[By Special Arrangement.—Copyright.] SAVED BY TWO BOYS, I By W. THOMSON. Those hardy adventurers who, at imminent risk and with infinite toil, crossed the Indian and wild beast infested great plains in the l early days of the California, gold fever, saw things fully as "wonderful—though different in kind-zis do "tiJJey that go down to the sea in ships." In the spiring of 185Q I, then a, stout young fellow of twenty-six, took the aforesaid fever in its most aggravated form, and thereu-pon incontinently joined a large party, organising a,t St. Louis for the overland journey-one somevrhat different from that of the present day, when the traveller, luxuriously domi- ciled in a palace-car, is whirled across the continent in less than a twentieth of the time we were obliged to occupy; and. too, without encountering any of the perils through which we had to fight our way. A full account of this eventful trip would require ten times the tspaoe at my command. Therefore, I will merely record the leading I incidents of a single day. Our out&t consisted of eight canvas-covered wagons, 24 mules, and twelve saddle-horses; while the party itself numbered 32 men, two women, and two boys of ffteen. the latter fealing much aggrieved because they had never been allowed to iake pajt in the fig-ht- ing. Although engaged in numerons skirmishes I with the liedfikins while passing through Colo- rado and what is now Arizona, we had oome to the old Spanisii trail in New Mexico with- out having loet a man or an animal, though I several of us had-received more or le&s serious arrow-wounds. This immuxuiy was to be pur- chased, however, only by never-ceas- I ing vigilance, as was evident from the fact that scarcely a &y passed in which we did not come upon the buracd wagons and mutilated, remains of parties who had been either too weak to beat I off the bloodthirsty foes or remiss in keeping proper guard. I One evening, after having been threatened ¡ all day by hovering swarms of mounted Apaches, we formed corral near the bank of a small stream, locally called Moro BJvcr, put everything in shape for defence and tethered the stocii out to grajse i err a few hours, six of our best rifle shots patrolling between the herd and the adjacent mountains to guard against surmise. But the prowling savages had totally disappeared, and at ten o'clock ithe cattle were brought in to the wagon- enclosed corral without any covert movement on the enemy's part having been detected. I "The red devils," observed Dave Ingram, our guide, "don't hardly ever attack a strong party at night, but, all the S3-me, we'll keep I. four sentries out, an' change 'em every hour, so there'll be no fear of any man gittin' drowsy. they'll need to keep their eyes skinned, though, for the night's black as i pitch, an' them varmints beats snakes all holler for quiet* crawlin' The two 1"oY5, Hugh and Walter, were standing close to the speaker, and one of them now %-aid, "Mr. Ingram, let us stay out with the guards for a while. We're mighty sharp-sighted, and we've both got good rifles. We haven't had any fun at all yet." "Well, young 'uns, if you call it fun to resk havin' 3IOUr hair lifted, you kin go out from two to three in the mornin'. The moon'll show UP by that time, so's you kin see your way baok to camp when you git skeered." Although the guide spoke thus lightly, he was weil aware that he was assigning to the I boys the most dangerous Taxmr of the j twenty four; but he knew how keen jwere all their senses, and that they rl-IIY might detect a hostile move- ment more quickly than could their older companions; while they were sure, he thought., to scamper off in time to save them- selves—a most egregious mistake. He should ¡ have known boy-nature better than that. The lads, hugely delighted by the long- wished-for concession, could not sleep at all that night, and when the quadruple two o'clock sentinels were ready to relieve their Predecessors the youngsters were on band, lively as crickets, and just a?ing for a LghL Two of the sentries were stationed on the ? mountainward side of ike camp—one at its east end, and one on the south, the west approach being supposedly protected by the river; while the boys were expected to amuse themselves for an hour by visiting each post in turn. But the adventurous young scamps didn't carry out the programme. It ■was altogether too ta.me for them. They ■hadn t been out ten minutes when an idea, worthy of a veteran plainsman, struck Hugn, who whispered to his chum, "Say, Walt, what's a y Walt, what,s to prevent the Indianl3 from stealing along under the low bank of the creek, and crawl- ing right into camp before anvone sees them?" That i- so," asseaited M aJter. If they are horee Indians, they could leave their ponies in that big cottonwood grove up there, and oiieep down by the edge of the cree-k eaey ae winking. IIP-t-0 smeak over that w-ay, and lie oowu on the bank, quiet as cats." In those days we had no magazine guns, I bnt coach of the boys, like the rest of us. "ied a muzzle-loading riite and a Colt's revolver; and now, while each of the sentries supposed them to be at the other posie, they .stole softly to tiic river, laid themselves flat on tbe bank. and peered over ita edge-, intently wa-tching and Listening. Though the nearly-exhausted moon some- TN-hat lighted up the narrow ribbon of waAer, everything immediately be Low the bank was in deep shade, and for thirty minutes or tn the alert youths could neither eee nor hear anything suspicious. Then WalW silently I pressed his comrade's arm, and both dimly saw, in the shadowless darkness, one-two- three—number leas stooping warriors flitting in gmgle file, noiHele8Bly a& eo many ghosts, aJong the dry, black mud of the rarer's maj-gin. The young fellows might easily have got away unobserved, and alarmed the camp at I their leisure, but such an ide-a never entered their heads. Here at last was a chance for glory, and no amount off danger could have induced them to miee it. 80, when the fore- most hravetj of the phantom-Like Llme had oome within twenty yards, both, as if governed by a single impulse, levelled their rifles, and, though accurate aim was impos- sible, fired. Then each, as rapidly as he could draw back hammer and pull trigger, emptied the six chambers of his revolver in the same direction, and, oe was afterwards found, not entirely without effect. For a momenit or two the astounded savages remained motionless, doubtless believing that they had been assailed by at least a dozen enemies. Then, as their extended line doubled up and closed around the leaders, the whole crowd, numbering a half hundred, broke with appalling cries over the back. and gave chase to the rash boys. But th, thoroughly trained by school racing, could 'have out-speeded the fleetest of their pursuers even with a square start; so now, as they ran like young deer campward, the howling crew never once got within arrow-shot. Meantime, the firing had alarmed the sen- tinels, who, rushing into the corral, instantly aroused its inmates, and when the panting youths reached the entrance, 34 rifles were ready to welcome the yet distant Redskins, for even the two frightened woman bad armed themselves, and both were fairly good shots. It was now three o'clock in the morning of the long June day. Already, lance-like shafts of light, appearing in the eastern sky, outshone the moon's feeble rays, and realis- ing that all hope of a surprise was past, the oncoming band halted at what its members, doubtless, thought the safe distance of 400 yards. But there were marksmen in our party who. provided with special rifles, thought nothing of plumping a turkey at 440 yards. Calling on each one of these by name, the guide directed them to try their skill on the still obscurely seen Apaohes. Accordingly, every man elevated his back sight, and took as careful an aim as possible. The five reports rang out es one, and four of the too credulous bmveg dropped in tbeir tracks, while the others, yelling in frantic rage. fled precipitately to the oottonwood grove. I guess that settJee the business," observed one of us. Vayhe," dryly replied Dave Ingram, "but I shouldn't wonder if there's a big lot of the red cusaee. with their ponies, in that neck of timber. They'll beiioppin', crazy mad: at the wipin' ottt of them warriors, an'. likely as not. ttxyTI be foots enough to swoop down on the camp. Well, if that caper pleases them it wm't him us. for we kin stand off 500 of ■rah rpvtLIm ?thomt tmmiw & tM?r ? BM-t?ttU ba.. b. qu, could be seen in or about the grove. and some of us began to prepare breakfast, while others would have led the horses and mules out to pasture had not the veteran guide inter- posed, Don't be in a hurry with the cattle, boys," he said. I ain't by no means sartin that the reds has obsquatulated yit. Anyhow, we'd best take it easy till we see what turns up." The last word was barely uttered when, from a hundred points of the wooded patch, suddenly emerged as many war-painted mounted Indians, some few. as we could see in the now broadened daylight, armed with. smooth-bore flintlock guns, in addition to the lances, bows and arrows, tomahawks, and, knives carried by all. ThtLucier exclaimed Ingram, "the pesky critters is goin' to make a fight of it, sure! Say (addressing one of us;, try your target, rifle on that big feller with the feather head- dress. He's tip-top chief. I reckon." In nowise loth to exhibit the power of bia pet gun., the young man rested its muzzle on the rim of a waggon wheel, and, after squint- ing for a. moment through the still further elevated back globe eight, touched the trigger. The distance was quite six hundred yards, but the experienced rifleman had gauged it accu- rately. The bullet, necessarily describing a great parabola in its flight, descended exactly as designed, and the bedizened savage, throw- ing up bis arms with a yell that might have been heard a mile, toppled, heart-pierced, from his pony. Now, indeed. all the furies of hell seemed loosed upon the plain. With demoniacally- resounding war-whoops, the vengeful nomads, spreading out wider and wider as they lashed their ponies to topmost speed, dashed down tu within two hundred yards of us; then t-he wings of their line swept around until our camp was completely encircled, when the whole force recklessly charged upon all sides at once, only to find every point guarded. The guide had instructed us not to waste a single shot; hence we reserved our fire until the feebly-thrown round bullets of the smooth-bores, and even a few arrows, began to hurtle through the canvas wagon covers. Then Dave's Now, men'" was followed by the crack of nine rifles from each face of the square (the two boys were in it thie time), and a score or more of riderless ponies, heir 7 roo trained, stood with drooping heads over the prostrate forms of their late masters. Wrought to a pitch of unreasoning fury, and only for a moment dismayed by the carnage, the seventy-five or eighty survivors, imagining that we we-e now defenceless, cam on again with redoubled impetuosity. But they hadn't reckoned o the reyolyers' While a. cloud of arrows, fired in full career, whistled around and among us, the "shoot-ali-day little guns" began to yet in their work; the screeching Bedskins fell fast for a few seconds, and then, overawed by the mystery of the continuous shooting, broke awliy and skurriea off toward the mountains. In a quarter of a minute all our weapons were re-loaded, and on taking stock of damages, we found that three of the horses had been killed outright, and four of our- selves slightly scratched by arrows. But our troubles were not yet over; and onoe mor& it was to the sharp-witted boys we owed timely warning—warning of a danger against which our puny weapons would avail as little as would a fisherman's net "gainst the mighty rush of an incoming ocean tide. Nearly a half-hour had elapsed since the final disappearance of our savage foes, ar.* we were busily engaged on the delayed breakfast, when tJ_e lads, who had hurried through theirs, crept out under the wagons on the east side of the corral, with the very- natural desire of gathering up some memen- toes of their first battle. The sights encoun- tered there proved so gruesome, however, that they were about to retrace their steps, wbn something low down on the eastern horizon caught Hugh's eye. 'What's that, Walt?" he wonderingly aeked. "Why," replied the other, "it looks like big army coming along in a oloud of dust. See' it stretches out for miles at each end. Let's go in and teU MI. Ingram." ,ADà nexu moment the young fallows had nuuLe thQir startJing report. I b One glance at the f ast-approaching army was enoosiL—ftp Uie. guide. Bays." lio excitedly shouted. hitch up quick as light- ning and make for the timber! That's tho biggest stampede of buffaloes I've ever aeett in my life, and we're right in track! If Ite can't get to that piece of bush 'fore they come up every man of us, and every beast, too. will be trampled into everlastin' mush. The critters won't turn aside for no dozen corrals. Nothin' but solid timber or rocks kin split a crowd like that." No second ootmrnand was needed. A dnli. hoarse roar, like the rambling of distant thunder, could now be plainly heard, and the ominous, whirling cloud of dust came every intJbant nearer and nearer. All hands worked for dear life, and in an incredibly short space of time we were in full flight, eight of the remaining nine horses having been harnessed up with tie twenty-four mules, thus giving four draft beasts to each wagon. "We'll make it slick enough." cheerily observed Ingram, as the horses and mules, intuitively aware of their own danger. streched out in a furious gallop, while the eta-unch wagons flew over the level plain as fast as a charging field battery. The wood wae albourt ten acres in extent, of triangular shape, one of its wedge-like ooroemi pointing due east, and its base abutting upon the river. In less than two minutes we had reached its south side, and threaded our way betmeen the giant cotton wood poles for some little distance. Then we turned to gaze upon a sight the like of which will never again be seen by living man-a. sight so grandly ter- rible that now. after a Lapse of forty-five years, it is not infrequently reproduced in. my nightly dreams. Incal callable as the eaatda of the sea in. number, extending north, south, and east beyond the limit of our vision, and swakinc as with earthquake tremors the ground upon which we stood, canip- the mighty phalanx of maddened buffalo. Tossing, tearing, plunging blindly onward, with u veirht and momentum before which the serried rauU. of « disciplined army would have D crushed into n<►tliir.it- ness. the rushing beasle presented a spectacle of such awtfttj resistless power that, in oon- templasting it. we pigmy mortals fete our- selves as insaenifioant a& eo many prase- hoppers. We bad not long to gaze, 1 However. Thirty seconds after we had taken shelter, the heav- ing mass of great shaggy bulls in the centre van of the advancing columns came to the apex of the timbered triangle; but, such was the enormous pressure from behind, they could. neither stop nor turn. Henoe no less than thirteen of the huge beasts were forced head- long against tree trunks and killed on tiie spot, whatever life might have been left in their stunned, forms being t-rainpled on by their rearward companions, before the latter, ever pressed onward by others, ooold swerws aside. But now a narrow, gradually widening- gap appeared in the cenare; and forcibly com- pacting its dense masses to right and left. the wondrous herd divided, swept with a cyoione- like roar along either side of the wood, into and across the shallow river, and so away over the western plain, until the wild, stam- peding craze should wear itself out. Eow far to the north or south this, prodigious body of buffalo extended we could not judge; but its depth from west. to east must have been at least two miles, for one of our men, who carried a watch, had tlfe presence of mind to time it. and found that it occupied a fraction more than ten minutes in passing as, while the guide estimated its speed twelve miles aa hour. That part of the hitherto green plain over which the myriad hoote had passed now looked like an immense duxst-covered field. Not a blade of grass nor the tiniest ghrul) remained —aU bad been ground to powder. And, M! for the gallant. boys' war trophies. When we returned to the battle ground not a. vestige of the oWn warriors or their weapons could be found. Flesh and bones, iron, wood. and flirat- were eo thoroughly incorporated with the pulverised soil tbat no recognisable fragment of any oould be discovered. The riderless ponies had, however, been swept away in the general retreat of the vanqraiahed Indians. [The Ðnd..]
