r Special Arrangement—Copyri g ht ] IAN APRIL FOOL? I By MRS. L. C. HARDY. Helen Ingram, daughter of the merchant prince, John Ingram, was holding a reception, and the stately drawing-room of the spacious mansion was a scene of gaiety and beauty. Lights gleamed, flowers bloomed, and strains of music floated out upon the air, and the merry dancers srrung down the polished floor to the strains of a bewildering waits. Beautiful Helen Ingram, clad in a gown of 6himrEiering white silk and lace, with creamy pearls clasping her rounded throat and arms, moved graciously among her guests, a tender, brooding light in her long-lashed brown eyes, and a soft flush upon her dimple cheeks. "Queen Rose in the rosebud garden of girls," Stanley Kirk whispered softly, as lie watched her from his retreat among the lace draperies 9f the window, with all the worship of an honest heart mirrored in his keen blue eyes. A moment later he spoke her name in a low tone, as she was passing on her way, and the flush deepened on her cheek, and the lashes drooped lower over the happy eyes. Handsome, broad-shouldered Stanley Kirk bent his stately blonde head over the shining dark onc. Won't you give me a little bit of this waltz, Miss Ingram? It's my fa-vourite," he said. She turned with a quick little motion and emilc, and the next moment they were twinging down the room with the other dancers. Once she glanced up into his face, but the look in the eyes bent upon her caused her own to droop, and her heart to beat tumultnooely beneath the white lace of her bodice. They paused in the shadow of a. tall paim, standing at the foot of the long room. I am going to say good night to you now, Mis3 Ingram," he said quietly, still holding her hand. Why must yotr go so soon?" she faltered. Because I cannot stay and leave unsaid what I am longing to say, and I cannot say it here and now; so I had better go. But Helen, may I write you to-morrow, and tell you all there is in my heart to s<y?" YesS, you may write," she answered eoftly. "And you will be kind to me, I pray you, for all my future life depends upon your answer. Good-night, my little love," and he was gone. He loves me-he loves me. How handsome and noble he is; a prince among men," was the song that kept singing in Helen Ingram's heart as ahe turned once more to her guests; and Stanley Kirk strode ewiftly away down the street with no room in his heart for any other thought than that of his love for beautiful Helen Ingram. They were both hard hit, there was no denying the fact, and those of their friends who saw how matters stood were wont to smile and remark what a handsome couple they would make, she the heiress of half a million, and he the confidential clerk in the great firm of Ingram and Ingram. Mr. Ingram saw with shrewd eyes how matters were drifting. He is the one man among a thousand, to whom I would be willing to give my daughter," he said to Mrs. Ingram. He is honourable, intelligent, and a gentleman; and I shall take him into the firm as junior partner next year." Yes, I am well pleased," Mra. Ingram had anBWered; "hcmour and integrity far out- weigh all considerations of wealth, and Helen will have plenty of money." The next morning Stanley Kirk eat in his office in the rear of the great dry goods palace of Ingram and Ingram, writing to Helen Ingram. It was an honest, loving letter, written from the depths of his manly heart. I love you, Helen," be said, but I have little beside my great love to offer you, as yet. I have my way to make in the world, and am willing to wait; but if you will only give me the hope that I may some day call you my wife, the best and truest love that man ever ga.ve to woman shall be yours—will always be yours whatever your aarwer may be." He folded the letter, put it into an envelope, and addressed it to Helen. At that moment the voice of Mr. Ingram, from the inner office, said, See here, Kirk, just a moment, please," and he stepped from his desk into the next room. In lialf-aai-hour he returned, picked up the letter, looked at it curiously for a moment, and thought- I don't remember sealing it. I meant to ha,we read it over. but perhaps J would better not." Then la-ughing a, little, If she should refuse you, old boy. I'm afraid it would go hard with you." He placed the letter in the box with the other mail, and calling the office boy, sent it away on its mission. Helen Ingram sat in the sunny morning- room, with a happy light in her brown eyes, and an expectant glow flusing her rosebud face. She had tried to read, but the book had fallen to the floor at her feet, and a piece of dainty needlework lay idle in her lap. It is almost time for the postman now, and I know what he will bring me," she thought, and I shall write and tell him to come this very evening for his answer." The postman came at last, and a servant placed the mail on a table in the hall. When the door had closed behind the maid, Helen stepped to the table. Yes, there was her letter in Stanley Kirk's handwriting. She ran lightly up the broad stairs to her own room, and closed the door. For a moment she stood with the letter in her baaicl with glowing eyes, and a rosy flush on her soft cheek; then smiling softly. she broke the seal, and drew forth a single slip of paper, with April Fool scrawled broadly across its face. For the first time it occurred to her that it was the first day of April, and a scarlet flame flashed over her face, and then buried itself away, leaving her cheeks white, as she gazed at the paper with surprised, indignant eyes. Oh, how could he? How could he?" she cried. It is low, ill-bred, and vulgar. I could never have believed it of Stanley Kirk." For a. long time Helen sat buried in thought, the red of the rose returned to her cheeks, and a spark of resentment glowed in the soft brown eyes. Yes, it muat be so," she said at last, with a weary sigh; "he had seen how much I love him, and has taken this way to humble me, because he is poor and I am rich. He never cared for me; but, oh! Stanley Kirk, you shall never triumph over a heart-broken weakling; my pride is still left in me, as you shall eoon see." She went to her desk, wrote a few hasty lines addressed to Stanley Kirk, dropped it into the mail box at the door, and ordered her horse for a canter in the park. That afternoon Stanley Kirk, in the privacy of his office, opened a note and read, You are. beneath my notice, never speak to me again!" And burying his white face in his hands, he thought long and earnestly. I have made a fatal mistake in thinking she could oare for me; she, the rich hairesa, would not stoop to her father's clerk, yet I felt almost sure of her love. Oh! Helen, why were you eo kind? If you could n-ot be kinder still, you might at least, have been less harsh in your refusal." Mr. Ingram, you told me yesterday yon wanted to send a man to California* to look after the business there. Oould you trust me to go?" WhT, Kirk, certainly; yon ar*. ju £ t 1M man I wanted, but I did not like to ask you. Do you wish to go?" [' Yes, if I go at once. When can I start?" To-morrow, if you like." Then looking up into the drawn white faoe, he asked, kindly, "Has anything gone wrong. Kirk?" ¡ Nothing that can be helped. I will st.aft, then, to-morrow, Mr. Ingram." Very well; but I shall miss you, Kirk." I shall try to be of use to you there, MY. Ingram," he answered, gravely. When Helen heard of his departure she mid not a word. Mr. Ingram was puzzled and a little dis- appointed, but wisely kept eilant. lis*. Ingram, was gpsatly surprised. Have you refused Stanley Eirk, Kelsa?" she asked of her daughter. No, mamma; he did not give me Q. c7iif-nosl she answered, with a bitter little smile. A little quieter, a little more thoughtful, Helen went on her way, with a great longing in her heart, a hunger for something she felt was loet to her for ever; and the only solace that came to Stanley Kirk in his lonely, barren life was found in relentless and un- ceasing toil and a feverish devotion to business, and so the year went on. • • ♦ In another weak it would be the first of April, and one day Helen received another letter. The address was scrawled a.croas the back of one of her father's business envelopes, and she looked at it curiously before breaking the seal; then she drew forth the letter written to her a year ago by Stanley Kirk. The first few words in the well-known hand- writing caught her eye, and she sat down and read the letter through with tears running down her cheeks and a ertrange feeling of rapture in her heart. Oh, Stanley, a terrible mistake has been made, and I sent you away with my cruel. heartless words. What can you have thought of me. my dear, dear love?" Helen •fcent straight to her father's office. As she passed through the outer office her eyes fell upon Johnnie Ober, the office boy, sitting at Stanley Kirk's unused desk. The boy started guiltily, flushed and paled, and then settled down, looking at Helen with frightened eyes. ilisa Ingram stopped suddenly, looked at the boy steadily a moment, a new light. beginning to dawn upon her mind. "Johnnie!" she said sternly, holding out the letter, what does this mean? Tell me the truth at once." Yes, I will, Miss Ingram," said the boy, brokenly. It was last April, and Mr. Kirk fooled me, and I couldn't get it back on him. He left the letter in his desk, and I took it out and put' April Fool' into the envelope and sealed it up, and he never knew the differenm. for he went away- next day." "But the letter, Johnnie? Yes, I put it in my pocket, and never looked at it, honest I didn't, Miss Ingram, till yesterday I found it slipped down in the lining; then I see it was for you-and-and I- I thought you ought to have it. Mr. Kirk was such a good fellow, and I only did it for a joke. Oh! please don't tell your father. Miss Ingram." The boy was crying now. "It was very wrong, Johnnie, and I must tell papa; but I promise you shall not loioe your place." Papa," she said a. moment later, I want yon to read this letter." Mr. Ingram did as requested, Helen. explained, and then they had a. little earnest talk together. That evening Stanley Kirk was greatly, surprised on receiving a telegram saying, Come home, immediately." But with no thought of disobeying the order of his chief he was that night on his way across the Continent. A week later Helen was walking reatlemly up and down th& long drawing-room, an expeotamt look upon her bright face and a tender, luminous light in the brown eyes. Has he fbrgiven my cruel words ? Will ha come to me after so long for his answer ?" she was thinking, and so absorbed was she with her thoughts that she failed to hear the door open, or a quick, firm step along the hall, till, turning, she found herself standing face to face with Stanley Kirk, a little thinner, a little paler, but with the same lovelight in his eyes as of old. She reached out both hands to him with a little cry of gladness, and he took her into his strong, loving arms. After a few moments of blissful silence, he said, I have seen your father, Helen, and he has told me all about it. I have come for my answer, dear. Is it to be another April fool for me this time, dear heart?" You have your answer and your April fool in your arms, Stanley," she answered with shining eyes. And so we leave them with the April one- shine around them a.nd the sunshine of lov. in their hearts. (The End.)

REMARKABLE FEET. By way of a great treat, little Tommy had been taken by his nurse to the Tillage smithy. It was Tommy's first glimpse at the wonders of the blacksmith's art, and he stood fasci- nated as the smith proceeded with his task of shoeing a horse. Tommy was full of the wonders of the smithy when he reached home. "Mummy," he said, "I saw the man who makes horses to-day!" "Did you, my dear?" said mamma wonderingly. "What— wooden horses?" "No, mummy," Tommy said impatiently, "great, big, live horses. I looked in his little house and saw him doing it. He had one nearly finished when I peeped in; he was just nailing on his back feet!"
