[By Special Arrangement.—Copyright.] HIS MOTHER'S BISCUIT, By STERLING KANE, I earn the money, and think I'm entitled to hase things as I like them," he said at breaMaet. I've instructed Sarah to bake some of the biscuit brown for you, Reuben. If they don't suit you I ca.n t help it. I shall not spring out of bed every morning to stand guard over SaraJi and the oven, and you know I understand very little about cooking." He tosged a biscuit across the table to her and said. There, look at that! That's a pretty thing for a man to eat, isn't it? My mother wouldn't let such a thing as that come on her table! My father never had to go to business with half-baked lumps of dough in his stomach! Mother knew her business, and attended to it!" Your mother's coming to visit us, Eeuben. Perhaps shell make and bake the biscuit for you while she's here." She can So it, madam! She can make the finest biscuit on earth! Hope you 11 learn while you've got the chance! There'6 a good many thftigs she can teach you if you're willing to learn! I'm perfectly willing to learn. I confess there are many things my mother did not teach me; she haa said herself that she was always too busy instructing us in higher things, such aa good principles, good man- ners, and consideration for others, to find much time for kitchen education." Well, my mother aid both. and did them well, too! I'm glad she's coming here." Pansy controlled the resentment Reuben's words stirred, and said, quietly, "Your mother must be a very remarkable woman." That's just what she is, and I shall feel uneasy all the time she's here for fear things won't go right." Did you not tell me that she was a lovely character—patient and amiable, Reuben?" Yes. She's a model in everything-" I don't see how you could leave so many lovely traits—in addition to her good biscuit-for such a wife as you got. I'm afraid, though, if she could see your beha- viour when things do not suit you she would regret not putting more work on you and less on your biscuit. I beg of you, when she comes, don't, by treating me as you've done this morning, put her to the blush over her failure in training you. If you do I shall feel sorrier for her than I do for myself. A son's actions reflect his mother's character many times, remember." Well!" gasped Reuben, fixing a rebuking gaze on Pansy; well, that beats all! A man can't speak a word of praise of his dear old mother without his wife must up and take it as a personal insult' I'll hate for her to find out on her first visit that I've married a Tartar, who won't allow me even to mention her name! Do try, Pansy, and keep things pleasant before her. for heaven's sake!" I can't stand any more, Reuben. I'm too hurt and insulted for anything! and, with- out having tasted a mouthful of breakfast. Pansy roee quietly from the table and went to her room in tears. He looked after her, smiled, and shook his head. "Well, upon my word, won't allow me to praise my own mother's biscuit!" Mrs. Rodd, Reuben's mother, arrived that evening. She was a gentie-faced. kindljT-man- nered woman of sixty, who did not appear as if she should regard a son's wife with anta- gonism-a. piece of feminine imperfection which she must immediately proceed to make over. Complaining of weariness after her journey, Pansy served Mrs. Bodd with a dainty tea in her room. Why. dear, how thoughtful, and what a sweet little woman you are! You don't know half how grateful I am for dear Reuby's good fortune in getting such a wife!" Pansy's heart throbbed with joy. She was won, and felt safe—still more so when the dear, good soul continued: "I know, dear, from the loofes of things that you're a good housekeeper. I can tell at a glance." As they were alone. Pansy dared to say, "Bat, mother, dear, do what I will, I cannot please Reuben in the cooking!" Batting Pansy tenderly on the cheek, the mother-in-law said with a gentle smile, "Well, well, child, that's notihing! All men are that way at first--disposed to grumble and imagine that the little wife's way isn't quite as good as the old mother's. Why, honey. Beuren's fa,ther was just the same way! He nearly broke my young heart, finding fanl-t with everything I did, but he wore himself oot I grumbling, and then he quit." This sympathy dispelled Pansy's nervous- ness about the entertainment of Reuben's mother. She retired and slept soundly until it was time to see to those everlasting biscuits the next morning. She wished she had not ordered biscuit for breakfast—trouble might ensue. Reuben was aU smiles when his mother entered the breakfast-room, and played his part with proper pride. "Pretty nice little home we've got here, isn't it, Mudzie? And what d'ye think of that girl of mine?" Pansy was out looting after the biecuit. "Isn't she a jewel?" "Indeed she is! I don't know, son, how you were ever so lucky as to get her! Just see how neai everything looks! You know I was never much of a housekeeper, and-" Pansy entered, and the three sat down to breakfast. "Oh, dean what a beautiful biscuit, child I said Mrs. Rodd. "Why, you must have an excellent cook! I'm 90 fond of biscuit when they are good. and. strange to tell, I never could make good biscuit. Reuben's father always found fault with our biscuit. You see, I didn't have muc-h knack about cooking, and poor William, that's Eeuben's pa, you know, used to be always telling me of the good things his mother made. At first it made me miserable, and I nearly fretted my young life out trying to please him, till one day when old Aunt Crissy, that's William's old-maid sister, got to talking of their mother; she told me she was a fine woman in many things, but didn't know a thing about cooking. So after that I took things easier, though I got so after a few years I could cook a tolerable meal in an emergency. But I never could learn to make biscuit. Poor William couldn't under- stand it. The first I ever attempted he made such fun of them it came near parting us. We were foolish children then, you know, and gave way to ugly temper over every little thing." Seeing how deeply Pansy was interested, the old lady continued: I never shall forget how William tossed one of thoae dried up little biscuits across the tabie to me and said: My mother wouldn't let a. bit like that come on tbe table! Pansy, thrilling with triumph, exciaimed, Oh, how unkind when you had done your best!" Yes. ohild, but I cjjdn't speak ba/Gk; that's never a good plan between young married people: and William was ashamed of it before the day passed. He was a different man before be died. The very last time 1 attempted to make biscuit, and felt so morti&ed when they came to the ta?e, he said, in thai kind Ww of his. Ne?er mind'l dMf ?d wüer! _Te done eomethmg a??r than making biscuits; you ve mace a man out of me, and you've made me happy,' and then he aidded, with a mischievous twinkle, 'and best of all you've made me walk a chalk, and I love you for it.' At this point Pansy offered a plate of hot biscuits to MrE, Rodd, who exclaimed, "Why, I do declare! I will have to take another, they're so nice, and this is my fourth." Reuben spoke for the first time: "Mother. don't you think all women should know how to cook? Isn't it their business to see to everything about the house?" "Oh, yes, son; but then a young house- keeper can't learn everything at onoe you know. Now you see you are a clerk: could you take hoW of the entire business of the firm and carry it on successfully from the first? Everybody has to learn by degrees, and it isn't every young man that is lucky enough to get such a wife as our little Pansy here, who seexas to know all these things withont having to wait for experience." "Oh, you will spoil me, mother, if you praise me so." "Oh, no, child; praise is helpful to people, I've found. Nothing ie so discouraging and dispiriting as hearing those about you find fault when ycuve tried to please them. I talked to Renby a.bout all this before he mar- ried you, child—told him how much better you'd get on if he'd praise all your little efforts to please him, and I know he hasn't forgotten his old mother's advice, have you. Reuby? But what's the matter, son? You don't seem to be enjoying these nice biscuit* as I do; I suppose, though, you re nsed to them." Reuben said he had a pressing engagement, and was hurrying to get to his office. He left the house feeling as guilty as the dog who robs the fold of its fairest lamb. Weil, be had done worse, and he knew it. He had robbed a loving young wife of happiness. He folt glum all day. A man who offends is generally surly. But contrition followed. Locking the door of their room that night Reuben threw his arms passionately around Pansy, and, seating her on his lap. placed in her hand a little box holding a lovely ring. Isn't that pretty, sweetheart? See if it wiU fit your finger." Oh, beautifully," Pansy exclaimed, putting it on. Now, look me in the eyes, sweetheart, if ever I gay another word to you about my _.1_ "I muuier s coojiing, ner oiscint especially, just you get up and throw that ring in my face and call me brute, d'ye hear? It does a man good to get such a squelching as I got this morning." The next morning at breakfast Pansy seemed supremely happy. Reuben was in the jolliest humour, and, when Mother Rodd was shown the new emerald-and-diamond ring Oil Pansy's finger, she lookea into both faoes and said, "Another token of Reuby's love, of course! Oh! how glad I am to see you so happy, and that you don't quarrel over trifles. One match was made in Heaven, I'm sure." Since that time Pansy often exclaims, I wonder why people say such ugly things about mothers-in-law? I think they are the dearest, best creatures in the world. I don't see how any home ever gets properly regu- lated without 'moth era-in-I aw.' (The End.)

ONE IDEA OF THE UNITED STATES…
ONE IDEA OF THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. An American paper says thr.t Peter Maher, the Irish pugilist, received a knock-out blow in Philadelphia, when he triea to become an American citizen. The naturalisation ques- tions proved too much fox him. Maher knew who the President of the "United States was. When he was asked. "How is the Presi- dent elected? he replied, confidently, "By a large majority." "And the Governor?" "Toe same way," said Peter. "What was the Declaration of Independence? "It had some- thing to do with the British." said Peter; "it was a kind of international challenge." "What's the Constitution?'' was asked. "It a all to the good," Peter declared, enthusiasti- cally: I'm trained up to the minute." "How many States in the United States?" was another question. "There's Pennsylvania and New York and Chicago, and oh. a bunch more." Then Peter went down and out.
"THOROUGH."
"THOROUGH." The late Sir William Allan's patriotism was of the most aggressive type. He gloried in his Scottish descent and the traditions of his country. He once told the Gateshead people that rather than be defeated he wou!d "don the kilt and buckle on the claymore"; and, speaking at another meeting, he said that if he were defeated it would not interfere with his porridge-supping propensities. Iiis works were the Scotia Works, his residence was Scotland House, and, as if that were not enough, his entrance lobby was embellished with glittering claymores, his rooms were decorated with designs of the national emblem, carved thistles ornamented his dining-room chairs, and a thistle-topped rail- ing lent novelty to the front of the house. Sir William once complained in the House of Commons that we no longer saw sturdy Highlanders in the Highland regiments. lie had just met a soldier in kilts, be explained, and had asked him, "Wbaur are ye frae?" Sir?" the man replied. "Whaur are ye frae?" repeated the member for Gateshead. Sir?" was again the questioning antwer. Then Sir William said. 'Where are you from?" "Oh, I'm from Wapping. sir!" the soldier replied. A rumour having gone abroad that it was the intention of the War Office to abolish the kilt in Highland regiments, he interro- gated Mr. Brodrick on the subject. The then Under-Secretary for War delivered what, though evasive in terms, seemed to convey an affirmative answer. "Is this, then," shouted the interrogator fiercely. "your revenge for Bannockburn ?"
