I The "C.C.C.C. or the Clerks' Comfortable Cafe Company (Limited), was a thriving affair-as any business for the supply of food should be-and had several palatial establishments in the City, and those places in the West End where clerks do mostly congregate. The C.C.C.C. was one of those concerns—so rare, alas—which combine philanthropy and earn a big dividend. It filled alike the stomachs of the clerks and the pockets of the shareholders. It advanced the cause of temperance, and yet was quoted high upon the Stock Exchange. The clerks, too, were delighted with it, for they crowded its various depots, deeming it a privilege to be allowed to place their humble coins upon the bronze and marble pay slabs in exchange for the exhilarating cup of coffee, the ingenuous scone, or more mysterious pork pie. The company was mixed, by which it must not be inferred that any undesirable characters ever found their way into the haJlowed precincts—such shady individuals generally affected places of a higher price, and left the C.C.C.C. severely alone-but that clerks of both sexes obtained refresh- ment there, mingling freely at meal times. This concession was advantageous from the shareholder's point of view (the only one). since the presence of either sex was a source of attraction to the other one. Even clerks will be human—out of business hours. For if, during the all too short time at their disposal, the gentlemen clerks were absorbed in gazing at their feminine competitors, it stands to reason they could not possibly consume everything they paid for, whereas the ladies, feeling themselves under the admiring glances of the men, consumed more cups of tea and plates of assorted cakes than they would otherwise have done. Such is the influence of sex upon the stomach, and thus did it favourably re-act upon the dividends of the C.C.C.C. A constant patron both at lunch and tea was Eden Eawlings, a young clerk with a slender salary and an unlimited fund of romance. But if at the first-named meal he managed to partiaJly satisfy an appetite out of all proportion to his modest wage, it was at the second that his romantic cravings obtained fulfilment. For it was at tea-and that on Thursday afternoons—that his eyes were wont to be blessed by a Beautiful Vision—thus he named her to himself-whose appearances marked for him with dazzling whiteness the drab monotony of his way through life. Every Thursday throughout the year- except for a few weeks' absence in the summer, after which she would re-appear with her face tanned by the sea air-she occupied the same place, at the same hour, and always carried a book whose contents she would read the while she took her tea. Once Eden had managed to read the title, and had promptly squandered the quarter of a week's salary upon a copy, so that he might claim mutual acquaintanceship with its fictitious characters. This was as near to his divinity as he had yet approached—or was likely to; for he did not dare to do more than gaze at her from the opposite side of the great big, crowded room. Others might sit at the same table; the ignorant and profane; but to the true worshipper the very essence of adoration lies in the remoteness of the thing adored. So, without her knowing it, the presence of this pretty girl filled Eden's life, tingeing each sordid commonplace with a. sweet romance. She certainly was charming to behold, and always faultlessly turned out: a striking contrast to the other lady customers, whose dress was either shoddily pretentious or else aggressively severe. The very seasons of the year were marked for Eden by the frocks she wore. Summer for his companions might mean mere dust and lassitude; for him it was represented by a cool muslin frock and shady rose-stewn hat. Winter, which might have otherwise have been associated in his mind with damp feet and a perpetual cough, was symbolised instead by the pleasant contrast of soft pink cheeks and dark—but no softer—sable; which fur, he did not fail to notice, was very different from the cheap and shiny substitute affected by other girls. It was November, and suffering humanity was for the most part given over to colds and coughs. Eden Rawlings was amongst the number; still he struggled on bravely with his work, for the wages of sickness is—nil, and his thirty shillings a week could not be lightly sacrificed. But so long as he was sure of a glimpse of his Vision Beautiful en Thursday afternoons he felt that nothing could go very wrong with him-and then the Vision ceased from visiting the C.C.C.C., and poor Eden was forlorn indeed. He had never asked the waitress p to the identity of the lady he worshipped; such a proceeding would have seemed to him indelicate, almost profane. But when three successive Thursdays went by and still his divinity appeared not, Eden felt that he must speak, and so he found words at last: Do you know who the young lady is who used to come here for tea on Thursday afternoons, and who sat over there?" indicating a table opposite. "Don't you know?" exclaimed the girl, with the insuperable stupidity of her class, for why should he have asked her the question if he had? "That is Miss Burman, the daughter of the managing director of the C.C.C.C. She's ever so rich, and she comes in here to call for her father once a week. She's to be married at Christmas. I suppose she's busy buying the trousseau—that's why she hasn't been here the last few weeks." Here the girl thought it necessary to heave a sigh indicative of extreme sentimentality- no easy matter, for she was outrageously tight-laced. "Dear me, I wonder when my time will come?" Eden was too dazed at the news to supply the necessary rejoinder; so the girl went on. The wedding is to be the week after Christmas. We are all being stopped a day's pay to give her a wedding present." Here she was called away to attend to a customer. The daughter of the managing director going to be married after Christmas Now that he knew the truth, he realised what all his make-believe had meant to him. He left his tea untasted, and went towards the door, turning to give a last look back before he left the shop. Out in the street a sudden fit of coughing took him. The air seemed more raw, the rain more pitiless, as he crawled home that evening to his weary room. U. I iMIalme Burman was a very happy girl; everyone told her so, and she had oeen brought up to believe that what everybody said must necessarily be the case. So she ended by telling herself the same story, but without conviction; for in spite of the many assurances to the contrary she did not feel particularly happy, though she was forced to admit the want must be in herself. She went over in her own mind the various causes which contributed to this supposititious happiness, and they were both obvious and overwhelming; she was rich, her parents idolised her, and she was going to be married in a few weeks' time to a man who was in every way a desirable match, and who would some day be extremely wealthy. It seemed, therefore, as if her only possible reason for not being thoroughly happy was that she had too many excellent reasons for being so: a truly humiliating conclusion. It was after tea, and, as had been the custom of late, Ellaline and her fiance, Wilson Ker, were left in sole possession of the luxurious lamp-lit drawing-room at the Burman's house in Gloucester Gate. Wilson Ker had been pronounced by Mr. Burman to be an admirable business man- for his age—and also to have a "head on his shoulders." Viewed externally, the head was a handsome head as heads go, even if the hair was getting a trifle thin on the top, but pressure of business is bad for the roots, while the shoulders were broad and massive. Still, womanlike, Ellaline, would sooner have had Wilson's own assurance that his affection for her came before business matters, and that he was the possessor of a loving heart as well as of a business head. The motto of the society in which the Burmans lived was "Business is bnsjnehoS." and Ellaline sometimes thought that this same business threatened to be everything else in life as well. "Certainly, you can't think how interesting it is to watch the people there. Such crowds of them, and with such appetites." "A lot of half-starved clerks." "Still, it is thanks to them that father is so rich. They seem quite happy though, so different from What does constitute happiness, Wilson? Surely not eating four big meals a day?" "Being able to digest them, more likely. and making a big income." "Nothing else?" "Not that I know of." "Then—why are you marrying me?" "Because I am fond of you, of course." Most decidedly she was a stupid girl, she told herself: to feel the want of something, and yet to be in ignorance as to the precise nature of what that something was. She had been spoilt no doubt. The wiser plan would be to think of the good things she had. instead of wondering vainly what things she had not. It was as foolish as to miss a train just for the sake of counting up one's luggage. Life was made up of realities: things that were bought and sold. If ell her friends agreed she was a happy girl. it was that they had good reasons for thinking so-as she for being what they said she was. Ellaline felt she had been unfair to her fiance. She went behind his chair, and kissing the back of his head, she whispered contritely:- "I will do my best to make you a good wife, Wilson, and-and I am sure we shall be very happy." Wilson passed a projecting finger over Lia ruffled hair, which required rather delicate adjustment 80 as to hide the incipient baldness. "Of course we shall be," he replied, his tone implying that the matter left no room for doubt, "you shall have a diamond sun- burst for your hair, the smartest Victoria in the town, and anything else you care to have—in reason." These generous assurances depressed poor Ellaline profoundly, for she was guiltily conscious that it was precisely something not in reason she coveted the most. m When Eden Rawlings, on leaving the C.C.C.C. had turned to give a look at the spot where Ellaline Burman was wont to take her tea, he had a presentiment that it would be the last-and so it proved to be; for first bronchitis and then pneumonia laid hold on him, and neither his office r.or yet the C.C.C.C. was destined to see him any more. Eden's landlady was a hospitable soul, who was always willing to accommodate any number of lodgers—at a price; but there was one visitor whom she was determined to shut out, and to this end she impressed on Eden the absolute necessity of his being taken to a hospital without delay. To Eden it mattered little where he died: he had already entered the region of complete indifference. One thing only weighed upon his mind: his inability to procure a suitable wedding gift for Ellaline. Such an act would, a short time since, have seemed to him one of the wildest presumption; but the near approach of Death, the socialist, had made him see things differently. Among his scant belongings the most treasured was a ring which had been his mother's: a very modest ring. old fashioned, even pathetic in its insignificance. Five tiny turquoises arranged in the form of a forget-me-not, with a seed pearl for centre. It had been her engagement ring: the irony of the term, since married life had been for her nothing but a hard-fought battle for existence. This Eden decided he would send; so packing it tenderly in a little box, together with a few halting words of explanation and apology, he entrusted it to his landlady with the request that she would send it without fail directly she received news of his death. The worthy creature graciously consented, being well aware of the value- lessness of the contents; besides she was expecting another lodger that very evening to take possession of Eden's room at an increased payment of five shillings weekly. Only ten days separated Ellaline from her wedding day. She had abandoned all useless longings, and had allowed herself to be caught up body and mind in the vortex of preparations for the great event. The wedding presents she had received: two hundred of them! They were, in the language sacred to the occasion, "both numerous and costly," and were marshalled in imposing array in the second drawing- room. Ellaline felt positively abashed when in their presence—it was like entering a room full of oppressive strangers. "Another present, darling child," said Mrs. Burman to Ellaline, as the latter entered the breakfast-room, "I really thought the very last of the stragglers had come in." Ellaline took the small packet from her mother and listlessly began to open it- "I wonder who it can be from." continued Mrs. Burman, who all along had shown far more interest in her daughter's presents than had the recipient. "Everyone who ought to have sent a present has sent one long ago." "Perhaps the sender had been actuated by some feeling other than a sense of duty- that will be a welcome change." "What an odious little ring," exclaimed Mrs. Burman disgustedly, when at last the contents were revealed—"a turquoise forget- me-not. Let me look at the address; it must be meant for one of the servants." Ellaline made no comment; she was busy reading the few uncertain lines accompany- ing her so belittled gift. "It is addressed to you. It cannot be from anyone we know." "No," answered Ellaline, softly, placing the ring and scrap of paper in her dress, "It is from nobody we know." And nothing more was said. When she waa alone, Ellaline read the words again:— "I am only a city clerk—one of a crowd; but the sight of your sweet face on Thursday afternoons has taught me happiness. I heard you were going to be married. I send this little ring-it was my mother's—in gratitude, and with the hope that you will be very happy. I would not dare to take this liberty, but that I am ill, and only when I am gone will it be sent to vou.-E.R." Ellaline took the ring and looked at it. Nothing is more pathetic than rings whose owners are at rest: they seem so futile, so disconsolate. She slipped it on her finger; it fitted perfectly.
