[By Special Arrangement—Copyright] A DOUBLE DOSE, By W. W. FENN. When two old friends meet for the first time as men of thirty, after having parted as laids of nineteen, they consider it a duty they owe to each other as Britons and brothers to dine together. They also regard some talk about common friends of their eaJy days as another, if secondary, part of that duty. Latimer Druce and William Mareh on a certain winter's night not long- aITO were doing their duty determinedly, if not sternly, at a snug little house in Karley-street, a braes plate on the door of which proclaimed it as belonging to Dr. Latimer Druce, F.R.C.P. An address card standing on the dining-room mantlepieoe, bearing the superscription Captain William MarEh. R.E., Army and Navy Club. S.W., may be taken as sufficient indication of the career selected by the second of the two friends. They were both old West- minsters, and later college chums, and the latter, after getting hi", commission, had been in India nearly the whole of the intervening years. lie was now home on leave, and happening one afternoon to pass down Harley- street bad wen the name on the door-plate. "By Jove," he involuntarily exclaimed, as he paused to look at it. "Old Drucc, as I'm a einiier! F.E.C.P., too—I'm uncommonly glad. I knew he was going in for medicine, and that's all I've ever heard of him since. I'll leave my card on him. I should like to see him again, and have a good jaw about fellows and things. Vender if he's altered much." Dr. Jammer Druce was not at home, bat the card of his friend duly reached him, and like a good fairy brought about that perform- ance of the Briton's duty above referred to. And a mighty pleasant and run rising per- formance it proved, the most amusing part of it properly coming on towards its close. Amidst the talk about a host of former comrades, the name of one Parkinson turned up in connection with a railway accident. Yep, poor Purkinson was in it," the doctor was saying, and what followed is rather a jolie. I think I must tell you. You recollect him at Westminster?'' Perfectly," replied the captain. Rather a weak, silly chap though, wasn't he, if I remember rightly? Supposed to have a rich father, and good expectations. Used to get awfully bullied. Not a bad fellow." No, a right good fellow, and much to be pitied, in spite of his good expectations, which have been realised." "You've se-an him then of late years?" Oh yes. he's a patient of mine. Not that I I or anybody can. do much for him. It's a bad caee. Some slight spinal lesion. We can't quite localise it, but it brings on periods of nervous depression. Not much to be done— rest, quiet, and fresh air—nothing else," and the doctor, puffing quietly at hie cigar, heaved a sigh suggestive of regret at the limited resources of science. "But what's the joke? You were g-oing to tell me some joke which followed the railway accident. It doesn't sound funny so far." "Ah no, to be sure," continued the doctor, brightening up again. I forgot. Yes, I'll tell you the whole story. Here, have another cigar, Billy. The night is young yet." The friends re-ee^iled themselves for a protracted sitting—more duty hae to be done. Then the doctor began: "As I told you, when I first qualified I got appointed assistant medical officer at that heaven-forsaken place, Plymsmoor-fifteen hundred convicts to look after, and that sort of thing. I'd hardly been there a month when I had a, note from Purkinson, saying he was very ill. and was coming down to consult me. I tried to dissuade him, but to no pur- pose. Fancy a fellow travelling two hundred and fifty miles-to consult another fellow like me! Well, never mind that. He came- arrived a perfect wreck, for, as luck would have it. he was in the very train that was smashed up at Queensbridge, the "Flying Hollander." However, he wasn't hurt bodily, and so he managed to get on to Portstown, and thence, by the seven miles' drive across the moor. to the prison. I needn't say that the shock he received upon an already shat- tered nervous system about finished him up. He hadn't been sleeping for nights and nights he told me, and entreated me to give him a sleeping draught. I refused, knowing it was bad for him, and I thought if I made him jolly in my quarters, gave him a shakedown for the night, and sent him home on the morrow, that that was the best treat- ment. He had such a wretched night, how- ever, that when I packed him off next day I yielded to his entreaties, and made him up a mild sleeping draught-sulphonal, bromide of potassium, á little chloroform, and so on. I thought it wouldn't do him as much harm as another sleepless night. 'Now,' I said, look here, Purkinson. Go home, dine well, and take half this bottle of medicine to-night, and half to-morrow night. Mind, there are two doa&?, and promise me you don't take them both at once. Under- stand?' And he promised. "But the sight of the place, its dreary sur- roundings, and the gangs of convicts at work on the moor as we drove across it affected him straugely-badly. I left him at Ports- town, for I bad to go back to the prison. He was to return to to-;vji by the night mail. Judge then my amazement when I tell you that within eix-and-thirty-hours. hanged if he wasn t back again at Plymsmoor Prison, though under rather different circumstances." "What had happened, then?" inquired Cap- tain Marsh, much interested. vvby, simply this, resumed the doctor. "But, stop, he shall tell you in his own words. He wrote a long account afterwards of what brought him back. He was always fond of scribbling, you know. He had it type-written, and gave me a copy. It have it somewhere; it makes quite a sensational story, fit for a magazine. You shall read it." After searching in a neighbouring bureau the doctor selected a bulky epistle, which he handed to his friend, who, when he liad lighted a fresh cigar, opened it, and read as follows:- MY VISIT TO PLYMSMOOR PPJSON-AND MY EETUII.X. Onec more settled in my own rooms. I shall put on record the facts as they fell out after I parted with my good friend, Latimer Druce. that fatal afternoon at Portstown. I am -till in a wretched condition. My hand ehakes so that I can hardly write, ;;nd my ide.s do nut flow quite coherently. As arranged, I started for London in the up night mail. It ought to have gone right through to Rexeter without stopping, but it seems that the line was so damaged and ren- dered so unsafe by that miderab?le accident at QuecmAnidge that we had to pas& over it at a 8naiLs ?a?e. Indeed. I believe we actually Rtoppcd there for a minute or two more than onoo. At least, so I suppose, for I must state tha.t I was more than half ep-ye, i,-leepl Mark that!—I who had scarce had a wink for a week. It was oniy the fiendish whistling and screeching of the engine, I believe, that aroused me at all. Xow it must have been while we stopped that the scoundrel managed-Stay! I should explain, and begin at the beginning. Of course. I had the sleeping-draught- I persr axled Druce to give me sale in my pocket, and ?o impatient was I to get a&iee?) at any ri&k that it occurred to me that if I got a carriage to myself, and ?r? ]üd. in, 1 mi?ht take the draught on starting, :und, perhaps, ?'pep the whole way up to town. ¡ Why not? What could it matter whether I slept in bed. or in a suug railway carriage, so long as I Klept? And I am o&ten more I drowsy while tra, elling than at ?,, other time—sleep better, in faict, anywhere than I in bed. WeU, I tipped the guard, tb?re was plenty of room-he put me into a compartment alone, as I suggested, locked me up, and promised I shoukm't be disturbed tin we reached Paddmgton, at six m UM morning. DnvcUy jwc vwe oC, I fxno xnl fbe Potiom6 aœ the I moment I had done so I remembered that the bottle contained two d(}.I had taken them both at once, contrary to Druce's Strict directions' This discovery rather agitated me. Eow- ever, it couldn't be helped, and ere long, beginning to feel drowsy, I gradually grave myself up contentedly to the delicious novelty of the sensation. Thenceforth, for some hours, I can only suppose what hap- pened. Thus I can only suppose that we were not long in reaching the scene of the accident at Queen^bridge, that we slowed down a bit. and that the screeching and shouting partially aroused me. I can only suppose that I glanced out into the pitchy night, and almost as in a dream saw lights down below, and shadows moving hither and thither, flitting about like phantoms. This is all supposition, for everything waa so dark, dim, and dreamy that I could be sure of nothing. Yet a memory of it tells me there was reality behind it. It did not disturb me particularly, but I remember it, and I should say by the time we had got up ",peed again I was sound as a top—perfectly comatose, a-s doctors &ay—must have been. for hours. At any rate. I remember nothing after that stoppage, and the lights, and the whist- ling, until I felt myself violently shaken by a rough hand on my shoulder, and a loud, rough voice shouting in my ear. When I gradually opened my eyes, and sense began to return, it was a long time before I could realise anything. In fact, I was not quite conscious until I v.-as dragged ruthlessly out of the carriage on to the platform, for it was daylight, and we had stopped somewhere— may have been at the ticket platform near Paddington-l don't know. I only know there were guards, and a policeman, and people moving about, and someone saying: 'Well, he is a cool hand, ?L?how-fxst- clas?, too! And he's drcnk!—hes drun?' And then somebody else s.id. we ve got him—we've nabbed him, safe enough—no mistae,' and so on. I recollect the first thing that really brought me fully to myself was putting my hand up to my bewildered head, and feeling— good heayensl-yes. feeling that I had lost— well—my wig! for I must admit I have worTi a wig for some years. Well, it was gone, and my head wtte as bald as it is—in fact, natu- ralJy. When Captain Marsh reached this sentence in the manuscript he looked up at his medical friend and laughed, and said: "Poor old Purkinson Weil, it's just the sort 1, V c 11 jwt the r,,?rt of thing I should have guessed he -would do." Yes," the doctor acquiesced, smiling. Silly old chap—but since you saw him he has lost all his hair. Possibly owing to his general condition of health there's no accounting ior baldness. But his vanity couldn't stand it. and so—anyway, he wears a wig—has done for a long while. In the present case this little fact complicated matters rather unpleasantly, as you'll find. Finish this story." The other resumed, with a chuckle. Let us see. Where were Oh! here." as bald as it is-in fact, natu- rally. As I realised the truth, some fellow handed me a nasty, yellowish-grey cap, say- ing, Here, guv'ner, here's your I took it mechanically, and put it on. Then my eyes fell upon my garments—they were the same colour! But they were not mine! I never wore knickerbockers iu my life! And they were stamped all over with queer, black hieroglyphics. So was the jacket-a hideous costume. Here now, stir your slumps.' said the policeman, presently. Come on in here. Don't stand gaping about as if you didn't know where you wap, or what's up. You're copped agaiii, that's aJl. Come on in here, and don't you make no attempt to slip us, 'cause it'll be the worse for you. And to be suBe, to think of the cheek of you, travelling- first-class, indeed" It would be vain for me to attempt to describe in detail what ensued. Dazed, bewildered, alarmed, it took me many minutes to master the true estate of the case; but what had really happened wae this. By some unaccountable means I had been trans- formed into an escaped convict, and was treated aa one, for undoubtedly I was dressed as one! 13ut how-liow had the trans- mogrification coma about? "When at length I had sufficiently collected my fits to inquire and protest, I was jeered at, and told to shut up, aad to let them have no more of my cheek, and almost before I knew it I wae han-dcufiea. Alter awhue, and v.hen I was seated in the shed of a waiting- room. guarded by the policeman and a rail- way porter, the former yielded to my entreaty, for information. It's all your kid. you know.* said be. but it just comes to this in a nutshell. An hour or two before your lordship arrived, our inspector ha.d a wire as he was to welcome you if you happened to be travelling our way. Of course, there was a regular description of you, too, so as ve mightn't miss you. ,Iiou?-h .vou're a bit Height five feet five—though you're a bit taller, I reekonyes blue, smooth, hairless facc. and head bald as a coot.' The man paused, then added, "Well, there you are, no mistake; only we didn't expect to find you, as I say, travelling first class.' Ere long two more policemen arrived. I was conveyed to the nearest police-station, subjected to all sorts of indignities in spite of my remonstrances, protects, and assertions, and that same evening I found myself in the custody of two warders, on my way back to Plymsmoor again." Here the doctor and his friend looked at each other for a moment, and then burst out laughing. Ohl I see." said the soidier. Wben Purkinson arrived at the prison, you, of course, were sent for, and were able to prove his identity, poor old chap." Oh. yes. but our people had found out their mistake before that, though not until they had got him back to Plymsmoor. They sent for me because Parkinson was so ill. I found him prostrate on a sofa in the Governor's drawing-room. There had been little difficulty in discovering that he was not 2792, the convict who had escaped three days before, although the clothes were his. and the fact that he was veiy bald and smooth-facet.1, like Purkinson. bad. of course, for a while confirmed the officers in supposing they had caught 27S2. The bald pate seemed un- answerable." But how on earth," inquired Marsh, "had two thousand—and whatever it was—contrived to transfer his toggery to Purkinson? It sounds like a pantomime trick." Ah! that remained a mystery for several weeks, until, at last, they caught the right man by a fluke. Caught him faked out in poor Purkinson's beautiful clothes, and his most lovely, glossy wig. The latter, naturally. had completely disguised No. 2792, and had enabled that humorist—and a humorist ha was—to elude dectection on many occasions." Quite so," said the friend. I guessed as much. But still, how did the fellow manage to dress up poor Purkinson in the railway carriage? How did he get in? Was it while the train paused at the broken down bridge?" Yes. He'd escaped to all that distance from the moor, and was in hiding tunong the debris of the accident. He confessed it all. for he was a wag-D, comic b-e,-gar-amd made quite a good story of it. Swore he'd found a carriage key among the ruin", and. seeing a gentleman alone, got into Purkinson's com- partment. Fonnd the gentleman sound asleep, examined, and robbed him. Discovered he wore a wig, took it off. tried it on his own bald pate, found it fitted. Then seeing that the gent didn't wake, the grand idea occnrrvd to him of changing clothes. You see now how it might have happened all plain enough. "HI when a i" put to it, he doesn't stick at trifles. Heaven knows hcv or where he slipped out of the carriage again when lie had completed his disguise. It's enough that he rot clear away for weeks; and, of course, the double dose of the opiate which Purkinson had foolishly taken made him perfectly help- less—a mere pliant log. as it were, in the other's hands." And hew is he DO'?'" asked Captain I Marsh, as he rose to depart. Fairly well." repeated Dr. Druce. "Better wel l rope.?i'e than one couid expect, perhaps. I'll tell him I've sesn you, and that you desired to t-,e remembered to him." Then the friends ehook hands, well satisfied with the wa.y they had done their duty that night, at any rate.
