[By Special A rrangement.-Copy right.] THE DIARY OF '96, By MADGE ROBERTSON. On last New Year's morning Hugh Hellems received a diary among his gifte. It was the ueual custom of Hugh's people to thus present him. It was also usual on Hugh's part to drop it in his top drawer under his collar- box and allow it to remain buried there, subject to spasmodic attempts at resurrection until on in midsummer. Then it invariably went on the top shelf in the billiard-room, where his old school books were kept, to accumulate dust, together with the unused diaries of past years, But in this year of our Lord eighteen hundred and ninety-six a change in Hugh's treatment à( his New Year's quest took pla-ce. The change was merely reflected, having its primary light in a change which was taking pla-ce in the young gentleman himself. He had taken to solitary smoking, to letting the gas etay unlighted in his room, to gazing in the fire for an hour or so before retiring. This would have been considered a very bad sign by his sister had she known anything about it. There was a rumour that he had declined to lead a cotillon, but no one was assured enough to assert so definitely. But so much was certain that Hugh Hellems, young gentleman of leisure, was out a great deal and at some place where neither h's people nor his friends ever met him, and, further, that he was keeping a diary. The publication of the latter "fact was due to his enterprising sister. That shrewd young person had one day a heart intent on a new white silk handkerchief with H on it, for the use of someone who was not Hugh. And having a frugal mind she early resolved to expend the money usually devoted to the said someone on herself, and abstract the birthday gift handkerchief from her unwary brother. In the course of her subsequent and unlawful expedition through his belongings she unearthed the diary and idly opened it. She is her own authority for the fact that the search was promptly discontinued, and that she most dishonourably proceeded to acquaint herself with all the written matter contained therein. There was no excuse for it," she observed afterwards, meditatively, but I am awfully glad I did." The first day, New Year's Day, plunged the reader into the middle of things and let her gasping. "Jan. 1st. Shall write myself down an ass to put up with the things that girl does to me. Went to call on her and wish her a happy New Year. Got snubbed for my pains. Wa.s edified to learn by personal observation that New Yeax's calling is not ro long out of date that the young woman of the present day can enjoy it as an antique. Wanted her to come and hear Lohengrin with self and sister. Thought I could manage sister-" An interruption is said to have occurred here v.hile the much-inoenssd "sister" asked herself blankly who the girl could be, and argued in reply, with quick feminine percep- tion of social values, that, since she could not be relied on to furnish her own chaperon, the unknown damsel was probably a stranger boarding in one room, cooking her break- fast over a gaa jet. rghi The diary wae resumed: Was refused quite calmly. It teems she was writing an article on advice to girls on how to treat young men. I happened along nicely in time to give point to the moral. Yon must know the young men with whom you go to the theatre very well indeed.' She reminded me of the recent date of our acquaintance. Endeavoured to show her how I deserved double pity on that acoount. Left her writing. "January 15th.-Called again to-night. Sat in her library for an hour while she wrote a letter to the man she says she is engaged to. Remarked at regular intervals that she had to stop it, or I should leave the room. Listened .between times to her calm observa- tion that she was keeping me so that when she got through I could post the letter, and he would not be anxious concerning her state of health. Stamped about the room, and vowed everything, but—waited. Consented at last to post the letter if she would forget the other man for the space of two oonsecutive minutes-it takes that long to do it properly. Had to go without the condition. Heard her laugh as I let the portiere flap. Outside it was snowing, everything feline and canine. She offered me an umbrella through the window. Dashed down the steps in a rage. Got madder every step down the avenue. Before I got to the sub-station was soaked through with wet snow and rage. Finally, had a spasm, and tore the letter to bits. Then picked the bits up—couldn't leave her writing on New York street&carried them home and burnt them." His sister sighed wearily. To think of my having a brother who could be so-maudlin." January 2.1et, Stayed away from her all week. Bored myself to death at the club." January 26th. Couldn't stand the pressure any longer. Went round this morning to con- fess. Told her, and then tried to move her with a harrowing account of my feelings. She laughed, and-you cannot keep angry with a girl with a laugh like the silveriest chime of Gracechnrch-I laughed too. That nearly ruined me. After I had reduced my face to gloom again, worked on her feelings some more. Was finally successful after an hour's blazing hot work. Then she told me the whole affair was a plant to get me excited and incidentally furnish her with more amnsement-" "Amusement, indeed," commented hie sister. That's a very artful young wonfan. What fools men are." And possibly an article. She thought it ought to be worth at least ten dollars to her." I always said," observed Hugh's sister, reminiscently, that a literary girl was more dangerous than a chorus girl, because she is apt to have more brains, and there is quite ae attractive a flavour of Bohemianism about her—sometimes," with a saving remembrance of New Tork's society authoresses. But let me finish this effusion." The blooming letter was to & cousin about some commission or other. There was no engagement and she had no lover. Was such ) an all-round idiot that I offered to supply the vacancy. Got the usual unpremeditated offer of friendship—con—bless her!" The reader executed a thankful pas seul, then indulged in gnawing curiosity as to who the girl could be. I expect I shall have to give up the gas-jet theory. No boarding- house girl would refuse Hugh. Possibly, though, she does not know how rich he is, and may no one ever tell her." "February 1st. Was passing her house— that's a lie, went round th&A way on pur- pose; what's the use of a man lying in his diary which not a soul but himself ever lays eyes upon?" H'm, I feel rather smaal" commented the man's sister. —and dropped in. Found her in tears." "Well, I don't like to be uncharitable," groaned his Hist-er. "but some one has evi- dentiy told her." l, y brother, last relative ab8 had m the world, just died away off on the Pacific coast. That settled it. Took her in my arms and refused to let her go. After a bit she stopped sobbing, and I kissed her again- well. confound it all! I kept on kissing her, and in a little she grew quiet in my arms. Did not say much to her, but she under- stands. To-morrow I shall get at something definite." February 8th.—Found her to-day very pensive, dressed in a simple black gown. Dear girl. She blushed when I came in. Even I had no idea how pretty she could look when she blushed. That finished me, and, some- how, I got her into my arms again. After that it was almost plain sailing. She con- fessed that she had not cared for me before, but now-what a kiss means to a girl! To a girl who has not had other lovers! And to me? Well, I have kissed other girle-yes. But her kiss—it was heaven' And to think," hie sister said. gloomily. that I can never quote bits of this to Hugh, never recite it to him, never tell him I have read it. Was ever a girl so tried? Oh! what chance to lose!" —— A man never can be grateful enough to the girl who promises to marry him. And she did so. I was filled with wonder, and asked her why she agreed to my proposal. There was nothing about me, I am sure. She acknowledged that with a delicious bit of coquetry. It was because, she said, I was such a useful copy' that she could not get along without me. How I love a dash of humour in a girl, and Mary Tan Suyten has plenty-" "Mary Van Suyten!" shrieked his delighted sister. "Why, of course; oh! Hugh, you darling! I forgot about her writing; why, how gay! I must see the rest of this." February 18th. Good-bye, you wind-bag of a diary. Have no time to waste on you at present. To-morrow you join your brothers. Now, to dream of Mary! Wonder how soon I can tell sister and the rest." I wonder," remarked sister. [THE EXD.]

THE WORD AND THE BLOW.
THE WORD AND THE BLOW. There is an excellent example in Chinese history of trouble arising from the fact that two potentates had not finished their sen- tences." The story goes that one sent a mes- sage to the other, saying, Send me a black dog with yellow spots, or else The insulted recipient of this message would hear no more of it, but took advantage of the messenger's slight pause to chop off his head. Then he despatched a messenger of his own, who, in delivering his message, got as far as I have no such dog; and if I had-" where- at he made an eternal pause, as men do when their heads are severed from their bodies. Then the two potentates, feeling that, if any- one had cause, they had, went to war against each other. and laid their respective terri- tories waste. Finally, when enough blood had been spilt on each side to justify the laying of the foundations of a peace, a diplomatic explanation was, of course, required by both powers. For this purpose they approaehed each other in person, and one ruler demanded of the other: Now, what did you mean by, Send me a black dog with yellow spots, or else-?" Why," was the surprised answer, "I meant a black dog with yellow spots, or else some other colour. But," retorted he in his turn, what did you mean by, I have no such dog; and if I had-'?" Oh!" ex- claimed the other, I simply meant what I I said, and what my messenger was about to repeat to you when you removed his worth- leas head, namely, that I had no such dog. and that if I had I should be only too pleased to send it to you!" As these explanations were considered quite satisfactory, peace was immediately proclaimed, and friendly rela- tions were established between the survivors.
I AT LAST.
I AT LAST. The Americans are determined to rise superior in everything. On the other side a train has reached its destinatilon three years after scheduled time. It left Bolivar, just across Galveston Bay, for Beaumont, 75 miles away, towards the end of 1900, and was caught in the great storm which so nearly destroyed Galveston. Thirty miles of the track were washed away, and the train was left stranded on a sandy waste. The storm sent the railroad into bankruptcy. and no effort to rescue the engine and cars was made until recently. The road is now undergoing repairs and development, and a little while ago the traila was drawn into Beaumont, where it wae greeted by a, cheering multitude.
