[By Special Arrangement—Copyright.] JEN KINS' DOOR-MAT, By JAMES DONALD. "Talking about inventions, did I ever tell you of Jenkins and his auto-electric door- mat?" observed George Washington Ananias, as he stretched his legs lazily towards the fire. "No, I can't say you have," I replied. "Fire a,hea,d with it now, if it is worth telling." "All right. Here goes, and G. W. A. pro- duced his pipe, and lit it carefully, whilst the listener hastily sharpened -i extra pencil to be ready in case of emergercy. There never was a fellow like Jenkins for inventing things," he began. "He simply couldn't settle unless he was postering about trying to invent some utterly impossible article, which would be of no earthly use to anyone, even if it were invented. He was rather a nervous sort of man, too, was Jenkins, with a chronic dread of house- breakers. It is not surprising, therefore. that his thoughts ran to a, great extent upon burglar alarms. The various projects for dealing with burglars which passed through his brain wouid have considerably astonished that fraternity if they had been aware of them. Fortunately, however (for the burglars), gome- thing always refused to work at the crucial point, and, consequently, they were left to earn their livelihood in comparative peace. "To quote a well-known proverb, however, Patience and perseverance conquer all diffi- culties,' and at lagt, after months of un- remitting labour, during which he had reduced his wife and his bank account to a condition of absolute despair, Jenkins realised that he had at length achieved success. His auto-electric door-mat was, indeed, a triumph of ingenuity. It consisted of an innocent-looking, wire-woven mat, connected by hidden wires to a dynamo in the cellar. This dynamo was driven by a small, but powerful, gas-engine. The working of this novel burglar trap was as simple as the idea itself. When the family retired to bed at night the door-mat was switched on to the dynamo, and the electricity was guaranteed to hold fast any unlawful foot which might tread upon it as securely as the most reliable stick- faafc paste. There was no need for any arrange- ment to waken. the occupants of the house, for as Jenkins himself grimly remarked, when the burglar felt the electricity fizzing through his system, his observations could be relied upon to waken everyone within a radius of a quarter of a mile. That is, with the current turned on at 'half pressure. At full pressure—well, Jenkins felt sad to think that even a burglar may sometimes leave sorrowing relatives behind to mourn his loss. to pleased was Jenkins with his invention that he at once manufactured half-a-dozen mats, and placed them throughout the house in such a position that he felt confident that no burglar could possibly gain admission without stepping upon one of them. The largest of the mats he placed in the vestibule, between the inner and the outer door. In the daytime the mats were, of course, entirely harmless; but at night, when Jenkins shut the outside door, he switched on the current and retired to bed, chuckling amiably at the reception in store for any enterprising burglar who might endeavour to gain admittance. The auto-electric door-mats had been in operation for several weeks without the expected robber putting in an appearance, and Mrs. Jenkins began to complain. Cer- tainly the dynamos shook the house to some extent, and the smell of gas, which was any- thing but pleasant, pervaded the whole place. Besides, the gas bill mounted up at an appall- ing rate. As Mrs. Jenkins very reasonably remarked, the gas company was proving more expensive than any robber could possibly be. You see, dear,' she remarked, even although a burglar were to ransack the house, he could I not take away more than about twenty pounds' worth of stuff, and that nasty gas- I engine of yours burns five shillings worth of gas every night, so that we would be fa-r cheaper to allow ourselves to be robbed.' Jenkins had confidence in his invention, however, and refused to remove it. As if to justify its existen-ce, a night or two afterwards the despised burglar trap amply proved its efficacy. Shortly after mid- night, as Jenkins was just dropping into a sweet doze, a prolonged yell of agony from the direction of the front door caused him to bound to the middle of the floor with remarkable energy. "'Help! Save me! I'll be murdered—I know I shall!" wailed Mrs. Jenkins, as another blood-curdling yell emanated from the same locality. Never, when I am here to protect you; responded Jenkins bravely. B-but hadn't you better go down and see who is at the door? T-tell them to go away, or I'll come down to them. Oh! What's that?" "The noise at the front door had swelled into a duet. A deep, hoarse yelp now mingled with the blood-curdling yell, creating a row which roused the entire neighbourhood. A belated passer-by might have observed at the neighbouring windows the sudden appearance of a row of white-capped heads, and if he had listened he would have heard the owners of the heads in question express i wishes regarding the future destination of Jenkins and the entire Jenkins household in language calculated to make the hair of an ordinary man stand on end. The only man who was not disturbed by the noise was Herr Bluementhal, the eminent German musician. This gentleman was in bed, in the transition stage between sleeping and waking, when the full fury of the fiendish commotion burst upon his ear. A sweet, child-like smile of delight o'erspread his countenance, and as he turned round the more distinctly to catch the celestial strains, he muttered faintly: 'Shades of Wagner! Das ist beautiful!' In the meantime Jenkins slowly began to realise what had happened. He recollected that somehow or other he had omitted to close the outside door the night before. A stray cat, taking advantage of this fact, had selected the mat as a convenient spot to pass the night, finding it considerably warmer than it had bargained for. A prowling dog, dead nuts on cats, had seen the cat appa- rently at its mercy, and had dashed up the stairs, only to fall a; victim to the omnip- otent door-mat. Having arrived at this correct surmise, and realising that, like the town-clerk of Ephesus, he was in danger of being called in question by the neighbours for the night's uproar, he hastened downstairs, with the inten-tion of turning off the current. In his haste, he applied full pressure instead; but the result was quite as satisfac- tory—to all, at least, but the owner of the dog, who claimed compensation for its pre- mature decease. "The next morning Jenkins buried the corpses in his back-yard, and things assumed their wonted aspect. "I don't know how it happened; whether Jenkins got careless and forgot to switch off the current, or whether the affair got out of gear and started on its own account, but any- way, one Sunday forenoon the auto-eleciric door-mat was left in full action. And it so happened that on that very day of all ethers Jenkins's Aunt Maria, a maiden lady from whom he had considerable expectations, took it into her head to pay him a visit. Tho yell which the good lady uttered a3 her feet were squarely planted on the door- mat would have done credit to a Sioux brave with an unlimited number of scalps to his belt. The Reverend Jonathan Smithcrs, on his way to conduct morning service, happened to be passing at the time. Seeing the poor lady in evident distress, his chivalrous in- stincts were at once aroused, and he rushed up the steps to her assistance. "'My dear madam!' he exclaimed, 'I am sorry to see you in this state. Can I—Oh! I shall not repeat what the reverend. gentleman said as he trod upon the door- mat. Suffice to say, it was a good "rhing that none of his leading elders happened to hear him, otherwise his congregation might shortly afterwards have found themselves under the necessity of appointing another pastor. "With the celeriy with which all small boys scent out a row, a crowd of urchins soon gathered round the foot of the steps. Much speculation was indulged in as to the cause of the unwonted spectacle. I'll tell yer wot it is,' exclaimed one con- fidently; 'it's a hautimatic waxwork, that's wot it is. The old bloke in there'—by this disrespectful epithet he referred to Mr. Jenkins-' the old bloke in there is allua kiddin' about with something or other, and he's made this show. Listen to 'em. You'd a'most think they were alive!' The unfortunate couple did seem very much alive, judging from their movements and the noise they made. For impassioned eloquence the remarks of the Reverend Jona- than Smithers had never been exceeded in his pulpit. (Their suitability for that place is, of course, an entirely different matter.) The commotion brought forth Mr. Thomp- son, -an elderly gentleman who occupied the house next to Jenkins. He was a nervous sort of man, Mr. Thompson, easily flurried. Realising that ho should do something, and not being very sure what, under the circum- stances, was the best thing to do, he did the only thing that occurred to him. He rushed to the corner of the street and summoned the fire briga de! AVith commendable promptitude the bri- gade turned out, and in an incredibly short time had their hose fixed ready for opera- tions. Meantime, Jenkins, who, if truth must be told, had retired to bed after breakfast, had been listening to the clamour at the front door in fear and trembling. At last he plucked up courage to creep towards a window which overlooked the front. (Mrs. Jenkins was in the kitchen when the uproar started, and at the first sound promptly fled to the coal-oellar, where she barricaded her- self behind half-a-ton of the best household coal.) Reaching the window, Jenkins cautiously opened it, and was in the act of putting his head out to survey the scene below when a. too conscientious fireman caught sight of him, and, thinking the fire must be in that direction, turned the hose full upon him. The unfortunate inventor turned two com- plete somersaults, and finally came to anchor at the further corner of the room. with a vague idea that the long-foretold end of the world had come at last. Jenkins says that he has attended several temperance meetings, but he never fully realised the power of water until that day. How long the turmoil might have lasted it is difficult to say; but just at that moment there came the sound of a terrific explosion from the basement premises which shook the house to its foundations. At the same tinto Aunt Maria and the Reverend Jonathan Smithers, who had been dancing like a couple of indefatigable marionettes, suddenly uttered a. simultaneous sigh of relief and immediately' fell into each other's arms, to the no small scandal of Miss Lucia Prim, who happened to be surveying the scene from across the way. The fire brigade, discouraged at the non- success of their efforts to locate the fire, gave up the attempt in disgust. A search-party entered the house, and after some investiga- tion succeeded in locating Jenkins. After that gentleman had been attended to, he was in a position to give a, rather halting and somewhat incoherent account of the distress- ing circumstances. Unfortunately, however, Aunt Maria was not in a. sufficiently forgiving nature to accept the explanation, and indignantly shook the dust of the household from off her shoes, declaring that a man who could spend his time over such nonsense was too big a fool for her money. "I met Jenkins a few days ago," concluded G. W. A., and he was thoroughly dis- couraged with the result of his experiment. On examination, he found both the gas- engine and the dynamo utterly useless, the explosion having destroyed them completely. In addition, his furniture was spoiled by water, his Aunt Maria's money was all up a tree, and to make things worse he received a thumping big account from the fire brigade for services rendered. "As for his wife. she vows that if be ever so much as mentions invention in ber presence she will go straight off to America and get a divorce." TO-MORROW-" THE AMERICAN DUEL." by JOHN K. LEYS.
