[By Special Arrangement.—Copyright.] THE CRIMSON ROSES. By ALETHEA PHILLIPS, Autihor of Romance of the Revolution," Piootin." &c., Ac. It was an event. There were no less than two strangers that Sunday morning in Middlebrook Chapel. Stray visitors had never before been known to enter this building, perched uncompro- misingly on a potato slope as if to make a virtue of its ugliness, and the minister paused just one moment before giving out the subject of his discourse. That pause proved fateful, for the young man's eyes fell, for the first time, on an up-tilted face which seemed like some dazzling vision sent to lure him from single-minded attention to his duties. He looked away directly, but the picture was stamped into his brain. She was dressed in white, with a bunch of crimson roses glowing on her breast. Her beauty shone like the emanation of a soul amid those rows of prosaic faces, and his own quickened beneath its subtle influence until he found words pouring from his lips with unaccustomed force and eloquence. He had the true gift which had slumbered under repression hitherto, but the half- critical glance uplifted to his own from the seat beneath seemed to draw out all that was in him, good, sincere, or even intolerant. There were no half-measures in his preach- ing; he condemned with wrathful invective, and the subject was evidently congenial to his nature, for it turned upon the vain pleasures of this world, chiefly embodied in any form of theatrical amusement. This was more especially intended for his youthful hearers, some of whom had been known to visit a travelling performance, and to lay themselves open to the snares of Satan by so doing, for the performers themselves were a lost, ungodly set of persons. The preacher's voice was flexible. It rolled over the heads of the offenders, while paint- ing lurid scenes that await those who select the path of destruction, and sank to suppliant sweetness while bidding them draw back in time. The spare figure was fired with energy whether denouncing or exhorting. It swayed with the inspiration which lighted up the minister's features, and made his somewhat plain face interesting. When the service was over he came down from his pulpit with a dazed look in his grey eyes to exchange the usual greeting with his flock. The strangers had disappeared, and in spite of himself a pang of disappointment shot through Mr. Newberry, though he did his best to stifle it as evidence of the evil one. What had he to do with fair faces or worldly appro- bation? Nothing. His path lay among the poor and humble. Even those maidens of his congregation who smiled demurely in his direction were not to be encouraged, though from among them he should one day select a helpmeet. Still the crimson roses were ever before him. Their fragrance seemed to fill the summer air as he stepped into it and hastened down the slope, dimly aware that he Lad left some portion of his former eelf behind. All at once he came upon two figures linger- ing in the sunshine between wind-rows cf half-made hay, and one of them, disengaging herself from her companion with a sort of wilfulncss, eame towards him. Will you allow me to say how very much I was struck with your eloquent discourse this morning, Mr. Newberry?" she said, and the voice of the woman was as bewildering music in his ears. He stood there, awkwardly confronting her; conscious of his own unoouth asceticism be- fore this grace of figure and fcttire. Why do you flatter me?" he asked abruptly, trying to break through the spell her presence wove about him. You mistake me. There is no flattery intended. One does not often hear true elo- quence—that gift divine." If the words were well spoken, they were none of mine, who am but a poor instrument in the handd of the Lord." "Yes, yes," she answered quickly; "still it is a great deal to have this power of cloth- ing your thoughts in picturesque language, and at the same time to be able to bring them home to people's hearts by an inspired delivery." "Did I do that? Ah, perhaps, I was carried out of myself." The flush of enthusiasm on her face was reflected in his own like a gleam upon some chilly lake. Then in a lower tone he added, "Did I move you?" It was just the slightest stress in the world, but the woman's mouth curved and her eyes danced beneath the shade of their lashes. "Yes. They moved me to anger. You are a powerful preacher, too good for this small place, but your views are warped by-by ignorance." "Madeline," cried her companion across the sunny field. "Yes. I am coming. Forgive me, Mr. New- berry. It's a great thing to be earnest now- adays, only remember—' judge not that ye be not judged.' She held out her hand. The light struck sharply on its whiteness and the dazzle of rings. His eyes travelled from them to the crimson roses, and then, as if drawn irre- sistibly upwards, to her face. They gazed silently at each other. It was the attraction of youth to youth, of the man to the woman; and he could no more resist that smile than he could make himself old before his time. "We have taken the gabled cottage at the end of the village for the summer, Mr. New- berry," she said, slowly. "I shall come to hear you preach again. Good-bye." He walked home like a man in a dream. And this was the beginning of it all, for the acquaintance soon ripened into a blind passion on the one side and an amused tole- ration on .the other. There were moments, indeed, when the minister struggled against this infatuation for a woman of whose history he knew nothing, and who belonged to another world than his own. Sometimes she dropped mys- terious hints about herself, laughing to find how his curiosity was baffled. I am here to rest my nerves. I have been overworked." she remarked one evening in a languid tone, when he had just been thanking her for some good action in the village. Do you visit much among the poor-at home?" he ventured to inquire, wondering what work she referred to. "I-go slumming? Oh, dear no. I loathe the sight of poverty, but I give to charities, you know." Here yon give words and smiles." Yes, and there they have to pay for them." She laughed in her brilliant way, but her face seemed older, as if already haggard with experience. He went away maddened by her strange fascination. At last the summer months began to wane, and when Madeline Ray told him that she and her cousin would soon flit, like the swallows, from beneath the gabled roof, and gave a little sigh in the telling—then he could contain himself no longer. He felt that this fair woman held his soul in her hands to raise or to destroy for ever. Words came to him suddenly as they had come to him in the chapel that first morning. He painted his pamian with power; the very bea.rt of the man seemed torn from him in the utterance while he pleaded with her to become his wife, to throw aside everything but love. What T. Madeline Ray? You know not to whom you offer this honour." A little mocking laugh rang in his ears like an echo from the Pit of Destruction. Ah, I will give myself up to worldly advancement for your sake." he gasped, beat- ing conscience down. and inwardly sick with loathing of himself. For my sake—mine?" My life is in your hands to make or mar. Madeline, Madeline—in Heaven's name, what are you, fiend or angel?" Her eyes dilated. They glowed into his own with a mingling of pride and scorn as she answered in her perfectly modulated tone*: I am Madeline Ray—the actress:" Six months later, a piece which had taken much study and preparation was to be presented at the Star Theatre. The name of Madeline Ray was in every mouth of the crowds collected at the doors. Her inter- pretation of a new part always roused the keenest interest in the theatre-going public, and tales of the actress in private life were buzzed about, some of them containing that grain of truth from which springs a harvest of lies. Her portraits were familiar to the loungers round photograph-shop windows, and only that day a man in shabby black shivered as he beard how freely her beauty was criticised. The same individual was the first to arrive at the pit entrance. People eyed this odd figure askanoe, as he stood there clutching his silver coin, when the rain, dripped on his thin shoulders. His patience was rewarded by the very centre seat in the front row of the proscenium, where he sat staring fixedly at the curtain. The new play was a great success, and never had Madeline Ray acted with more power nor looked more bewitching. The man in the pit followed every movement with his sunken eyes, and the interest depicted in hia emaciated countenance would have been far more terrible to witness than the mock tragedy on the boards had anyone had eyea to see it. Only, when the actress stood. flushed with triumph, bowing her acknowledgments at the end of the play, in a perfect shower of wreaths and bouquets, the man sprang to his feet with a frenzied cry: Madeline!" It rang through the applause like a throb of pain, and hushed it. People forgot the actress. They saw a man and a vroman- between them the blinding glare of foot- lights. Then a bunch of crimson roses waa flung against her breast. She put up both hands and caught them there, while the shattered petals fell slowly, like drops of blood, down the front of her white dress. With a groan the man fell back into his seat. It seemed as if he had torn his very heart from his bosom, for the fingers of the beautiful actress to crush out the life. The theatre empfled, but he remained sitting there while a doctor was summoned. Strong currents of air blew across and flapped the curtain to and fro. The seats, shrouded in holland coverings, were like ghosts, waiting in grim expectation of the vanished scene. A stale, sickly odour pervaded the place, while a single shaft of light accentuated the vault- like blackness all around. Madeline Ray shivered in her furs as she glided between the empty benches with the doctor. "Starvation and heart disease." was his rer* diet. "Poor fellow, did you know him?" For all answer she flung herself beside the dead man, and passionately kissed his hand. His chin had dropped, and his eyes stared fixedly at the stage, but both woman and actress might appeal to him in vain, for Death had wrapped him in a more potent spell. [The End.]

I FORTUNE'S FREAKS.
I FORTUNE'S FREAKS. A remarkable case of a fortune misse4 through its existence being unsuspected has j just occurred at Arbois, in Belgium. A pork butcher named Bidaine in 1870 purchased two French military saddles after the rout of Sedan forced a number of French soldiers over the Belgium frontier. It was not clear that M. Bidaine ever made much use of the saddles, but he kept them. and at his death > recently they were pointed out to M. Sibe- nater, director of the Provincial Museum, as objects of historic interest." Proceeding to examine them after purchase," the director found in a closely-strapped saddle pocket 85 old French banknotes of one thousand francs, or forty pounds each-evidently the property of some bachelor trooper or officer whose fate hae lain for thirty-two years in oblivion. As for poor Bidaine. he died rather poor, with over three thousand pounds within reach of his hand daily for the last half of his life.
