[By Special-Arrangement.-C*)eright.) I THE I [HILLMAN'S LEGACY, By W. K. HARMLEY. 1 -0 L At certain hours of the day a sombre- coloured vehicle—rather smaller than a pan- technicon, rather larger than a horse-box— arrives in the court-yard of Guildhall; it is immediately backed in front of a grim-look- ing entrance, furnished with heavy folding doors that open outwards; these are met by two similar doors opening from the rear of the conveyance, and through the temporary Bridge of Sighs so constructed, passengers by Black Maria., to give the technical name, pass from a movable to a stationary prison. This somewhat lugubrious arrival is gene- rally attended by a little crowd of loafers, whose imagination seems to be stimulated by the sight of the feet of those that work iniquity," or are accused of it, and which are just visible between the pavement and the bottom of the overlapping doers. Familiar as this scene must be to most Lon- doners, I had never chanced to witness it until one day when, having been subpoenaed to give evidence at the adjoining court of justice, I was standing on the steps of the building awaiting my turn to appear. Although myself a medical man, and fairly familiaj- with the seamy side of life, there is something in the moral perversion revealed before a magistrate which causes me a feel- ing of nausea that no physical disorder can provoke, so I was glad to stand outside watch- ing the pigeons and breathing the fresh air as long as possible. Thus engaged, the entrance of the afore- mentioned conveyance furnished a not unwel- come distraction, and I found myself among the little group of habitual spectators, indulg- ing like them in speculations concerning the owners of the various types of feet that crossed the pavement. Even in circumstances so opprobious, precedence is accorded to the fa-ir sex, so I was not surprised that the first footsteps to pass were accompanied by a rustle of draperies, an occasional giggle, or a half-suppressed scream. Then there was a short panse; sundry lower extremities of the well-known official garb passed rapidly to and fro, and then, moving slowly between two representatives of authority, came a pair of low Oxford shoes, which at once rivetted all my attention. High in the instep, rather long, and laced in a peculiar manner, they were surmounted by grey trousers turned up at the heel, and showing a narrow strip cf black leather sewed round the inner edge. The stocking was blue, and no sooner had shoe, stocking. and trousers appeared in sight than my mind involuntarily flew back to old student days in the operating theatre at Bart's, and I felt no more doubt concerning the identity of the figure on the further side of that thick oaken door tha,n if my eyes had been suddenly gifted with the penetrative powers of those marvel- lous Rontgen rays then just discovered. Indeed, so absolute was my conviction and, I must add, so great my astonishment that at first I scarcely noticed the solicitor's clerk calling my name; Lid even while giving evi- deiEia bsfore iiis tiagistrats my utocst .faculty of msiital concentration was retjoired to prevent my thoughts from wandering away to early days at the hospital and later epi- sodes of travel and adventure spent in com- pany with the man who, I felt convinced, had just passed before me. I The e-we-a very commonplace one—which had occasioned my presence at the Guildhall being disposed of, I found I had no time to make inquiries that day; but next morning, on taking up an illustrated paper. I saw at once that I had divined the truth. There, sketched to the life, stood Henry Gisburne, an old fellow-student of mine. just as I had known him, and now the centre of hostile glances and surrounded by the usual concomi- tants of a sensational trial for murder. About this time the East End of London had been terrorised by a series of crimes to which no rational motive could be assigned. In no case, apparently, had either fear, anger, jealousy, robbery, or revenge prompted the deed. Incriminating secrets were not likely to have been in the possession of the victims; no violent quarrels were alleged against them, and money was always focad in their pockets. Still, the crimes continued, and the police 1 were at their wits' end to discover the per- petrator. It is now, however, time to retra-ce our steps a. little, in order that my relations with the man thus gravely oompremised may be understood. Some ten years before the incident just related I had joined the medical school attached to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, and there became acquainted with another student rather older than myself, whose name I have just given. Although well ahead of me in most subjects, we had been thrown a good deal together, and I had always found his society instructive and inspiriting. Later, when we were both duly qualified, he had obtained a temporary appointment in India, and I accompanied him ae assistant, thinking to gain general knowledge and see something of the world before settling down. I remained with him two years, but most of the time was more occupied attending to my I own health than studying that of others, and shortly before my return the outbreak of one of those little wars whkh so fre- quently occur without disturbing govern- mental serenity, found us in the middle of a holiday tour among the hills near the North- west Frontier, and exactly in the line nf march of a small punitive force. The oppor- tunity to add a few months' campaigning to our Indian experiences was too tempting to be lost, so we arranged to ride with the medical staff. Towards the cloee of hostilities Gis- burne and I were sent back in I attendance upon a convoy of wounded. The I march was Flow and difficult, and while rounding the end of a broad mountain range, I and near a Tillage, the name of which I for- got. we'were molested by a determined little band of snipers under a leader well-known in the district and notorious for fcroc.ity. At last the militant part of our detachment by a clever ruse got the hotter of these fellows, and we were under die impression that they j were all killed. That night we cncaanped close to the scene of the skirmish, and one of the privates hav- ing told Gisburne that the leader of the enipere bore a strong resemblance to himself, I we both went up to get a look at him. j White benrfing down to examine the wound which had sealed the fate of this pertinacious opponent, and which from its position in the abdomen could not fail to be mortal, I wtas startled by a movement in the lingers of i the left hand closing round a long-pointed stone. Before I could draw back the man raised himself into a sitting posture ajid j struck at me with this primitive weapon, but, his hand was unsteady; the stone flew from hie grasp, and hitting my companion on t.be I app-er iip, broke the four middle teeth. ¡ Gisburne was a, good-kwtong fellow and I rather proud of his teeth, wbicb were wbite and regular, and like other features in his face resembled these of the savage. This latter ëeeiPC bkwd flow leaned back with a smile of satisfaction, and breathed his last in evident contentment with his parting- exploit. "By all that's surgical:" exclaimed Oia burne. I'll repair this damage at the rascal's expense." and. hastening back to the camp, returned in a few minutes, carrying the neces- sary implements. With my assistance the broken stumps were quickly removed from his own jaw and replaced by the four cor- responding incisors taken from our moribund assailant. This operation, known to dentists as engrafting, is of the kind we doctors term heroic (though whether the patient or opera- tor be the hero is still a moot point), and in this case proved materially sucoessful. On the other hand, the new teeth were distinctly shorter than those they had re-placed, giring additional prominence to the canines, and further accentuating resemblance to the fallen hill-man. On our way back to camp Gisbunis requested 6ilenoe on my part, to which I readily consented; the more willingly as our companionship was just at aa end, a letter being on its way which was to recall me to England. A few days later, having myself received a shot in the knee, my friend, while dressing the wound, took occasion to suck away some of the blood—rather unnecessarily, as it seemed to me; and during the few weeks we remained together a strangeness on his part was observ- able, hardiy to be ac conn tad for by fatigue or the strain of unaccustomed surroundings, ings. I now received the letter just alluded to. It was from my father, who required assistance in his practice; and I returned home, sadder and wiser, and with a stiff joint —which still gives me trouble—to remind me of my Afghan experiences. At Bombay I said Good-bye" to my friend; and subsequently we had never met, nor, in fact-after a short, desultory corres- pondence—had further com-nunkation passed between us. Naturally, while reading through the report. of the preliminary proceedings at the Guild- hall, these reminiscences crowded back upon my mind, but the case was too clear for me to even wish to render assistance. Gisburne was evidently well defended, and could gain nothing from my support. All things con- sidered—and at the time professional and family affairs required my whole attention-l decided to endeavour to banish this disturb- ing influence from my mind. This course I adhered to as long as the case remained before the public, nor should I have thought further reference to it desirable, had I not, after the lapse of a few months, received the following extraordinary commoaica.iian. It came to me under cover from an official source, and may well bring these recollec- tions to a close. It is also to be commeeded to those interested in the study of the obscure relations subsisting between the material and moral attributes of human life:— Newgate. Dear Humphreys,—Sorry as I am to dis- tress you with the perusal of this letter, my duty to others compel me to write it. I can judge of your astonishment at receiving aach a communication from mae- or, perhaps, I should say from us—for ever since that unhappy day on the Afthaa frontier, I have been conscious of a dmui entity within me which all the science we imbibed at Bart's is insufikasBt to explain. I wite in haJ-A and were it otisersBis# neither cf us Feocu-es to be Deli tha*. our temperament, iastiaefci, impulses vary in gtvot measiare according to the oonstituttaa of the blood—the<t £ hs blood itself is but a currant of germs full of inscrutable energies. and that the inrtrodue- tion of assimilative, but different perms may entirely change its composition. Until, however, I had made the experiment you alone know of in oorpore vili on my own person, assuredly I could never ha.ve dreamed that a man's nature, disposition* and moral character might be radically affected in this manner. I am unable to write a long letter, nor will I harass you with a detailed account of all the pt-ages of the change which was at work within me even before we separated; much less should I be inclined to burden you with a recital of the incidents to which that change gave rise, and of which those you may have eeen mentioned in the papers are but a small part. You were a witness to the rash act of innoculation which imparted to me the "life currents" and nature of a savage, and can explain to my relatives the scientifio aspects of the case. This is the service I require from you. Had I thought perpetaal imprisonment preferable to extinction I should have summoned you at the trial, but the reoolleo- tion of the horrors through which I have passed—little as I feel my real self responsible for them-is too vivid, now that I have recovered my old mind, to permit. even the wish to live. Good-bye. You will not receive this until--so far as I am concerned—all things have been made plain. HENRY GISBURXE.
