could not go out and see a friend, and 1. of course, allowed her to go. She had hardly shut the door before Ciarisse beca,me extremely nervous and begged me to call her back, which I refused to do. The child grew frightfully pale and clung to me declaring 'that there was something in the house.' I tried to re-assure her. I turned up all the lights and took her from room to room examining them throughout, but to no avail. "When we came to the bath-room she shrieked and hid her face, positively declaring that she would not go into that room for 'it was there.' I have really had a time of it, and I am all un-nerved; I think you are partly responsible for it. Madge. In the first place Clarisse must inherit your high-strung ner- vous disposition, and then you so often say things which encourage that tendency in her. I heard you say the other day that you would not take a bath, in that tub it night for worlds. The child has heard all that and this is the consequence. It is very distress- ing," and Mrs. Thompeon regarded her daughter rather severely. "It is, indeed. I am so sorry. Poor little heart! How she will suffer!" exclaimed Madge. "I must try to overcome my foolish- ness for her sake. Is she asleep now?" she asked. "Oh! yes. I rocked her to sleep in my arms, but she hid her face on my shoulder and would not look jip." The next day at luncheon, during a pause in the conversation, Madge looked up and said quite impressively, "I have a wretched cold after the theatre, to-night I shall take an awfully hot bath and try to get rid oi it." "You won't take it in the bath-room will I you, mother?" asked Clarisse uneasily. i "Of course I will, my child, where else would I take it?" "Oh! mother, mother don't, please don't, you know you are afraid of that room at night. You said you were." "My dear little girl, don't be so absurd. Mother is not so foolish as to be afraid of any room." "You said you were any way," persisted the child, "and you'll be sorry if you do." No amount of re-assuring or explaining could convince her or calm her fears, and all day she pleaded with her mother not to do it. and always added "that she would be sorry if she did." Throughout the play a feeling of nervous- ness possessed Madge. She was distrait and uninteresting. When they returned her hus- band laughingly said, "Well! little girl, are you going to take that bath?" "Of course I am. Lewis," she answered, and added, "but I shail not lock the door, and if I don't come out soon you must come in and see if anything has happened to me." "Really, Madge, you carry that sort of I thing too faf," said Mrs. Thompson who had I. overheard the remark. "Well, I will go in and look around and take mine first." said Mr. Frederick, "and if j anything, is there it wHl get me. There sorely caould not be a ghocrt with such exe- era-ble taste as to overlook me and get you in preference. Hadge." ( Madge undressed slowly, and anaid much laughter and chaff went into the bath-room. "Nevertheless I shall not lock the door," she called out. The room looked wan and gruesome ty the flickering candle light, the gas fixture having been removed this dismal mea-us of lighting had to be resorted to. "That horrid lid." thought Madge as she stepped into the tub. For a few minnWs after she had stretched out and the warmth of the water bud commenced to soothe and rest her, she forgot her morbid fears. Presently she looked up. « "Great God' what was that?" The little blindless window was flooded with a soft greenish light, and there, plain and dis- tinct, stood a man-no, not a man—a fiend'. Madge could distinguish every feature. A strange calmness came to her. She found herself gazing with a fearful persistency at that face. The hideous- ness of it fascinated her. Those blood- shot eyes held her, that lank. black hair, tha,t loose-lipped mouth, distorted beyond human conception, those wolfish teetlh, all commanded her gaze. She even found her- self wishing she might raise herself up and get a better view of the figare which seemed draped in foreign-looking garments as was also the head. Even as the thought came to her the figure receded—resolved itself into the atmosphere, and Madge recovering from that deadly calm. ness which had made her incapable of mov- ing, was about to shriek aloud when there it was again, but merciful Heaven! not at the window, bu.t there at her side. Oh! why did they not come. Someone must help her. That thing meant her some harm; with a laugh more hideous than the noises of Hell it seemed to divine her thought, for he lifted up the sleeve of his coat and with a claw-like bloody hand grasped the lid and slowly, d Madge, sanl,- slowly it descended, and Madge sank deeper and deeper into some ulack sickening depth with the echo of that fiendish laughter ringing in her ears. "Mrs. Thompson. Mrs. Thompson, come and help me quick. Madge has fslnted in the bath-tub," cried Mr. Frederick. i "Yes! it's what I should call a case of hya. teria. Nevertheless, in view of what you have told me. and cf Mrs. Frederick's own story I » would change Quarters at once. You say the lid of that tub was really down when you went into the room?" asked the doctor. "It was. T the sound of that thing falling which mad: me go in," answer-id Mr. Frederick. ".Most extraordinary! and you re cert-ata you fastened it before you left the bath- room?" "Perfectly." "Well! truth is oft: n stranger than fiction," remarked the doctor, "and this is certainly a queer story; it is very interesting to me. I shall try to find out if anyone can throw any light on it. or if anything strange has ever occurred here. My advice to you. though, is to take that wife and child of yours out iLto the country at once." "I shall certainly do so," answered M*. Frederick- The doctor set about at once to see if any fact could be foand which would possibly throw light on the strange happenings ia Fiat No. 14, and from the caretaker, the lift boy. Edna. and some old newspapers he heard this peculiar story. It seemed that some three years before a couple had taken these apartments, giving the name of Zekta. They were thought to be East Indians, although they both spoke ex- cellent English. The man seemed to be about forty-five years of age, but the woman scarcely twenty. She was very beautiful, and had a rich contralto voice. They feasrt with them an old withered mirmmy-iihe woman, who neither spoke nor understood English. The Zektas rarely if ever went (mt. They received no callers, although from their appearance they seemed to 00 persons of rank. The furnishing of their rooms from all accounts must have been both costly and luxuriant. Xone of the tradespeople were allowed to enter the apartments, but were i made to leave their parcels at the kitchen door; once or twice a glimpse of the woman had been caught, clothed in a gorgeous Orien- tal costume and hung with priceless jewels. and onoe a young grocery boy had entered a back hall and descried the man similarly clad. The woman's magnificent voice was often heard in weird and wild music, but otherwise, you would have hardly known the apartment was occupied. After about six months, orders were sent for ca-bs, etc.. trunks were moved, and Mr. Zekta went away, apparently to be gone for some time from the luggage he took with him. The very night he left, a tall, distinguished man asked for the Zeklas. As the door opened to admit him it upturned a heavy rug. and in the space of time it took to re- adjust it, the porter saw into the room. It was heavy with rich oriental draperies, lamps of exquisite workmanship, and coloured stones suspended from the ceiling, rich antique car- pets and rugs covered the floors, while every. where there were low divans covered with costly cushions. In the centre of the room stood the woman. wonderfully beautiful, her black hair falling over her shoulders, and her lithe, supple figure clad in transparent, clinging white gar- ments. As the man entered she uttered a cry of inexpressible joy, and he caught her tr,) his heart. With gutteral mutteringe the old servant succeeded in arranging the rug, and the door was slammed in the inquisitift porter's face. Th-e next, morning the body of a man was found frightfully mutilated in the court- yard. There were cuts and bruisee on the head and face which looked as if the body had fallen from a distance. It was ideuti. fied as that of the man who had called upon the Zektas the night before, and it was decided that a search of the apartment, must be made. It had been ohse-rved from the court-yard that the little window of the bath- room had been broken, pieces of glace being scattered on the ground. After repeated call- ing and knocking at No. 14. with no result, the doors were broken in and a £ &arch was made. The place was deserted. The lamps still burned with a flickering light, and a heavy perfume hung over the place, deadening and intoxicating the senses. Everywhere there was peace. No disorder, no evidences of oon- flict. Through the bedrooms, the halls, the kitchen, the searching party went until they. came to the bath-room. "Here. we shall see sights." remarked the detective. "Thig tub was well 6haped for such a. poe of work." answered his companion. The lid was down and locked tight. Ifewaa a gruesome sight which met their gaze. With staring eyes and wide open mouth the body of the woman Zekta laid stiff and cold. while the water in the tub had turned to blood. which flowed from her left breast, where it was discovered her heart had been literally torn out. "Great God! this is the work of a bell- hound," muttered the detective, "I would like the pleasure of running this creature down." but his wish was never to be granted. There was absolutely no trace of the niw, derer. The old woman bad vanished from off the face of the earth. Upon the stairs were found bits of dark cloth and a few drops of blood, which led the detective to think that she had taken that way to depart. The. affair crea-t-ad a great sensation. BotBe persons advanced the theory that the old woman committed the deed. but such a thins seemed impossible, as eil as improbable. That such a weak decrepi-t creature could have murder-ad two people—one a man uf powerful build, the other a young, agile woman., and thrust the body of the m&o through a window mnc-h too small for it— seemed out of the question. The only solution which secured paabable was that the man Zekta had not left town *A he pretended, but had crept up the back stairs which led into the kitchen, a ad t.b88t laid in wait for his victims.
