(By Special A rra n gement.-Copy right.) I THE SANDAL-WOOD i BOX f I By GILBERT STANHOPE. I < It had been a long and wearying1 day, and it was with a sigh of relief that Leslie Bran- don at length turned his slepe t-owards his tent- The last of the recalcitrant headmen of the Looshai tribes, whose revolt had. been the catise of this punitive expedition. had ten- dered his snbmission; the last fine exacted for the murder of inoffensive villagers had been paid; the restless tribesmen had solemnly promised to abstain from thievincr, ravaging, and kiliing, fully intending t3 keep this promise as long as the strong arm of the I British Raj was within striking distance—and no longer. The small expeditionary force was free to return now from the desolate high- lands of 'Upper Burnia to India and civilisa- tion. Leslie Brandon's heart leaped within him at the thought of that bungalow in Bom- Lay, where, as soon as it was possible to get leave, he would find his true love waiting for him, and v.here he would forget, in the joy of re-union, al-- the pangs 01 parting and all the dangers and discomforts that his being ckoscn for special duty as trasport officer in this little expedition had entailed. He was startled from his blissful reverie by a low moan that seemed to come from the other side of a little hillock, crowned with low bushes, that he had just passed. Leslie stopped and lif;noo-yes, it was unmistakably the moan of a man in pain. He turned back, and in the rapidly gather- ing darknet-s he almost stumbled ever a pros- I trate form. vrho is it? What's the matter?" he asked first in English and then. recollecting himself, in the nearest approach to the bill dialect that he could muster. The long, lean figure wrapped in a yellow robe stirred slightly. A head was lifted, and peering forward Leslie was "ware of two keen eyes, lit up with an almost unearthly brilli- TT _J T ,l 'r\O I ance. lie answereu xjeoiie & iiutoj in u. Hindustani, just a few broken words, for speech was evidently painful to him. He WCUi hurt, be said, dying—had been kicked on the head by an unruly transport mule that had broken loose. He wanted water. Iveslie wished to move him into his tent, but the old man, who from his garb was one of the mendicant, wandering priests of some Buddhist order, begged to be allowed to die there, under the wide vault of heaven, with the bles-ed stars looking down upon him. All he v.ished for was water, for he had been lying unnoticed there since early dawn, and his throat was parched and dry. Leslie in pity for tbe man's sufferings, forgot his fatigue, hurried back to the en- campment, and returned with his servant, bearing a lantern and a jar of water. Between them they did what they could for the dying man, whose eyes, with the glaze of death already upon them, thanked him mutely, and then, when Leslie s servant had retired discreetly to a little distance, his glanced implored—nay, seemed to compel- Leslie to come neArer and stoop down ctQse to ringnceens. My spirit," he whispered, is going to the great AU-Spirit-for a little space I hold it back—to show you a kindness—in gratitude for help in my need." His trembling fingers drew from the folds of his robe a small jade bowl and a frag- ment of some strangely scented paper. "Light this," he said to Leslie, put the ashes in the bowl—hold in your mind the thought of the person you most wish to see—and your wish is granted." Leslie wonderingly obeyed, his Western matter-of-factness in abeyanoe for the moment; the silence of the gathering night, the solemn serenity of the dying man, the earnest, compelling power of his deep-set, wonderful eyes, impressed him strangely, He lit a match and applied it to the paper, dropping it at the same time into the little jade bowl. A faint aromatic odour arose from the bowl and a thin wreath of smoke. Leslie looked fixedly at it thinking of-well, it did not take him long to decide of whom to think. The thin ring of smoke seemed to form itself into a frame, a frame that at first surrounded nothingness, bnt gradually one feature after another came into distinctness. There was a room with cool, clean matting on the floor and a light pretty chintz on the furniture-a girl's room by the daintiness of its adornment. And on a sofa lay a girl's form, but it was convulsed with sobbing, the fair hair all in disorder, the soft, rounded cheek pressed into the cushion as if to deaden the anguish of pain. Leslie caught his breath. It was Gladys, and his heart ached at the sight of her anguish. What, in heaven's name, was her trouble? It was maddening to see her and not to know. He looked long at the weeping figure. Then his eye caught sight of a sandal-wood box lying on the floor close beside the sofa. With a start he recognised it as one be had sent her after they had parted at Bombay I and before he started for Burma. He had I one exactly like it. wherein he kept her letters and her portrait, which for safety's sake he had left behind in the adjutant's charge. He had been pleased when he found in a shop in the bazaar a box like his own, and he had sent it to her before going away, with a small portrait of himself he had secretly had painted, and a long, loving letter, in which, stirred by the feeling that this might be a final farewell, he had revealed to her the depth and strength of his un- dying affection, as in the light-hearted atmosphere of ordinary life he never could have done. Was it only his absence and his possible danger that had so pained and grieved her? Surely it could not be. The figure rose, while he still watched it, put back the pretty hair from the tear- stained face, and then he saw more clearly the traces that poignant anguish had left on the girlish features. She rose, and he saw that her hands held a packet of letters- his letters-he recognised his own vigorous handwriting; she kissed them once, twice, with a fervour of passion and regret, then she dropped them into a box that stood open on a table. Next she looked at her finger on which was the ring he had given her. She looked at it long and strangely, he could almost see the sob that arose in her throat, but was choked down, as she drew this off and dropped it also into the box. Then she took down from it-s place on the wall a little drawing that the regimental surgeon, who had a. pretty turn for portraiture, had made of Leslie Brandon, and that Gladys Winyate had begged of him just after their engagement. That went in too; then with white, set lips the girl closed and sealed the box and addressed it. His fascinated gaze followed the movements of her fingers as she traced the words Leslie Brandon. Esq., 2nd Battalion, the Regt-, Ba-rrackpore. Then she broke down utterly, flung her arms on the table and laying her head upon them buret into an uncontrollable flood of taaes. [ The vision, gradually faded; the smoke r wreath dispersed; and Leslie Brandon fount himself again on the Burma hillside, with the rays from the lantern falling on the face of the mendicant priest, whose head had fallen back and who lay, with a smile on his lips. still and dead. » "What! leave to go down to Bombay now, when you've only just got back to the j regiment?" growled the Colonel, "and the adjutant away! It's impossible!" But Leslie was in that state of mind to which nothing is impossible, and he oon- ) tinued to plead with feverish eagernees and that strength cf purpose which over- comes all obstacles. The Colonel liked the young fellow, and knew that he had had a hard time and had done good work in the Looshai country, and so the impossible happened, and Leslie found himself at the Bycnlla Club. waiting for the earliest moment at which it would be possible to caJl at the Wingates." For the mystery was still unsolved: only the vision he had seen by the side of the dying fakir had received the strangest con- firmation. On rejoining at Barrackpore he had found a number of letters and parcels awaiting him, among them a packet that 1 with a strange sense of familiarity but an awful pang oi apprehension he opened. It wris addressed in Gladys Wing-ate's clear handwriting and contained, yes, he knew only too well what it contained-his letters. his portrait, his ring—returned to him with- cut a word of explanation What could it mean? His own Gladys could not be unfaithful to him-be could no more doubt her than he could doubt him- self. And as be recalled that vision, that dream-call it whai you will—in which he had seen her, he knew it was no coquettish whim that had led her to throw him over. She had put an end to the engagement, it was true, but it had broken her heart to do so. What could it mean? Well, he would find out now. When he drove up to the portico of the Wingates' bungalow his lips were eo parched and dry that he could hardly frame the necessary query as to the ladies being at home. Yes, the Mem-Sahib was in and the Missy Baba, but the Missy Baba was not well and was lying down. Airs. Wingaie entered the room almost immediately, and I^slie, whoee recollections ol her were of one of ..he kindest and most good-natured of women, V.ifS Quite unpre- pared for the cold haughtiness of her demeanour to-day. I am at a loss to understand your coming here, Aix. Brandon. she said, ignoring his j outstretched hand; "after all that has happened it is little less than an insult." I—I—ilra. Wingate he cried, implor- ingly, "what is it that has happened? That is what I want to know! That is what I cannot understand!" "What is it that has happened! What ia it that you have done! You sought my daughter out, you won her affection, you begged her to marry you-" Yes, yes,' he interrupted, "but why hae she thrown me over?" "She thrown you over! This comes well from yon, Mr. Brandon, after breaking my poor girl's heart with your cruel, coid- nearted conduct." *4bwp&4-done?" cried poor Leslie, more and more bewildered. "If to love with all my heart and soul, to think of her night and day-is to break her heart "Stop!" cried Mrs. Wiugate, "it is impossible there is some mistake? Did you not send her back all her letters, her portrait, all she ever gave you, without one word of explanation ?'' Leslie sat down and held his head in both his hands. "I see it all!" he cried, jumping up, "I sent her the wrong box: Mrs. Wingate," he said, seizing both her hands iu his eagerness, "let me explain. All my greatest treasures, Gladys's letters and presents, I kept in a curiously carved sandal-wood box that I have had for years. Just before I went away 1 happened to see in the bazaar another box just like miue- The though at once came to my mind to buy it for Gladys. I would send it to her with my farewell letter, with one or two little presents I had bought for her. The fancy pleased me that she would have a treasure box just like mine. I liked to tiuaJt. of her keeping my letters in it just as I kept hers in mine. Well, I sent her—as I thought—the box I had just bought, but I remember now, the Colonel sent for me, and I was hurried, so I took her box and gave it into the adjutant's charge to tako care of for me during my absence—and I must have sent her mine!" And the poor child naturally concluded when instead of the farewell letter you had promised there came to her all her own letters and presents returned without a woro —naturally she thought that you had thrown her over." Leslie was silent a few minutes. He was thinking of that scene the old fakir had shown to his mental vision. Who was he to be the cause of that sweet soul'e anguish? How little was he worthy of such absorbing- love: Will she ever forgive me?" he asked. Mrs. Wingate smiled. A load of care eeemed to have fallen from her shoulders. She looked ten years younger than when she h;&d entered the room. You shall see for yourself," she said, and passed behind the carved blaekwood screen that stood before the entrance to the drawing-room. Leslie stood lost in thought. What did it all mean? How explain tne fact that he had seen—there on that lonely hillside—what was happening in Bombay? There was no explanation possible, but there was the f&ct. The rustic of a silken skirt aroused him. Gladys stood before him. her face a little thinner than when he had seen it last, but radiant now with love and happiness. There was no need for explanation, for questioning, for doubt. They saw into each other's souls and were satisfied, but as Leslie clasped her closely to him and pressed a kiss upon her trembling lips, he shuddered to think how nearly he had lost her through the fatal instrumentality of that sandal-wood box. (The End.) TO-MOEROW'S TAll—" THE BEAUTIFUI WORLDLING," by G. B. BUBGIN,
HOW HE PROFOSED
HOW HE PROFOSED The diffident young man wanted to propose to the girl, but for the life of him he did not know how to go about it. He read books on the subject, and sought for information from men who had experience, and, while the theories were admirable in every instance, he found that the practice thereof was a very different thing. He was walking with her one evening, thinking of these things, when her shoe-lace became untied. She stuck out her pretty little foot with a smile, looked down at it, and he fell on his knees and tied the tace. Then he waJkea on with her, and the elioe became untied again. See if you can tie a knot that will stick," she said, as he worked away at it. He looked up at her tenderly. r know a man who can," he said. Do you want him to tie it for 708?" she asked ooqtjettishly. Yes," her replied. She jerked her foot 1 He smiled to hixneelf. "Its tie parson," he said, as he a rose to his feet and finished the warik
