-1 I PERSONAL PARS. i
I PERSONAL PARS. I SVEN DSEN, of Neath, | Has been asked to play for Llanelly. !w. STOYLE, Cilfynydd's w. TOYLE: CilfyddJs Kigrtit centre, is regarded as a centre or read merrt, and has rendered f'plcIIdid service for his team. I" PONTY" JON ES, Pontypool, Has improved wonderfully in his tacklilg this season, and no one who saw him bring down the Tredegar men will hold him up to any further reproach as a weak tackier. I HOWEl JONES, Neath, Is 5ft. lOin., last. Tlb., and 22 years old. He is of splendid physique, and a very dangerous man when he once gets into his stride. He is the son of Mr. John Jones, of the Ange-l Hotel, Pont-Neath-Vaughan. R. L. EVANS, the 'Tillery Captain, is just now showing much improved form. R L. breaks hIoughin fine style, and, what is just as important, transfers to his wiag at the proper time. Evans also tackles well, and is plucky to a degree. JACK STEPHENS, Neath, Is a native of Resolven, where be works as a collier. He is a fine-built fellow, and a. strong runner, if not particularly fast. He is a goad centre, and a fine defensive player. Stephens is a capital kick, and is very smart in breaking through. W. TAYLOR, Abercarn, Who fiifured so prominently in the Tredegar quartette both last season and the present one, has returned to his own team at Abercarn, and will make a strong addition to the backs. He shows great da'sh and speed, and is a clover, all-round player. PETER TRACEY, the Barry I Forward, who recently played for Barry United and 1 Porth, has returned to Barry, where he is working. Teter played one match for the district, and will pro- babty figure in their ranis for the rest of the season. He is a splendid outside left, and a better partner to I A. German could not be found. W. THOMAS, the Brynmawr I Recruit hali-baclt, is a wonderful little player, and I hits it off in great style with Dai Beynon, who has ten up the outside position. Thomas is very small, but he is grit personified, has a thorough knowledge of the game, is quick to roe and take advantage of an opening, and a great future is predicted for this plucky little player. P. S. BLAND, Newport, I The ex-Gloucester forwapl, has now apparently g a I permanent place in the pack of the Newport first fifteen. For the greater part of the season he played I for the second team. He is a thoroughly consistent worker in the scrimmage, with not much dazzling wing play. Out in South Africa Bland showed all and sundry the science and practice of the noble art in a way which commended him to every true sportsman. ORLANDO WINMILL. Abertillery. Who recently donned the Tillery jersey after & spell of retirement, is now playing a grand game, and is, without question, one of the best forwards in the MOID- monthshire Leag-je to-day. Although quite young, Orlando has retired a oouple of times, but the fascina- tion of the game has been too much for him, and after a spell as spectator he has gladly rushed into the thick of it once more. Finely built, with a splendid know- ledge of the game, Winmill is a forward worth having, aad it fe to be hoped he won't tll. k of retiring: again for a good many seasons to come.

FOOTBALLSKTCHESI
FOOTBALLSKTCHESI "TIGERS" WITH THEIR TAILSI DOWN I I Poor Play and Heavy I Scor ing (By "ÅRD.") I Once again I rtaim the sympathy of all in- dulgent people in being called upon to write something about what is more or less nothing. The season is about exhausting itself, and this series of sketches are precious near the vanishing point. There is only one pleasure in subscribing this one, and that is the know- ledge that it is the last but one. Football, as a literary subject, has become stale, and to me it is something more-a vexatiün of spirit. Players are tired of playing, talkere are tired of talking, and writers are tired of writing. To carry the game right to the end ref is overdoing the thing, and he will be a vise, benevolent nan who will persuade the Welii Football Union to apply the closure at Eaeter. The Easter Wednesday match ought to be "positively the last" of the season, and there ought to be jufct a brief interregnum, a breatJiing space, between football and cricket. Under the present arrangement the former enchroach-es upon the latter, and in some places football and cricket will be played on the same day before the month is out. There is no rhyme or reason in such a condition of things. One would have no objection to a charity match being played here and there. Next Saturday, for instance, George Boote will take the Newport team down to Bridsrend to play a. match in aid of the club of that town, and the captain of the Usksiders can only be appraised for his kindness in giving a helping -=: 1-H F- -.Tic,e- ;R is "E:R i) I f-r R r,, oc, k4 T. hand to a struggling organisation that would probably have been delunct but for the vita- lising energy and steadfast loyalty of one man whose initials are "T.D.S." Mr. W. M. Doug- last is also doing a, good turn to Pontypriri-i by taking the Cardiff team to play the GoaJ- opolitaiib on the ')Jh iust, and it is ta I* hoped in' the interests of peace and goodwill that this will be the inauguration of a better understanding between at least one of the leading clubs and the less pretentious orga- nisationsof the Rhondda. This match wiil. unfortunately, be divested of much of its inte- rest by the enforced absence of Gvyn Jsichoilg, whose football career may. possibly, be at an end. It is the sincere hope of everyone, of course, that NicholLs will feel so much rejuvenated by the time next season has come round that he will a?ain turn out and re??u;?lE? a position which cannot be adequately ?led. Men of NicholLs' stamp are so rare that we cannot part with them without a pang. He has been .dead out of luck this season but, li?e King Arthur of old. he may come again and find himself in betr favour with the gods- Of cour.alJ. this has nothing to -do with last Saturday's match, but, to be qmte'nm. did', I am purposely avoiding that subject, because the exhibition of football given wa-s so poor that it will not stand comment at any length- In the first place, the Leicester team was the weakest ever seen on the Cardiff Arms Park, and the least representative of the real strength of Leicester football One of the spectators who was sitting behind me said to his friend at half-time, "Fancy these chape winning the Midlands Cup." It was a case of "other," and not "these." chaps. W. Jones, the Cardiff veteran, was brought into the I Leicester team as an emergency man, while Peter Lockman, of Swansea, act-ed as cust-o- dian. At one time Lockman guve promise of being the worthy suorcesor of Bancroft, but on the old warrior's retirement George Davies came on the scene and Lockman has been in obscurity ever since. He is evidently not the player he was a few years ago. Playing on a. beaten side, W. Jones had no opportunity of doing what he might have done. except in the way of tackling, and he did this effec- tively. TlttfVS PICK \} \'> o m TTAF- RIJN, AT* RALf'WR V, ft KtT IE.Z'4T O-Z -'SCOQ.F 2 c 0 ol F-!is Up to the point of George Northmore'e retirement with an injured shoulder, the Car- 1 diff forwards fairly outplayed the Leicester eight, both in the tight and in the loose. Thi? superiority in front meant the giving of the neoeasary opportunities to the backs, and tries came apaoe. Raving made certain of the Midlands Cup, which they have secured this season for the seventh time in succession, the Tigers let their tails drop and did not care a jot how many tries were scored against them. Their forwards were big and power- ful enough to have done better, but they seemed to have no stomach for a hard, gruelling game. They had won the cup, and that cup had evidently been filled after the manner of all other cups. It is a coincidence that Cardiff should hare scored the same number of points in both matches with Leicester thie se&80n, namely, 24. Whereas the score at Leicester was four goals (one penaltv) and t-v-o tries, the score on turday was two goals (one dropped) and five tries. At Leicester, where the TigeNJ" were at full strength and played on their own ground, the Cardiff line was not crossed at all, but last week. when the Leicester team was a. comparatively feeble one. the Cardiff defence was beaten twice. This was due chiefly to the lanka-daisical spirit in which the Cardiff men played after establishing a safe lead, and to the falling off in the play of the pack after George Northmore had re- turned to the dressing-room. Northmore, by the way, has proved himself one of the most consistent and not the low skilful forward who has played for Cardiff during the past few eeaaons, and his value was shown by his absence. He is always a worker in the scrums, and knows, as a rule, what to do in the open. Brice and Smith were missed, although their subetitute8 were triere all through. Brice, as we all know, is now the central figure in an interesting little ormtroverpy with Mr. Crawford Findlay. So far. he has declined to apologise, and he is perfectly justified in his attitude on the ground of bis declaration that be did lnot. use the words attributed to him. His word, as he righ-ijv oleums, is 31s good as that of Mr. Pindlay. and be will he less than the man he has oroved himself to be on the football fteld if he- apologises for what he did not say. As a matter of coitamon justice, he ought to hare been invited by the jugtice, T?nion to give an explanation. Instead ?f that, be has condemned without being heard. One can understand the position of the Welsh Union, of course, in being anxious 1 to avoid any unpleasantness? with the Scottish Union through Mr. Oawford Findlay, but their first and most obvious dusty is to be just. j There is no more Madtenified eoectacie tibeuij t,hal o' any man or any Union taking his or its kicking lying down, and the kicker is the best, able to realise it. This. again, is not germane to the issue," as a witness once remarked in the police- court. but all I would add concerning the mate. is that the most exhilarating incident was the great run by which Dr. Timms scored the last try.
I HINTS AND -CRITICISMS.
HINTS AND CRITICISMS. I By "Old Heathen." Pontlottyn over-played Merthyr Tale in tlua return league engagement on the former's enclosure. Very early Willie Boon, the ex- Cardiff Corinthian, beat the defence with & I low shot that seemed to stagger the visiting keeper, for that worthy utterly failed to deal with it. Tom Huxtable, another Cardiffian, steered another through before the interval. In the second half Huxtabie headed the third. and then the visiting right wing managed to bea-t Randall Owen, the midget goalkeeper, II with an oblique stroke. the retaliation by Pontlottyn's outside right was prompt after Boon had repeatedly distinguished himself, but. Merthyr scored again on time, Pont- lottyn ultimately winning by four to two. From all accounts \Yyndham« Stars thoroughly deserved their narrow win over I Canton Weslevans, although the margin was only obtained in the closing stage of the game. There is a deal of merit to be accorded to the winners apart from the victory, for they have plodded on week after week, aye, month after month, to inlfil the fixtures which they too well knew wouid increase the adverse average of goals. Now they have borne reward for their perseverance, but where all have done so finely it would be invidious to individualise, and I, for one. refuse to attempt to do so. Unexpectedly, perhaps, thf Bevan 8hidd final proved an easy task for Riverside. Ha from kick-off to no-side they evinced the liveliest liking for their opponents quarters, imd, judging from some impartial criticisms sent to me by fricnas, Barry Dock AlWona never held the famlest chance of a victory atter the Eiverians had equaii&ed the smart score by Bamford for the seatiiders. Previous to this Cantsr and ilansfora found the net with infringement shots. A tinge of roughness marred the p)ay for a while, but, I will not mention the allenders, as the game ended in better spirit. Suffice to say that VViehard and Hansford each scored, and tia" Nash augmented with f.o others—the first trom Clinking combination with Kyd and. < Lowrie, and the last by a penalty shot. This was the last match on the Riverians programme, and they must be very jubilant with their wind-up. Ever since Christmas the team hits made a remarkable recovery ia form, and they have now won fifteen matches. Harry Dock Aioions have the comfort of knowing that they are the ooly team to score against Riverside in the Snieid competition. lar. Bardsley Wilson attributes the present MTtHiilion of the c'.ub tc the skill andfaithful- rness of the captain iC, Kydi. F. Johnson. W. Wive h. and Williams among others, but I rather fancy that his modesty has prevented him mentioning the most important member of the c-lub-the secretary. Without Mr. Wil- son's services tiie club would have remained in Queer-street." Exception has been taken by Boath to the oontributad comment on their match with Canton Parish Church. The secretary points out that his team were without Dunn, Mackic, and their crack forward, Lewis, and the absence of the players mentioned is to me sufficient testimony that the second division champions were a crippled side before starting, for I know the calibre and capabilities of the trio. Further com- ment will be found in brief among Korner Kicks." went under t<) Boath again to Boath again last Saturday, Baidy and. Nickolson scoring a goal each against them.
