(By Special Arrangement.-Copy right.) A BREEZY PERSON By JOHN STRANGE WINTER I By JOHN STRANGE WINTER I Her friends said that she was "breezy"; her enemies dubbed her an irritating old cat." This was malicious, because Annie Chi- chester was not old, and she was assuredly not irritating; and, as Zilla Walton remarked one day to a little group of people who had been steadily running down Mies Chichester, it isn't often that cats can be called breezy." Fortunately for Miss Chichester, she had many friends and but few enemies. Not that it would have made any material difference to her, becaues she was well endowed with this world's goods, and she was blessed with a, fine spirit of independence, and did not care a snap of the fingers for the opinion of any- one. Now it happened that in Bridgeway. where Miss Ciiiohester lived, there were not many wholly independent women. True, there were the two old ladies at The Holt, but. then, they were so old that they were entirely out of the reckoning. There was Miss Molyneux. of Bridgeway Park, but she never took any notice of anybody in the town, not even the great Mrs. Chamberlain bereelf. so that she was out of the reckoning also. Miss Chichester lived at The Durdens, a COSY. yet commodious villa which had been built by her father, and boasted the best billiard-room in Bridgeway, bar none. The Durdens stood quite outside the town, and for the last ten years, ever since old Mr. Chichester was gathered to hie fathers, Anne Chiohester had ruled there as absolutely as a queen. In age Miss Chichester was just 42; in person bhe was tall and slight, a firm, resolute, cheery woman, with a mass of yellow-brown hair caught up in a careless knot on the crown of her head, and knowing neither the sear of hot irons, nor the prisonment of curling pins. She had clear grey eyes, a good com- plexion, and a pair of firm, capable, rather white hands. If she thought a person a fool, she did not hesitate to say so. She was charitable, energetic, kindly, and definite, and in the world of Bridgeway she was a social power. Mrs. Chamberlain, who was the great lady of Bridgeway, seemed to have no influence where Anne Chichester was con- cerned. It is quite true that she called her "Anne Chichester," and even that she held a certain place on account of it; but with Anne Chichester herself Mrs. Chamberlain, in spite of her greatness, stepped warily and with much forethought. One of the standing mysteries of Bridgeway I was why Anne Chichester had never married. Once, and once only, was anybody found bold enough to put the question to Miss Chichester herself. "Why don't I marry?" was that lady's brisk retort. "Why didn't I marry? Why haven't I married? Why, my dear, because I haven't!" And then she added, more briskly still, "Perhaps, I will some day." But the years had cqmt and gjose until Anne Chichester was forty-two, and she was still Anne Chiches- ter, and seemed likely to remain so. Then a great social upheaval took place' in Bridgeway, for the rector, Mr. Stanniforth, was made Dean of Danford. and for several weeks Bridgeway was very bus- in collecting for and choosing a parting gift for him. Then came the news that a new rector had been appointed, the Reverend Algernon Marjoribanke. The news was first discussed at a large afternoon party given by Mrs. Chamberlain. Who is he? somebody asked. It's a good name," said Mrs. Chamber- lain. "Oh, yee," exclaimed Mrs. Betterton-Jones; "its a6 good a name as Stanniforth." For the matter of that, I believe it's rather a better name than Stanniforth," said Anne Chicester. I have another piece of news for you," said Mrs. Chamberlain, in her loftiest manner. "The new rector is 45, and a bachelor." A sort of wave went round the room. The ladiee, especially the unmarried ones, looked at one another, and one of them laughed. That was Anne Chichester. I think I shall give up The Durdens-lot it furnished, or something—and go away," she said, rising from her chair and shaking out her garments. They were tailor-made gar. mente of irreproachable build and delicate" colour. Bat why, dear Miss Chichester? asked Mrs. Betterton-Jonie6. Well, for obvious reasons, dear woman." paid Annie Chichester, smiling. There will be such a flutter in the dovecots, that^-there! I needn't say any more. Good-bye, all of you. Good-bye, Mrs. Chamberlain." Mrs. Chamberlain followed her to the door, then tu-rned round. a stately and beneficent figure. "Mark my words," she said. "Before twelve months have gone by, we shall see Anne Chichester comfortably established in Bridgeway Rectory." We shall see what we shall see," saad Mrs. Bettertan-Jones, with a knowing air. Well, in due time the new rector came and took possession of his new living. HIe was a man of means and of considerable taste, and be provided for himself with a due eye to oom. fort and even elegance. His housekeeper was a motherly person, who wore blaok satin of an afternoon, and who issued her orders to the various tradespeople with an air of being at least a ducheps. It was the habit of Bridse- way ladies, who all did their own shopping, to drop judicious quettion>4 here and there as they followed that domestic custom. The tradespeople of Bridgeway were all distinctly of a friendly turn of mind. respectfully chummy, so to speak; but no information vras to be got anent the new rector. "HeFt of everything; pay every week," was all the in- formation that leaked out in that direction. The good people of Bridgeway were not very long in discovering that the Bev. Algernon Marjoribanks. although very desirable as a rector, and, for the matter of that. as a -hus- band, had no intetion of marrying anyone in Bridgeway or out of it. He promptly put himself right on that point as soon as he had touch with his new parishioners, for he be- lieved in the celibacy of the clergy, and was a little, spare, rather fussy man, a very High Churchman, and quite impervious to feminine charms. With Annie Chichester, however, he, in very early days, set up an intimate friend- ship. and so far as his attentions to her went, the idea that she would a year hence be safely ensconced as mistres.s of Bridgeway Rectory might have gained colour. But Anne Chichester's attitude was frankly common- place. "Don't you laugh at the new rector," she ss id one day. when several Bridgeway ladies were siyly chaffing- her on the subject of the rector's frequent visits to The Durdeos. "The rector's a nice little man, and much too good to be rector of Bridgeway. What you really want here is a man witiiout a penny of pri- vate means, and a wife and ten children— which is what you'll get if you're not care- fuJ." go the friendship between the two o(m- tinued, bat did not develop into the expected bne& And a te? more weeks ^ent by, until, 1 one dreary wbrteea afternoon. wb&n :we. } dtlOlWRter 1 "1 i g by her Amwuwrom I ) fireside enjoying tea and hot buttered muffins, the rector was announced. Ah, is that you, Rector?" she eaid. Yoa are just in time for tea and muffins. The muffins are unusuaaly good to-day." Am I? That's good hearing." The rector believed in the celibacy of the clergy, but he also believed that the labourer is worthy of his hire in the matter of food. "I can't con- vince my old housekeeper," he remarked, ae he helped himself to a second piece of muffin, that afternoon tea is good for a man. "That's nonsense!" said Miss Chichester, holding ouit her hand for his cap. "So I think. She always declares, however. that my lunch hasn't had time to digest, and j it spoils my dinner." Miss Chichester laughed. All old people have their crotchets, Rector." she said, pour- ing the cream into his cup with a liberal hand. "And, after all. if she does you well in other directions, afternoon tea is 4 HftH matter." Which is what I always think," said the Bector. "By the bye. Miss Chichester, I want. you to come and dine with me next weeK." "Dine with you? Will the old lady a-pprove? Oh, she won't approve or disapprove. The f,ct is, a mane coming to stay with me next week, and I'd like you to dine with me while he is here." "Very well, Rector, I'll come with pleasure. Going to have anybody else?" Xo—that is, Trevor Johnson, of oouree. Not another lady, if that s what you mean. I—I thought you wouldn't mind." Oh, I don't mind. There's nobody in Bridgeway that I either care for sufficiently or fear sufficiently to spoil my dinner because they're not helping to eat it. Per- sonally, I think Mr. Trevor Johnson as nice a boy as one could wish to meet within a day's march. I only hope these silly Bridge- way women won't spoil him. I am afraid-, by the way, that I see .him going around— that he isn't like you." As how? said the Rector, taking yet A third piece of muffin. I don't think he believes in the celibacy of the clergy," said Miss Chichester, with a twinkle in her eye. I daresay not. It's all a matter of per- sonal conviction. I don't know that I should believe in the celibacy of the clergy if I wanted to get married. I don't I never did but once, Miss Chiehe,-ter--and she died. I never thought of any other woman, and I find celibacy a very convenient cloak some- times to prevent questions and-cr-p.ang 11-Cing made for you-you understand?" '-wing made for v I understand perfectly," said Miss Chiches- ter. He sat yet a little while longer. Shall we say Wednesday?" he asked, when he had actually risen to take leave. "Wednes- day at eight o'clock?" "Yes, that'll do me," said Miss Chichester. So on the following Wednesday at eight o'clock Miss Chichester was shown into the rectory drawing-room. It was essentially a man's drawing-room, arranged by an entirely middle-class housekeeper. Miss Chichester smiled as she looked round, thinking of the horrified faces on several Bridgeway ladies when t.Ø,y fcad learned that afternoon w#om- she was dining that evening. Dear women, they are so funny!" her thoughts ran. 'T <It.'Y think I cxnt go and. eat a cut of mutton ""with the rector, twt I must needs get ides.E, of setting up housekeep- ing with him. How funny it is!" Her thoughtg5 were interrupted by the entrance of the rector him.belf. I hope you won't mind," he said. "Dinner will be a quarter of an hour late. I've just had a line from Trevor Johnson. He's had to go and christen a sick baby." I don't mind in the least," said Anne Chichester. "Yon never told me, by the bye. what the name of your friend was who is stay- ing with you." "Didn't I? Oh, how stupid of me! His name is Edward Carruthers; he's just come back from India." For a moment the whole world seemed to spin round Anne Chichester. She put out, her hand and caught hold of the chimney- piece that slie might steady herself. What did you say he was called?" staa aeked. I said his name is Edward Carnrthers. And here he is. Oar rut here, let me introduce you to one of my most valued parishioners, Miss Chichester." For the space of a few seconds there was dead silence. Then Colonel Oarrutbere made a step or two across the hearth towards Xiet Chichester. "Anne!" he said, and held out both his hands.
