[By Special Arrangement.—Copyright.] AN OLD MANS DARLING. By JEAN M DDLEMASS Author of In Storm and Strife," The Case of David Lisle," Maisie's Irriumpb," Love is ijord of All," &c. Everybody know him. and yet no one knew anything about Inni. lie was a myetery. Thoagii he was a little old man, with eagle's eyes, there waa a tender expression abouthis lips that never failed to touch those who came in contact with him; while they regretted the generally hungry look of his face. He went. by the appellation of "Pere Andre," and lived quite alone in a tiny, half-famished apartment in the liatigrnolle. He did his own little bit of cooking:—e-nch aa it was--nnd there was not one among the com- meres who sold provisions in the market close to his houee who did not treat Pere Andre more generously than the rest of their cus- tomers. Thus the few pence ha expended on his weekly pot an feu gave him, thanks to their generosity, several good meals. For several da,ys the hindly market folk had seen nothing of the little old man, who for several years had been a constant visitor to tLcir (stalls. Even when he had not been on purchaser intent the cheery voices of the vendors did him good and inspired him with fresh life; for it was dull and still enough in his dreary apartment, where there was none to communica-te with him save the silent voices which came from the books which lay littering all pver the floor, or the babbling of the cremailliere when he hung it up to warm the soap which waa hie eoie sustenance. "Tiens, where can Pere Andre be? Some mischief must have befallen. I don't go back to my man and my children this blessed day without, going to inquire about him," said buxom Afathilde, as she was loading a little hand-cart with the vegetables she had not sold, preparatory to a five-mile walk to her country home. "Take care, Ma-thilde," answered a lean, careful woman; "if there's much of an illness you may be let in." "Saints above! And shall I refrain from helping on that account? Take care lest you find no one to give you a hand when you are in want. Mere Frugadite," and, the last carrot tossed on the cart, the tarpaulin cover well tied down, off trotted Mathilde to the side street-, where she believed that the old man I dwoelt. The concierge or caretaker was a oobbler. Black and grimy he was working at his window, awl in hand. Lie Pere Andre, docs he live here?" asked Mathilde, who knew the concierge from his visits to the market, knew, also, that he was morose and disagreeable. "Fifth fioor-door to the right," was the surly answer. "Ia he ill?" asked the cornmore. A shrug and a grumble were the reply. Too much to do to attend to the ailments of the locataires." "It is to be hoped that the locataires will have too much to do to attend to you when you aro ill," growled Matnilde, as she beckoned to a comrade to look after her hand-cart in the street, and then she trotted off up to the fifth storey in order to ascertain, if possible, what was the matter with Andre. She knocked at the doer to the right, and somewhat to her surprise it was almost immediately opened by a bright-faced young lady, whose appearence was scarcely in keeping either with the poverty-stricken apartment or the neighbourhood in which it was situate. Mere Mathilde dropped a clumsy curtsey. Pardon, mademoiselle, I have made a mis- take in the door. I came to inquire after Pere Andre." No, no, it is all right. He lives here." Is he ill, mademoiselle? He has not been in the market for some days." Entrez, Mere Mathilde, entres," came the old man's voice from the interior of the room. Que vous etes bonne, good, very good." Tims invited, Mathilde went in, ajid her country-bred mind was shocked by the dirt and untidiness that greeted her. If she had only known she would have come and righted things up a bit," she thought. Whether Pere Andre would have thanked her for this was, howevar. very jJoubtful. "Wny didn't the girl do it?" was the next thought. Then she once more came to the conclusion that she was too much of a lady. What little breath Mathilde had left after mounting the stairs and at the top falling in with such an unexpected apparition of grace and beauty, however, once more nearly deserted her when Andre said: This is my granddaughter, la petite Suse." All in a long gasp. Then a goodly bunch of carrots and turnips and sweet herbs, which had considerably contributed to the toil of mounting un- accustomed stairs, was laid upon the table. Some legumes foT the pot au feu, a little offering for old friendship's sake. I hope mademoiselle will not be offended?" "Offended, madame! Why should I be offended? It is so good of yon to think of le pere." and Suse's arms were round good old Mathilde's neck. The girl was quite natural and simple- hearted in spite of her pretty face and dainty clothes. I love everyone who is kind to grand- pere," she said, noting the commere's surprise and pleasure. He has been so good to me. He "saved, and saved, and saved, until he had me taught thoroughly, and put me into a large couturiere's business in the Rue Vivienne, and when I have made pots of money grand-pere is going to live with Paul and me in a ohaJet outside Paris. It is the dream of my life." Mathilde looked at the emaciated form of the little white-faced old man who lay on the bed, and she doubted the realisation of the dream, but all she said was: Bon. So there is a M. Paul." "My fiance," and the girl blushed as she thought perhaps she had been too gushing to this stranger. The old man, however, set matters right by murmuring: Good boy, Paul. My children are both very good. All I have left on earth—all—the rest have gone before." "We are going to make up for them, dear grandfather. You are not to think about a sad past, but of the bright future, when you are well and strong again, living with us among the lime trees at Asnieres." It's a long way off," he murmured. Not at all. Paul is already looking for a little chalet. He has got such a large rise lately in the printing-office; you can't con- ceive how much tho patron' thinks of my Paul. The latter part of the sentence was addressed as information to Mathilde, who was wiping her eyes with the corner of her large checked apron, so touched was she at witnessing the affection that existed between the old man and the young girl. She was thinking, too, of her own home, where bicker- ings and strife were frequent, though they w-ere as wormwood to kindly Mathilde. But her man was not altogther desirable or con- trollable. IVould the babies-for her chil- dren were still young—ever be to her as Stme was to old Andre? Mathilde was, however, too practical to be much of a dreamer. She had come there to be helpful, and she nwant to help. So she set to work. with Suse's assistance, to tidy up. and between them the room soon presented a more com- fortable appearaaoe. Nor were the old man's Lares and Penates unduly disturbed, since lie gave directions as to the handling1 of these, to him sacred objects. Suuc ran down to a boucherfe on the opposite side of the street, and speedily returned with a larger [ piece of beef than had been in that sWck-Put since Andr# w:? its possessor, and with Mathilde's vegetables the pot au feu was forthwith set a-going. Then came the tune for Mathilde's depaz- ture since she had a long trudge home. She i would look in on next market-day, she said. Just, however, as she was taking her leave there came a knock at the outer door. Suse opened it and uttered an exclamation when she saw one of the little ouvrieres from the Rue Vivieune. looking excited and bewildered. "Mon Dieu, Justine! what has happened?" cried Suse. "Oh, mademoiselle, mademoiselle!" was all the girl could say, and the tears began to stream down her cheeks. "Speak, Justine, for mercy's take! What is it?" "M. Paul-an accident!" the girl gasped. Suse uttered a cry as of intense pain, tmd fell back into Mathilde's arms. She was not, however, the sort of girl to allow her feelings for long to take precedence of active measures. She heard Mathilde say somewhat angrily: "Allons, fiilette, tell us quickly what haa hap- pened. Is M. Paul alive?" "Yes, yes. He is terribly hurt, but he is alive. An automobile overtook him ae he was cross- ing the boulevard-a passer-by knew him, knew that he was mademoiselle's fiance, and came to tell us." Suso had by this time pulled herself to gelher, and. raising her head from Mathilde# shoulder, expressed her intention of going at i-noe to Paul. Poor old Pere Andre! He and his ailments seemed to be entirely forgotten in the general consternation caused by tho alinoun, cem, pitt of Paul's aecidert. Yet no on* there, not even SUM herself, felt more keenly sorrowful for what had occurred than did Pere Andre. For years pi.6t he had been devoting his life to the bringing about of a happy -ion between these two young people. for Paul was the son of an old friend of Andre's, and from their cradle these two youngstare had been destined for each other. Go at once to Ptul-of oourwe ghe most. I have been made most comfortable, and waui for nothing; I aon all right." So said the unselfish old man, in u ehflery a, voice as he could command. < Ma-thilde offered to stay with him? but on no account would he keep her away from her husband and children. If Suse would send a messenger along to give him full particular* of the state in which she found Paul, that was all he asked. This, of course, she promised, and in less than half-an-hour from the time they ha4 hung up the old man's etock-pot with eo mnofe. interest, he was once more alone—alone, too, with thoughts that were far more sad and sorrowful than he bad permitted those about him to perceive. Pere Andre felt that the' hand of time had already been laid eo heavily upon him that he would never live to reach the much-talked-of cottages at Asnieres; and now that Paul had been stricken, that dream of happiness seemed further off than ever. What would become of his little Snse it they were both taken from her, and abe left with her n tillesse and her pretty ways to battle with a cold, wicked world. True, she had a good position as premiere in one of the most renowned houses in Paris, but that posi- tion would not protect her from the troubled adventures that were constantly arising in such a city a.3 Paris." They were dreary, depressing, ominooa thoughts that crowded in the old man's brain, as he lay there; aud at last, weak and weary, though he was, he crawled out of bed, took a key from a corner where it was hidden, aud opened a cupboard. From this cupboard he produced an old spoutless teapot which, when he took off tho lid, aj)peare-I to be crammed with papers. Bank.notes Pere Andre was not then the pauper his neighbours believed him to be, and yet he was no miser. This was Suse's dot, and not aia inconsiderable dot either. For years past Pere Andre had been steward—" surinten- dant," as he was called-to a. rich nobleman. who, when he died, left his faithful eBrraJit an annuity. Scarcely a penny of this money had Andre touched. He 1^4 worked as long as hft able, and gained enough to pay his re8( a" meet his small requirements; of late he ha4 dipped sparsely iato his own savings, most of which. however^gJiAd beea us" for Sam-in edncation in iadressmaking:. He coold not leave her his income since it died with him, but he would save it for her—and this he did, and yearly invested it for her benefit. None of this did Suse know, nothing even of the hoard of bank-notes in the teapot. If she had she would have been very angry with the old man for stinting himself to enrich her-for Suse was, indeed, his child. She had inherited his unselfishness and his generosity of temperament. Having possessed himself of the notes, old Andre sat down by the fire to count them. The amount was satisfactory— a thousand francs: forty pounds in English money. It was his yearly allowance, and he had intended to have invested it ere this, bufc illness had overtaken him. He returned to the teapot, locked it carefully away, tied up the remainder, placed the sum inside his pillow, and finally, utterly exhausted and chilled, crept back to bed. He had scarcely accomplished this when he once more heard a heavy footfall on the stairs. Mathilde had returned. Good, worthy Mathilde. Old Andre's surprise was great; it was only equalled by his pleasure at seeing her, for be was very weak and ill. "I could not go home, and leave you like this," she said. "I sent the charrette by a good-natured girl, who has promised to see to the children. My man is away, working on Merriniont Farm for a few days. Dien! Pete Andre, you do look white, and the soup won't be ready for hours. Coffee and cognac, that will keep you up!" i "Rut Paul!" he asked. "Is there any newwP" "News! Of course," said Mathilde, busying herself the while making some coffee from a tin she found on the mantelshelf. "Do you think I should have been away all this time except to inquire about M. Pa.ul i'" "Bon! And the news of him?" Not encouraging, mon virus. His thigh is broken. It is an affair of weeks. Pauvre diable "But he will recover?" Yes, yes, only he may be lame for life." Poor Paul! Poor little Suse! And I caa do so little!" Mademoiselle Suse does not know about the lameness. It is of no use to tell her all the malheurs at one time. Come, M. Andht. here is the coffee; unless you have some cognac here, I must fetch some." On the little shelf above your head a tiny oottie-" It was only just in time, for Andre, from weakness and emotion, was nearly fainting. Mathilde's mixture revived him, butQie was totally incapable of eating the huge slice of bread which she pressed him to do. Once again he asked for Suse. She is coming soon," was the answer. They won't let her stop at the hospital; and the Patronne at the Rue Vivienne Bays that she is to come to you. When she comes, I will go home, so rest content, mon vienx; all will turn out for the beet. Even if K. Paul is lame, he can print." When at last Suse arrived and good. motherly Mathilde started for her home the notes from under Andre's pillow were given to the child." Suse cried her heart out over the old grand. perc's mnnificence, thinking the while how he muet have deprived himself for her sake and wondering how he had majiaged to get so much money. Of the pension left him by his late master, even now; Suse heard no word, nor how, since she was only eight years old when the Comte died, it had accumulated into a big sum. The days that followed were for the most part very sad and drear, gladdened though they v.ere by kindliness and a total want of self-consideration. Mathilde was a constant visitor, and, thanks to her care. old Andre was beginning to pun round; her efforts, too. were aided by the old man's keen desire to live so that Suae might be the richer. At last, after many weary months, Paul left the hospital, and not until then did Snee learn the terrible truth that he would never walk a sum, eave with the assistance of A crutch, or, at beet, a stick. She would marry him at once; marry him and nurse him, was Suse's decision, and it was echoed by Andre; only Paul thought that since he could not work, it was wronc to marry Suse; but he was owr-roled. Tho cure made every arrangement for bba to lie carried into church amd married in the early morning, before curious idlers would be about. Mathilde and old Andre, who could now manage to get about a little. were the only witnesses. All the thoughts of the cottage at Asnieres must be given up for a while: hot Suse said they would all three live together, and be very happy for all that. She, of course, rcAlined ber position as premiere in the Maieon F-ournie; and although it was some months before Panl was alile to go book to wori,, a;nd he was always deiicaite ami ail ins. yet., thanks to Straes salary and the mav-ince of the little old man of the BatignoUee. tbo pot au feu. was never unfilled, and a heALr" welcome and a. good meal were alwan &WSW ing oomrucra Mathilde.
