[By Special Arranget-ne.-it.- Copyright.] FLAT NO. 14. By MARGARET JOHNSON BROWN. They were tired and worn with the journey, and almost everything- which presented itei'.f would have been met with critical eyes, so as thoy wandered from room to room they made many comment..s not altogether flattering. j "Yon say this was rented ready furnished before?" Mrs. Thompson asked the lean sallow- faced girl, whose furtive glances took in the details of dress and manner of each of the party of five, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, their daughter ancl son-in-law (Mr. and Mrs. Frederick), and little girl Clarisse. "Yes'm, it's been rented several times before." and it struck Mrs. Frederick that that remark held some hidden meaning delivered as it was with a most singular in- flection of voice. "Why. what's the matter with it?" asked Mrs. Thompson sharply. "Nothing at all, mam, only people don't seem to stay long. I h:iTf'I been here with two different set3 of people now. and Mrs. Adams has engaged me for you, that is if I give satisfaction." "Come on here, Madge, here is something you will like." called Mr. Frederick from another room. "Oh! how horribly ghastly," exclaime<d Mrs. Frederick. "You superstitions little goose," laughed her husband." I knew you would say that." "Why, mother, it looks like a coffin," cried Clarisse, and 80 it did. The room they were in was a dark, narrow one, with a small, dingy window overlooking a courtyard; a stationary waste stand was crowded into one corner, and along the entire length of the wall on one side stretched the bath tub. shaped exactly like a coffin, only many inches deeper, and to make:tl1 hideous likeness more complete a. cover fitted tight over the top. "Oh dearest, I shall be afraid to bathe in that thing," eaid Mrs. Frederick, "for I am sure the lid would fall down, and I would drown. "Nonsense! here is a. catch to hold it up," answered Mr. Frederick. "Do you know. I think some persons have extraordinarily sensitive organisations. I have always believed that people leave the impress of their characters in their houses, and that any one with a very sensitive nature can get that impression by going into. and living in, that house," said Mrs. Frederick as they sat around after dinner, the two men smoking and sipping their coffee. "I think that statement slightly mixed, Madge." answered Mr. Thompson, "explain it more fully, go into details." "Well Father here's what I mean. I sup- DDSe, I will have to draw a diagram before you understand. If. say for instance, eome one had lived here, right hero: in this fat and had been miserable, that tragic events had taken place here. not necessarily death, I believe that I could and would feel after living here awhile the cffect of those events. I don't mean that I could tell you what had happened, but that an unrest, a nervous ex- citement. a feeling of dual existence—mine and that of those poor souls whose unhappi- ness had been sheltered here—would rest upon me. "Ahõurd" grunted Mr. Frederick. "Eidicolons!" exclaimed Mrs. Thompson. Mr. Thonipson looked at his daughter kindly and said, "You are morbid. Madge; your bad health has made you so, and you should not give up to ii. you must know that sach a theory does not stand to reason, that there is no reaJ sense in it." "Oh! fiddlesticks! don't pay any attention ta Madge, she always did believe in ghosts," yawned Mr. Frederick. "You are all a set of stupids, and have no fine perceptions," laughed Madge, as she kissed her father and mother good-night." After the lights were out, and the regular breathing at her side told her that her lord and master had gone to the land oÏ dreams, Madge laid awake and thought of what she had said. As tiie minutes slipped away she dozed off, or, at least, she tried to persuade herself afterwards that she did. The room waô dark save for a bead of light. Suddetliya feeling of terror crept over her. Something was in the room; something moved. Whre she could not tell, but it was near, quite near. She tried to reason with herself, to raise herself up in bed and lovit around, to call to her husband, but a. para- lysing sense of unutterable fear possessed her. She could not move, but all that time tha.t something moved and breathed and crept quite near. How long she endured that anguish she did not know, but after awhile little Clarisse uttered a shrill scream. "Mother I Mother! where are The Epell was broken. "L9wis, Lewis, go to Clarisse and turn up the light." "The child is all right, just had a bad dream and so have you," said Mr. Frederick, when Cla-riese had been patted back to sleep and Madge had been reasoned with, and laughed a-t. "Nevertheless, Lewis, I am not quite feeble- minded, and I did hear something in the room." "You were either aeleep, or else it was a mouse," answered her husbajid, and t'ier awhile the feeling of terror passed away and Madge slept. The next few days were spent in Bight-see- ing, and except for a sort of uncanny feeling which assailed Madge at times, and vhich she tried to convince herself waa the outcome of ill-health, nothing of any consequence occurred. After they had been occupying the flat for a fortnight, Madge and her husband went to the theatre. Mrs. Thompson not being at ail well stayed at home with Clarisse. When they returned they found the lights turned high in every room, and Mrs. Tliomp- son looking pale and worried. "Why! What is the matter, mother?" ex- claimed Madge. "I am so terribly upset," answered Mrs. Thompson. "After you three had left Edna a-sked if could not go out and see a friend, and I, of course, allowed her to go. She had hardly shut the door before Clarisse became extremely nervous and begged me to call her back, which I refused to do. The child grew frightfully pale and clung to me declaring 'that there was something in the house.' I tried to re-assure her. I turned up all the lights and took her from room to room examining them throughout, but to no avail. When we oarne to the bath-room she shrieked and hid her face, positively declaring that she would not go into that room for 'it was there.' 1 have really had a time of it. and I am all an-nerved; I Uúnk you are partly responsible for it. Madge. In the first pfoce Clarisse must inherit your high-strung ner- vous disposition, and then you eo often say things which encourage that tendency in her. I heard you say the other day that you would not take a bath in that tub at night for worlds. The child has heard all that and this is the consequence. It it very distress- ing," and Mrs. Thompson regarded her daughter rather severely. "It is. indeed. I am so Borry. Poor little heart! How she will suffer!" exclaimed Madge. "I must try to overcome my foolish- ness for her sake. Is she asleep now?" she asked. "Oh! yea, I rocked her to sleep in my arms, hut she hid her face on my shoulder and would not look jrp." The next day at luncheon, during a pause in the conversation, Madge looked up and said quite impressively, "I have a wretched cold after the theatre, to-night I shall take an awfully hot bath and try to get rid of it." "You won't take it in the bath-room will you. mother?" asked Olarisse uneasily. "Of course I will, my child, where else would I take it?" "Oh! mother, mother don't, please don't, you know you are afraid of that room at night. You said you were." "My dear little girl, don't be so absurd. Mother is not so foolish as to be afraid of any room. "You said you were any way," persisted the ohild, "and you'll be sorry if you do." No amount of re-assuring or explaining could convince her or calm her fears, and all day she pleaded with her mother not to do it, and always added "that she would be sorry if she did." Throughout the play a feeling of nervous- ness possessed Madge. She was distrait and uninteresting. When they returned her hus- band laughingly said, little girl, are you going to take that bath?" "Of course I am, Lewis," she answered, and added, "but I shall not lock the door, and if I don t come out soon you must come in and Bee if anything has happened to me." "Really, Madge, you carry that Bort of thing too tar," said Mrs. Thompson who had overheard the remark. "Well, I will go in and look around and take mine first." said Mr. Frederick, "and if anything is there it will get me. There surely could not be a ghost with such exe- crable taeCe as to oveflooii ate and get you is UHeferenoe. Madce. Madge undressed slowly, and amid much laughter and chnff went into the bath-room. "Nevertheless I shall not lock the door," she called out. The room looked wan and gruesome by the flickering candle light, the gas fixture having been removed this dismal means of jighting had to be resorted to. "That horrid lid," thought Madge as she stepped into the tub. For a few minutes after she had stretched out and the warmth of the water had commenced to soothe and rest her, she forgot her morbid fears. Presently she looked up. "Great God! what. v,-as that?" The little blindless window was flooded with a soft greenish light, and there, plain and dis- tinct. stood a man—no. not a man-a fiend! i.? h every 'e?-ti,,re. A Madge could distinguish every feature. A strange calmness came to her. She found herself gazing with a fearful persistency at that face. The hideous- ness of it fascinated her. Those blood- shot eyes held her. that lank, black hair, that loose-lipped mouth, distorted beyond human conception, those wolfish teeth all commanded her gaze. She even found her- self wishing she might raise herself up and get a better view of the figure which seemed draped in foreign-looking garments as was alac, the head. Even as the thought came to her the figure receded—resolved itself into the atmosphere, and Madge recovering f:om that deadly calm- ness v hich, had made her incapable of move ing, was about to shriek aloud when there it was again, but merciful Heaven! not at the window, but there at her side. Oh! why did they Dot come. Someone must help her. That thing meant her some harm; with a laugh more hideous than the noises of Hell it seemed to divire her thought. for he lifted up the sleeve of his coat and with a claw-like bloody hand grasped the lid and slowly, slowly it descended, and Madge sank deeper and deeper into some tiiack isickening depth with the echo of that fiendish laughter ringing iu her ears. "Mrs. Thompson. Mrs. Thompson. come and help me quick. Madge has fainted in tile bath-tub," cried Mr. Frederick. "Yes: it's what I should call a case of hys- teria. Nevertheless, in view of what you have told me. and of Mis. Frederick's own story I would change quarters at once. You say the lid of that tub was really down when you went into the room?'' asked the doctor. "It was. It was the sound of that thing falling which mads me go in," answered Mr. Fredez- ci,. "Most extraordinary' and you -.re certam you fastened it before you left the bath. room?" "Perfectly." "Well! truth is often ttranger than fictioa," remarked the doctor, "and this is certainly a queer story; it is very interesting to me. I shall try to Red out if anyone can throw any light on it, or if anything strange has ever oeeurrcd here. My advice to you, though, is to take that wife and child of yours out ilto the country at once." "I shall certainly do so," answered VI. Frederick. The doctor set about '.t once to see if any fact could be found which would possibly throw light on the strange happenings ia Fiat No. 14. and from the caretaker, the lift boy, Edna, and some old newspapers he beard this peculiar story. It seemed that some three years before < ? cars before a couple had taken these apartments, giving the name of Zekta. They were thought to be East Indians, although they both spoke ex- cellent English. The man seemed to be about forty-five years of age, but the womaa scarcely twenty. She was very h«nitifai, and had a rich contralto voice. They had with tchem an old withered mummy-like woman, who neither spoke nor understood English. The Zektas rarely if ever went oaL t They received no callers, although from aPPeaxamee they seemed to be personig of rank. The furnishing of their rooms from all accounts must have been both costly and luxuriant. None of the tradespeople were allowed to enter the apartments, but were made to leave their parcels at the kitchen door; once or twice a glimpse of the woman had been caught, clothed in a gorgeous Orien. tal costume and hung with priceless jewels, and once a. young grocery boy had entered a back hall and descried the man similarly clad. The woman's magnificent voioe was ottes heard in weird and wild music, but otherwise. you would have hardly known the apartment was occupied. After about six months, orders were sent for cabs, etc.. trunks were moved, and Mr. Zokta. went away, apparently to be gone for some time from the luggage he took with him. The very night he left, a tall, distinguished man asked for the Zektas. As the door opened to admit him it upturned a heavy rug, and in the space of time it took to re- adjust it, the porter saw into the room. It was heavy with rich oriental draperies, lamps of exquisite workmanship, and coloured stones, suspended from the ceiling, rich antique car- pets and rugs covered the floors, while every. where there were low divans covered with costly cushions. In the centre of the room stood the woman, wonderfully beautiful, her black hair falling over her shoulders, and her lithe, supple figure clad in transparent, clinging white gar- ments. As the man entered she uttered a cry of inexpressible joy, and he caught her to his heart. With gutteral mutterings the old servant snoceeded in arranging the rug, and the door was slammed in the inquisitim porter's face. ? The next morning the body of a man was found frightfully mutilated in the court- yard. There were cuts and bruises on th* head and face which looked as if the body had fallen from a distance. It was identi- fied as that of the man who had called upoav the Zektas the night before, and it was decided that a search of the apartment miaafe be made. It had been observed from the court-yard that the little window of the bath- room had been broken, pieces of glass being scattered on the ground. After repeated call- ing and knocking at No. 14, with no result, the doors were broken in and a Search was made. The place was deserted. The lamps still burned with a flickering light, and a heavy perfume hung over the place, deadening and intoxicating the senses. Everywhere there was peace. No disorder, no evidences of con- flict. Through the bedrooms, the balls, the kitchen, the searching party went until they came to the bath-room. "Here we shall see sights," remarked the detective. "This tub was well shaped for such apitov of work." answered his companion. The lid was down and locked tight. It was a gruesome sight which met their gaze. With staring eyes and wide open mouth the body of the woman Zekta laid stiff and oold, while the water in the tub had turned to blood. which flowed from her left breast, where it was discovered her heart had been literally torn out. "Great God! this is the work of a hell, hound," muttered the detective, "I would like the pleasure of running this creature down. but his wish was never to be granted. There was absolutely no trace of the mur- derer. The old womaoi had vanished from off the face of the earth. Upon the stairs were found bits of dark cloth and a few drops of blood, which led the detective to think that she had taken that way to depart. The affair crea-tad a great sensation. Sozne persons advanced the theory that the old woman committed the deed, but such a thing seemed impossible, as well a.s impzefcabU;. That such a weak decrepit creature c have murdered two people—o<ue a man of powerful build, the other a young, agile woman, and thrust tbe body of toe mao through a, window too small for it- seemed out of the question. The only solution which seemed probable was that 'the man Zekta had not left town :&4 he pretended, but had crept up the bade stairs which led into the kitchen, and them laid in wait for his victims. bp4.
