[By Special Arrangement.- Copyright. VIOLET MERION'S DILEMMA, I By MARY H. TENNYSON. Author of "The Old Church Clock," "Let-me- look-a-t-the^tongue," "A Sinless Sinner," "A Cruel Dilemma," Ac. It vras a raw-cold November afternoon, and I the prospect from the station at S- seemed to Violet Merion about the most dismal she had ever looked upon. The station was a mile out of the town, and as the dusk had already fallen, she could see before her nothing but a straight, insufficiently-lighted road, covered with a cindery black dust. The girl was slight and elegant, and her face was unusually refined and charming, but the quietness of her costume was almost severe; her long, dark-grey ulster and thickly- veiled black-ribboned sailor hat being relieved by no fleck of colour. In her left hand the carried an inconveniently heavy hand-bag, her umbrella hanging on her wrist, and in her right was a substantial dog-chain, which was wound tightly and painfully round her glove, that she might the better control the irrepressible spirits of the vigorous fox-terrior, who, at the eight of the road, plunged and reared wildly in his ineffectual efforts to get free, after the tedium of the long protracted journey, which had lasted from eight o'clock in the morning But although her delicate hand was bruised with the rough chain, Violet knew from dearly-bought experience, that with a search for lodgings before her in a strange town, to let Nettle free for an instant would be the height of madness. Once she had done so, and he had darted off on his own pleasures intent, and she had lost him for over an hour, and to lose Nettle would be an unbear- able misfortune. For, although Violet Merion travelled in a theatrical troupe in which there were three other ladies as well as the star actress whom they all supported, it could not be said she had any friend among them, and but for the companionship of her affectionate, but disobedient, terrier she would have been lonely indeed. But although, as a rule, Violet, put up with an almost philosophical caimness of mind, with the numerous discomforts incidental to her position, this particular afternoon she was thoroughly depressed, and more than a little angry. Two unpleasant incidents had occurred during the tedious journey, and at the recollection of them the girl's cheeks flushed hotly, and the short, well-cut upper lip curled with ineffable disdain. The company included among its members the eldest son of an earl—on the bills known as Mr. Lennox—a frivolous and innately un- refined young fellow, consumed with vanity, and utterly incapable from a histrionic point of view. But the noble lord, being the possessor of some thousands a year, his Incapacity was no hindrance to his entering the profession. Nor did his meanpess uf character and blatant self-ooncei render him unpopular in the society he was thrown amongst; for a man who could stand unlimited drinks and cigars, even although his generous impulses were very few and far between, might be sure that his short-comings would be regarded very indulgently. Violet Merion, however, had an intense dislike for the young lordling, who, by what she considered quite a cruel degree of Fate, was cast to enact her lover in every piece in the repertoire, and on that journey matters had come to a crisis between them. Going into the refreshment buffet at one of the stations, she had encountered the obnoxious young aristocrat, at the moment engaged in a violent flirtation with the attendant who served him with the cham- pagne he was gulping down. Seeing Violet, he had come up to her with insolent familiarity, and, hooking his arm in hers, had drawn her towards the counter. Enraged and disgusted, the girl shook her- self free, and without a word, hastening from the saloon, had taken refuge among the other ladies in the train. Thither the irate Mr. Lennox followed her, and thrusting his heavy, foolish face into the carriage window, declared she had insulted him by cutting him, and that he would find a means of repaying her. His tone was brutal, and the dog, concealed by his mistress's rug, uttered a sharp growl. At this Mr. Lennox's coarse lips broadened into a smile, and with a laugh he slouched away. A minute after the guard appeared. "The dog's ticket, please?'' Nettle had no ticket. For months he had been smuggled in and out of the train, and the officials, always indulgent in such cases, had shut their eyes. But in this instance they were bound to act, and Violet, with tremblng lips and flashing eyes, made no protest, although, having paid fifteen shillings for Nettle's ticket, she had only a solitary copper left in her purse. "That was Lord Billy's way of paying you, dp-a,r," the soubrette of the company laughed. "I saw him speak to the guard. My word! I shouldn't like to be in that young man's bad books. My advice is keep friends with him. "I'll never speak to him again, Violet cried. "He's a cad! A disgrace to his class and his profession." The other ladies drew down their lips; the girl's tono was distinctively offensive to them. They said no more, however, contenting themselves with completely ignoring her for the remainder of the journey. It happened all the others were married women, and for once a sense of forlormiess came over Violet as she saw them leave the station in little groups, each couple sharing the load of rugs and bags, which was all the luggage they had brought, as they were only to remain in the smaJl town for two nights. The star and her husband had driven off in a carriage sent by a friend in the neighbour- hood, whose guests they were to be, and Violet was quite alone and uncared for when at last she started down the road towards the town. Nettle tugged and made desperate darts forward, and she ohid him angrily. But presently her heart smote her, and then putting down her heavy bag-, she stopped a minute and patted his smooth head. "You couldn't help it, Nettle," she murmured; "it wasn't your fault,\old fellow. But he's a hateful wretch! I haven't a farthing of change now; only that five-pound note at the bottom of the bag. Oh, I'm tired and miserable. I dread my work to-night with that horror. Good Heavens! five o'clock! And I must be at the theatre at half-past six and no lodgings!" For an hour the girl tra.mped up and down, but nowhere could she find a room. The last theatrical company had left the town without paying, and at the first mention of the theatre doors had been shut in her face in every direction. It had begun to rain, too. She had no hand to hold up an umbrella, and her arms shook with the weight of the bag and the incessant pulling of the unruly dog. At last, with a groan of utter weariness, she stopped in the middle of a poor street, the counterpart, it seemed to her, of a dozen others she had already searched. "I must try the hotel," she muttered. "I've only half an hour now, but perhaps they wouldn't take Nettle. At this moment a door opened, and a cheery- faced woman came out on the step. "You don't know of any respectable lodgings about here, I suppose?'' Violet faltered, trying to keep the moisture out of her anxious eyes. The woman glanced quickly a.t the sensitive, tired face. The unspoken appeal in the eyes went to her heart at once, and nva I minutes later the girl sank into a 7?=ftle3 1 a splendid kitchen fire and burst into tears. "There, there," the other said, "dmlt cry, rrus<5, it'll be all right, now. Of course, yo. can have my giri's room, and welcome. She's gone up to London for a week's sight-seeing, and I'll look after the dog for you. Come, now, you drink a cup of hot tea, and you shall have a good supper when you come home. Mr. Smith, that's my husband, won't be home till eleven; he works late at the railway. I'll walk with you to the theatre to show you the way, so that you'll know how to come back. These streets are so much alike, they confuse strangers. Violet had but time to swallow the tea. and refresh herself by a wash before it waa incumbent on her to start again. But the woman's kindness had cheered her; and when she parted from her at the stage door she was able to smile brightly as she put Nettle's chain into her hand. "I shall be home as soon as possible," she said, "and I shall be ready for supper, I'm sure. I've had nothing but that piece of bread and butter tince twelve o'clock this morning." The evening was an especially trying one, Lord Billy being slightly inebriated as well as morosely uncivil. On their final exit, how- ever, he appeared to wake out of his apathy, and with a brutal grin suddenly put out splay foot, and deliberately treading on the gauzy train of her white gown, caused a rent of a yard wide, and then staggered unsteadily away, with his bullet-head between hia hunchy shoulders, which shook with ill- suppressed merriment. There were tears of rage and mortification in Violet's eyes, and she bit her lips in the effort to control herself as her companions of the dressing-room offered their insincere sympathy, the while their eyes danced with mischievous enjoyment of her discomfiture. The girl was not popular; she was con- sidered proud and exclusive. Moreover, she had more than once shown ber contempt for the open court that was paid to Lord Billy, and that she should buffer some humilation at his hands was by no means disagreeable to her lady companions. "Well, darling, you'll have to sew that up, anyway," one of them remarked. "It is a. shame! It looks almost as if he did it on purpose, too. It'll ravel all the way down, if you don't catch it together, dear, at any rate." One by one they quitted the cold, barn-like, evil-smelling dressing-room, but Violet still struggled to repair the serious injuries in her pretty new gown caused by the callous man's impertinence. The light was bad, and her tired eyes smarted. Her fingers, too, were cold, and shook with weariness and cuilling mortification,' and yet she was aware any complaint against Mr. Lennox would ba ignored. It was more than suspected he had paid for the position he occupied in the com- pany, and his explanation that the occurrence was accidental would undoubtedly be accepted at once. "It's degrading," she murmured, the tears rising in her eyes. "It is such men as he who lower the tone of the sta.ge. Thank goodness, uiat s done at last," she cried, rising and making preparations for leaving. "Oh, what a comfort it is I came across Mrs. Smith. I'll fix my thoughts on her and on that kitchen iirc. I'm nearly .famished. I hope they'll give me my supper by that fire. I'm sure I shall not mind Mr. ;Smith. I prefer Natures noblemen to the other sort, taking Mr. Leu- no x as a type of his class." Slis was hastily putting on her sailor hat, when the caretaker knocked at the door to asked if he might put out the lights. "It's nearly half-past eleven, miss, and r wants to get home," he grumbled. "Don't you live here?" she inquired, thrust- ing her arms into her ulster. "No, this theatre ain't often used, and I don't liva on the premises. Look sharp, please, miss." Buttoning up her coat as she went, the girl left the room, and groping her t way through the passage went out. into the s ;c t. The cold had increased, and now, instead of rain, snow was falling heavily. She was still putting up her umbrella when the caretaker came out, and locking the door strode off quickly. In a minute he dis- appeared round a corner, and Violet found herself alone in the long, deserted High- street. Not a gleam of light showed in any of the windows. Even the taverns had closed half an hour before. But in the distance two bright lamps indicated the situation of the one respectable Hotel of S——. "What a wretched place," she muttered. "Oh, dear! how thankful I shall be to get to my bed to-night. Well, I've had a long day of it. I was up at eix this morning, packing." Facing the wind she walked a few steps, and then, with a sharp exclamation of actual dread, she came to an abrupt stop, and stag- gering on her feet giddily, tottered to the wall and leant up against it, while her cheeks grew suddenly of ashen whiteness, and her lips began to quiver convulsively. "Oh, no, no," she murmured, piteously, "it would be too horrible. How could I have been so completely idiotic? But I was so rushed and so afraid of being late. Good Heavens! What shall I do if I can't recog- nise the street? But I won't think of that, I won't think of anything so truly awful." The clock in the Town-hall was striking twelve when once more Violet Merion emerged into the desolate High-street. Her mouth was haggard, and in her distended eyes was a feverish gleam. She walked stiffly and slowly, and her boots were already soaked with the icy; slush of thawed snow.. "I must go to the hotel," she muttered, thickly; "there is no help for it. I have no money, but I can pay in the morning. I couldn't drag myself to the station, and very likely they don't keep open all night. Oh. those terrible, lonely, dark streets, with no ray of light from any window to give one courage." The door of the hotel was being closed aa tho girl stumbled up the steps, and the waiter regarded her with an air of open sus- picion as. hoarse with apprehension, she asked whether she could be accommodated with a bedroom and supper. "Well, I don't know," he said, rudely. "We don't take in promiscuous ladies without lug- gage at this time of night." "I am a member of the company at the theatre," she faltered. "Oh; then how is it you didn't come sooner?" "I have done a yery foolish thing," the Ttoftt girl explained, striving vainly to appear calm. "I secured lodgings this afternoon, but I came away from them without taking the address, and I cannot recognise the stmet; they are so exactly alike. I only know the landlady is-a Mrs. Smith." "Oh, really! Quite an uncommon nmne that!" the man replied, with an open sneer. "And you say you are one of the ladies at the theatre?" "I ajn," the girl answered, faintly. With a shrug of the shoulders he went airay, and in a moment returned, followed by Mr. Lennox, obviously in an advanced stage of intoxication. "Do you know this 'ere lydy, my lord?" the waiter asked. The young fellow lifted his sodden eyes to the agitated face, and then, with an evil smile, he drawled slowly and indistinctly: "No, waiter; ITe not the pleasure of the lady's acquaintance." The girl shrank away, but she had not the strength to expostulate, and in another minute the door was closed upon her, and the lights extinguished. Then, standing at the bottom of the steps, Violet Merion clung to the railings. "My God!" she moaned. "I shall die. There is no one to help me. I cannot feel the ground, my feet are so numbed." Faint and exhausted, her brain reeling and her sight dimmed, she staggered aimlessly forward a few steps, and then from the back she received a sudden shock; something seemed to spring upon her, and with a stifled scream she fell on her face and lost conscious- nesa. On recovering her senses. Violet Merion found herself lying on a mattress before the splendid fire in Mrs. Smith's kitchen. Pressed up against her side, quivering with anxiety, his head in her hand, was Nettle, and bending over her Mrs. Smith, and also a grave-faced man in a blue uniform. "Thank God, miss," the woman cried, "you've come to. Smith said as it was only a faint. I was for sending for a doctor. It was that dear, blessed dog who found you. He was howling over you fit to raise the dead when Smith come up to you. He'd givenùfll the slip, blel his heart, and Smith was after him; and well he did, for but for him you might have lain there for hours and caught your death. Now, then, here's some hot soup and some brandy, and then straight off to a warm bed you go. Smith, he picked you up and carried you home right enough." Violet was only a little the worse the next day, and she often said afterwards tftat her wretched erperience was something of a bless- ing in disguise, for Mr. Lennox never dared to show his face again in the theatre.
