[By Special Arrangement.—Copyright.] THE WIDOW'S DECISION, I By CLARA J. DENTON. Going to get ma said Mrs. Springer, l as she slowly waved her palm-leaf fan, aod critically surveyed her visitor. The short rotundity thus addressed, and known far and wide as Mrs. Narif, was arrayed in unwonted splendour, and with an affecta- tion of youth that astonished the more sen- sible Mrs. Springer. Mrs. Narifs flabby and wrinkled face blushed 80 deeply at her friend's pointed question that the glow was visible even through the generous coating of pearl- powder. There was, however, no reply, unless the blush and the self-conscious smile that followed could be so characterised- Mrs. Springer waved her palm-leaf fan more rapidly, still scajining the haJf-averted faoe. "Anybody I know?" she ventured. The other woman, with a ooy glanoe, and a tantalising smile, said: You've heard of him, of course? Why don't you tell me all about it? You know you're dying to." said Mrs. Springer, with blunt friendliness. "I thought maybe you wonldct care to hear about it," simpered the other, looking down, and playing with the lace on her dress. "It's Mr. FVeeman." "Mr. Freeman!" ejaculated the hostess, in her astonishment nearly dropping the palm- leaf fan. She gazed at her visi-tor a few moments in silence, and then asked stiffly: "How long have you been engaged, Mrs. Narif?" "Oh, you do ask such sharp questions, Mre. Springer," said Mrs. Narif. with another blush, "but I aint engaged yet," with a marked emphasis on the terminal word. "Then," returned Mrs. Stringer, decidedly. "I can tell you this much, you never will be. That Henry Freeman is a queer Old fish, and if he's gone far enough to make you think of marrying him, and yet hasn't made any pro- mises, he never will make any." "I guess he's an honourable gentleman, said Mrs. Narif. bridling. Mrs. Springer made a gesture of disgust. "Umph! don't you know there's lots of men who wouldn't cheat nor lie, nor steal, and yet wouldn't think no more of making a woman think they're in love with her than they wou.d of eating their dinner?" (Grammar was not Mrs. Springer's strong point). "Land o' Liberty, I should think yo^'d know that by this time. You'd oagnter know a sight more about men than I do anyway, seeing that you've had three of 'em, and I hain't never had but one." "But the men I've lived with wasn't like thai," said Hrc. Narii, parsing her thin iiys. "They never in all their lives said a word that they didn't mean." "Umph!" said Mrs. Springer, with an ex- pressive sniff. I'm awful sorry they didn't stay on this green earth till I set my eyes on 'em, they'd been quite a sight." "Well, they was good men, every one of 'em," returned Mrs. Narif, with a sigh, and a reminiscent east of countenance. ""Qh! of course, all "dead "husbands are model husbands! but, then, I do hope for your sake that Mr. Freeman does mean all he sayB to you. My' that would be a fine thing for you, and no mistake. That's a splendid residenoe; and then, too, think of having tuat big dry- goods store to run to; what a chance for new dresses. Besides, he ain't a bad-looking old fellow if he is most seventy; but do tell me, won't you, what he has said?" I do'no' as there's so very much to tell; guess it's mostly looks after all," replied Mrs. Narif. hesitatingly. "-Now, liartiha Na-rif, don't you know no better at your age than to build on a mail's looks? Why looks is a great sight cheaper'n words even. How oft.,en does he come to see you?" Mrs. Narif moved uneasily in her chair. "Truth is, he ain't ever come at all, but he keeps saying he's coming just's soon's his hurry's over. It's a good way out to my house, you know," she added apologetically. Mrs. Springer stopped waving her fan and sat erect in her chair. "Says he's coming," she repeated scornfully. "See here, Martha Narif, a.in't you smart enough to know that when a man is in dead earnest after a woman he doesn't do much, saying about coming to see her, he just gets right up and comes; and as to your living out of town. what is that to Henry Freeman who drives thai, daady team of his ten miles or more every day of his life. He's just hav- ing a little fun out of you, and laughing in his sleeve all the while. It's funny men never get old enough to behave themselves. So now let me tell you, if waiting for his visit is what's kept you from going to your eon's in Podunk, you'd better not wait any longer." "It don't seem's if I could bear to go until he comes to call on me once, anyway," said Mrs. Narif, pathetically. "Well, mark my words, if you wait for that you'll never see Podunk again." "I don't see how you can be so sure of that," igaid Mrs. Narif, with a faint show of anger; "but then you're a regular man-hater, anyway, and, of course, you can't be fair to Mr. Freeman. "No, I ain't a man-hater; you're dead wrong there. I like decent men well enough in their places, and I know just's well's any- body what handy things they are to have around a house, but I ain't so fond of them that I can t see through their performances. Dear me, but wouldn't I just like to give Henry Freeman a piece of my mind." "Oh!" exclaimed Mrs. Narif, her fa-ce grow- ing white with a sudden fear, "do you know him to speak to?" Know him to speak to," repeated Mrs. Springer, with a rippling laagh, well, I guess I do. But you needn't be afraid. I'll not give you away. I ain't as mean as that, I hope. But, now, just to open your eyes a little, I'll tell you something I ain't never told before to anybody. About two months after my hus- band disappeared, Henry Freemtn came in to see me one evening. He said a good manj nice things, in that awful sweet way of his, and then asked me if he might come up and see me whenever he liked. I said, right up and down, -No, "Mr. Freeman, you can't. 1 ain't a widow, as I know of, and until I hear that my husband is dead, or he writes to me that he ain't ever coming back any more, no man can come to see me even as a friend. Such has always been, and always will be, my sentiments.' So he didn't stay much longer, and he ain't ever troubled me since." There was a dead silence after this confes- sion, but presently Mrs Narif asked anxiously, Do you s'pose you'll ever know anything certain about him?" Mrs. Springer held up the palm-leaf fan, to hide the queer little smile that crept around her very pretty mouth, but she made no reply. "He's been gone two years now, ain't he?" was the next query, somewhat timidly put. Mrs. Springer nodded, and after a moment's silence she waved her fan to and fro again, and aaked with a friendly intonation: But where do you see Mr. Freeman if he doesn't visit ycoup,, O, you ijuow 1*0 alwaw& d'ane mi K fat his store. You ought to see how glad he always is to meet me. He just beams all over his faoe. He comes the whole length of the store to shake hands with me. and stands talking sometimes half an hour with me. and he always says he's coming right. up to see me in a day or -two. The last time I was there (yesterday) lie held my hand a long time when I said good-bye, and he whispered to me. Now, my dear Mrs. Narif (he says dear so beautifully). do come in real often, and make yourself right at home when you're here. and if th& clerks don't wait on you flying, just tell me, and I'll bounce em'; them's his words. "The old hypocrite; he knows you've got a thousand hard dollars to spend every year. and he means to have his share of them. that's all." "0, dear! do you reaJly think 80, Mrs. Springer? I did calk'late to go in there to- day after some thread and hair-pins, but if I thought he was like that I'd get them at Smith's. But do tell me. Mrs. Springer, is be after any other woman?" I don't know of any, but I do know of A doaen or two that are after him." "Are they better looking than me?" she asked, with all the pathos of a faded but onoe acknowledged beauty. "Tiney're younger," was Mrs. Opringeee significant answer. "Does he go to see them?" persisted tho widow. "You see," she continued plain- tively, "you are right here in the where you know all the goings on." "I don't know much about Mr. Freeman's goings on." returned the other ooldly; "bat I ain't heard of his going to see anyone. Most likely he tells the others, too, that he's coming,' and squeezes their hands, and smiles on them just enough to draw them into his ■stone and get their loose oazh." she a4decL sternly. Mrs. Narif was silent. She was looking at her hostess furtively and thinking. "She's good-iooking, and under forty, and she seems to he the only one he's taken the trouble to visit; but I just believe that shift- less husband of hers is living, and will come walking in some fine morning." As a result of her irheditatron. she said aloud: "I don't see, then, but what my chance it just as good as anybody's." "Yes, so it is," said Mrs. Springer, this time not hiding her smile behind her fan, "jast oxactly 's good's anybody's; bat what on earth do you wand of a husband, anyway? You've got lots of money, and are enough ,CO'ight better off without a man to boss yon around, even if he is a pretty nice one, like uld Freeman." "Kinder lonesome thougfc," said the widow, with a sigh. Mrs. Springer's faoe clouded. "So it is," she assented. She leaned back in her chair and looked out of the window on the dusty village street, over which the hot August son was stream- ing. "There comes a telegraph boy," she said, sodden!y; "guess the Smiths next door axe going to get word that their rich old tmcle is dead. They've been expecting to hear of it for a month. My lord! she exclaimed, jumping up, "if he isn't turning in here. What on earth would telegraph to me?" She caught up her purse and met the boy as the threshold. "There's one comfort," she continued, as øhe took the book to sign her name. "I ain't got any folks outside of this town, 'cepting some cousins; and they wouldn't telegraph, if they' all died." "Course not. H'Said the widow, gravely prac- tical; "how could they? But why don't yow open the envelope." "I'm going to," returned Mrs. Springer, and. taking a pin from her hair with great delifce* ration, she carefully openad the end of tbd yellow envelope. But. as she slowly deciphered the scrawling1 chirography, her face grew white, the message fluttered to the floor, and she leaned help. lessly against the door-post. Her friend sprang forward, caught her by the arm, and began to fan her vigorously. "No, no," she whispered, "don't be scairt. I ain't the fainting kind," and she took a few steps to the couch near by. "Don't use up your strength fanning me, but read that tele- gram. Mrs. Narif picked up the bit of yellow paper- and read these words:- "Maniton, August IB.—Mrs. Leander Springer. —Husband died here to-day. Remains sent to you at his request. Plenty of money. Will write.—John Smith, M.D." Mrs. Narif rolled herself unceremoniously into tlse nearest cha-ir. She held the telegram in a tight grasp, and looked at her hostess, who, dry-eyed, seemed gazing irrto the past. "I don't believe I need that thread and hair- pins to-day." she thooght. "Is there anything I can do for YOlO?" ilia asked, at last. The newly-made widow roused herself, and sat erect. "I d'know as there is. Dutch Ann iF here to-day, cleaning, and I'll send her orer for my brother's folks. Just s much obliged, though. "WelL I guess I'll go, then. It's getting late, and the pony's been hitched up a goott, while. Good-bye. I'm awful sorry for you," and she bent to impress a thin-lipped kiss, on her friend's cheek. "If there's anything A ean do for you, let me know, and I'll coma right in." "Thank you," was the calm reply. "IH left you know if I need YOll." and the next moment she was alone. Mrs. Narif unhitched the bay pony with un- usual celerity, and, as she climbed into the, buggy, she was thinking. "I'll pack my trunk this very night, and 1'11 go to Podunk to-morrow." And she went. THE END.
