Half a century has wrought marvels: no- where greater than in the sea life; but the transformation hcus been achieved at the expense of effectually driving all the romance out of the deep. When I roll my mental vision inwards and gasse down the long, shadowy galleries of memory at the dim phantoms which graced the ocean in my youth, my pulse is, quickened by those asso- ciations of the past, to which the Lea-writeri of to-day still has to turn for inspiration and for interest. I know that steam is a fine thing, and I know that it is a great con- veiiience to be borne, with railway precision, to the ends of the earth in a floating hotel; but your old shellback-: is the most con- servative creature in the world; and whilst he is quite capable of appreciating utility, you may forgive his sigh for the departed glamour of his calling. But if I am going to spin my yarn I must belay kinking the strands of it in this fashion ere I get them into a tangle. The Wave was one of the loveliest and swiftest models that was ever wafted by wide-spread pinions of canvas across the Antillean sea. She had originally been built as a Cuban slaver; was captured in the Middle Passage by a British frigate, which succeeded in wingmg her just as she was drawing out of range; and being carried to Jamaica, was con- demned. At that period the edict command- ing slavers captured by our men-of-war to be sawn in a halves was not in force, so the Sabrina, as she was then named, was pur- chased into the Royal Navy, to aid in the suppression of the traffic in which she had taken so notorious a part. Her ordnance consisted of a long twenty-four pounder, mounted on a traversing carriage forward and five brass carronades of a side, with an extremely useful swivel on each quarter. Eighty-seveil hearties swung their hammocks in the 'tween-decks, where the slaves' quarters had formerly been, and found not any too much rooan in a space that had been intended to contain one thousand crouching, manacled blacks. Our commander, Lieutenant Lavrock, was a typical British Naval officer of fifty years ago; a stumpy, squarely-bniit, thick-necked man, with a face of the complexion of underdone beef, and about as resolute and intrepid a seaman as ever reverenced the name of Nelson and swore by the honour of his flag. Tom Cringle knew tha type well. We had been out from Port Royal about ten days, having sailed with instructions to go down to reward in quest of a pimticjtl felucca, named the Elira, which was known to be playing havoc among the merchantmen, ttu<j, had, os plenty of occasions, given her heels to a rather heavy corvette, which, for mere decency of appearances rather than for the remotest chance she had. gave chafie to the nimble ocean thief. In the 'forties piracy was still very rife in West Indian waters, and the traditions of the Tortugas and the Cnbjf Alain was yet a living reality. The Elmira had last been heard of off Bavanah-la-mar, where she boarded a French barque, took everything of value out of her, secured the crew under hatches, and sent her adrift with square yards and half-a-dozen auger holes in her bilge. She was happily fallen in with by the corvette I have before spoken of. and two hours after her imprisoned occupants had been rescued she sank. This little incident was a clue to the calibre of the gentry with whom we had to deal. We got under way in the early morning from an anchorage where we had brought up for the night, and a fine sailing breeze carried us well to leeward ere it died out with the setting of the sun. It fell a sultry, stirleea evening, the blue shadow of the high Jamaica, land hovering in the violet air leagues away over our starboard quarter, and the ocean stretching in a burnished surface to the hazy horizon, streaked here aud there with long. creeping g-waithes of subtly stealing current. The sun went down to the western sea-line, rayless and magnified to huge pro- portions, palpitating like a • living heart in the smoky mists which his own heat drew ull" and dipped to his resting-place without cast- ing a. glimmer of reflective glow 011 the violet I water that brimmed to the lower limb of his crimson circle. Our schooner lay motionless in the midst of the great hush which fell with the dying of the day, her white canvas seem- ing to quiver in the invisible steam swimming round about her spars, and the shape of her hull mirrored beneath her symmetric bends as faithfully as though she was set in a vast sheet of Saving the dim and distant streak of the coast, nothing broke the con- tinuity of the sea circle. The sun vanished, and simultaneously our ensign dropped from the peak. Twilight lingers but briefly in these parallels, and very soon the sea, had turned of an ebony hue, with a clear heaven of indigo overhead, glimmering with myriads of stars. It was. indeed, a marvellously line tropical night, but whew, how hot This calm was not to prove of long duration, how- ever. Before eight bells-bad chimed out the end of the dog-watch, a soft breeze from the north-east was keeping the pallid shapes of the sails silent and swelling, and raising a. pleasant fountain-like murmur of passing foam bells. It was just the weather for a ¡. slaver, constructed to hold her own in shy winds; and when I went below to turn-in the Wave was slipping through it at the rate of some seven knots in the hoar, with promise of doing better yet in the gradually increas- ing slope of her hull. I cams on'deck again at four o'clock in the morning, and found that the breeze.had been dying away for an hour previously, and it was nearly a stark calm again. A narrow horn of moon ftoat.ed low down upon its back, like a silver gondola, over the port-quarter. When I stepped on to the quartcr-dcck I found Lieutenant Lavrock there, in conversation with the officer of the watch, and as I came within earshot I heard the latter exclaim: It certainly looks like a vessel on fire, sir." Both of then! were staring earnestly ahead, and following the direction of their eyes— which I could perceive plainly enough in the sheen coming from the binnacle lamp-I hc- held a glimmering tort of light, dead on end with our jibboom, but whether one mile or ten distant I could not have told, so illusive it was. We -were running nearly right before the wind, which, of course, still diminished the weight of it, and our speed at this time could not have exceeded four knots. "I think it must be nearer to us than you fancy," I heard the Lieutenant say. The light has grown a deal brighter within the last ten minute;s." Just then a voice from the forecastle came floating along in subdued tones, calling to the quarter-deck. Hallo answered the Commander. There's somebody hailing us. sir." Hailing us Where away ? I heard nothing." "I can't properly tell, your honour, but the sound seems to come right off the water over the bows. Ha the plot thickens. A man hailing us! Heard you anything, Mr. Richards ?" Nothing, sir." Ilearkee, then, for a moment or two." He had scarcely fallen into a listening posture when I plainly caught the sound of I a faint, reedy hallo, coming from Heaven alone knew where off the black water. The cry had a weird, unearthly effect to my fancy, sounding as it did out of the mystery of the night. There, sir!" exclaimed Richards. I heard it," replied Lieutenant Lavrock. "Fok'sle there! Keep a bright look-out and report if you see anything like a boat. Get a deck-lantern lighted, and hitch it a ftank or two up the forestay." This was done, and the large globular lamp cast a bright glow over the forepart of the schooner. "Several Times 'during the next few minutes was the hail repeated, growing louder ond more distinct, which proved we were approach- :ng the spot whence it came. The light, ahead also continued to brighten and enlarge. It wavered and flickered, after the manner of flames heavily obscured by smoke, and I made no doubt that it was a burning vessel. Then the mysterious hailing voice fell silent for a long time, and I was beginning to fancy that we should hear no more of it, till on a sudden it sounded again with startling- distinctness right under our bows: "Ship ahoy! For Heaven's sake pick me up!" Pipe away the gig's crew," exclaimed Lieutenant Lavrock, with as much sang froid as though incidents of this nature were the merest common-places of sea routine..The boatswain's whistle chirruped, and with the alacrity of British bluejackets the boat that hung at the davits over the tafrail was manred and waterborne. The schooner's helm wa= put down. and she came up into the wind, her canvas rippling in ghostly folds. Presently the gig returned, floating shadowly under the courrter; oars were tossed, fall- blocks hooked on, and up she came to the davits again. Have you got the man?" inquired Lieuten- ant Lavrock. ■ mini muni— "Aye. ye, sir," replied the Quartermaster, who bred -one in charge. "Here he is, air." The rays of the binnacle-hunn streamed fair upon the little group, revealing their figures and face?. The rescued man was a fisherman-looking fellow. His hair lay in a. :-aturated mass npou his brow, and his soak- ing clotliee clung to him like pulp. "Who are you?" inquired the Lieutenant. "I belong to yonder vessel, the Orange Girl. of Kew Orleans, answered the fellow, with a Yankee accent. "What, is wrong with her? She looks OR fire." "I allow she is, mister. I'll just tell you the yarn. About three bells in the middle watch I was on the look-out, when I thought I spied a sort of smudge to wind'ard; and staring a bit, made it out to be a sail heading: our way. Our mate hailed her, but got no answer. The stranger came blowing a Jong like the shadow of a cloud through the gloom. I reckoned that those aboard tvf her didn't see us, for never a notion did I have of her real character. We shifted our helm, hailing again, but 00 she came. steering alongside abreast of the gangway, and before we could cry out our decks were swarming with, shadowy men, flitting fore and aft, with t^ie glint of steel amongst 'em. They made no 110i.se. It. was the neatest job of boarding ever done. As the vessel drove clear again I made her out to be a felucca. The mate cried out: 'Death, iiieit' We're boarded by }JiratG. But. in an instant he was felled to the deck. I've heard a bit, mister, about the monstrous cruelties of these here West Indian pirates- walking the plank, roasting alive, and the likes of tllat-and sooner than fall into their clutches I preferred to throw myself over- board. taking my chance of the slfhrks, which I guess are pretty thick in these here waters. So I springs on to the taffrail, i'lip1'\ the toggle out of a lifebuoy, and plumps down souse into the wake. How long I Icy afloat before J spied the lights of this craft coming up I can't say, I'm .-tire. I kept quiet as death, so as not to make -.ny splash that might attract sharks. The, murdering1 villains! Every dollar I own in the world is in my cea-chest, away down in yonder hooker's fok'sle. That's the yarn, mister. Yes, they've set her afire right enough, curse their souls! And folding his arms savagely, thereby causing a stream of water -to trickle from his sodden sleeves into the pool at his feet, he fell to muttering under his breath. called Lieutenant. Lavrock, softly, but with suppressed excitement vibrating through his tones, pa*is the word for ajl hands. No piping; let everything be done quietly." Swiftly the men came up from below, and fell in at their stations. There was the rattle of carronade wheels, accompanied by the dull thud of ramming. You beard the light clash of a musket butt-ended upon the deck, or the twang of a cutlass tested by the man who grasped it. We were rapidly approaching tho burning Vessel ahead. The flames had evidently gained but a small hold on her as yet, and she made a trifling bJazo; yet the sea for a mile around showed out in the crim- son glow, and within this sphero there was no sign of the felucca. We held on till within half a mile of the burning craft, creeping stealthily, though swiltly, on to the impulse of the soft, warm breeze. The helm was then put hard down, and the bchooner rounded into the eye of the wind, and came to a standstill with her canvas lightly rippling. "Mr. Maud' exclaimed Lieutenant Lav- rock to the youthful officcr who was second in command, "take the cutter with a board- ing party of twenty men and go and overhaul yonder vessel. "Aye, aye. sir," was the reply. The orders were given, and swiftly, but noiselessly, executed. The cutter sank from the davits into the black water alongside, end the men were told off. I was among thooe selected. We shoved off from the Wave's side, and to the strong, steady sweep of four paira of oars glided rapidly across the intervening space of '-water. The burning ship was ail abaek, her sails glowing crimson, with ruddy shadows creeping over them. As soon as we had got clear of the schooner she filled again and stnoid away to the ft out toward. I guessed her mission well enough. c' 'Vast rowing!" cried the youiig Eie'tatehant as we floated under the main chains of the brigantine. "In oars! Rook on there for'ard! Follow me now, but be wary," He sprang into the channels. I was at his heels, and the rest of our party scrambled up after us. We cleared the rail and stood in- boards. The air was heavy with smoke, and all abaft the main mast was obscured by the hovering, crimson-tinged clouds; but forward the decks lay plain enough to the view, and I saw at a glance they were deserted. I looked about me for any dead bodies, or signs of, a struggle, but saw none. Our men began roafaing about the decks, but in a cautious manner, as though with certain misgivings. Suddenly one of them who had strolled to- wards the forecastle called out: "1 believe there arc men shut in down here, sir. There's a sound of knocking under the forehatch." "na exclaimed the Lieutenant, and we went forward. The hatch was a small, square scuttle, fastened down by an iron cross-bar. whose ends fitted upon staples and were secured by pins. A noise of knocking upon the under side of this was quite audible, together with the muffled sound of m'en's voices. "Open that hatch!" cried the officer. Two men stooped, removed the iron bar. and raieed the cover. A rush of insufferably close and foetid air made us all involuntarily bad: away from the coamings. "Water, master, for Heaven's sake!" gasped a voice o,t of the black depths. There is something which deeply stirs the sailor in this appeal. Thre was a scramble for tha scuttle-butts, and four men came hurrying up with as many dippers filled. How many of you are there?" inquired the Lieutenant, after the dipper had been cast, belc-w'. Nine, sir," replied the voice, feebly. "How many are living I can't say. We ran below to escape the murdering villains, and they clapped the hatch on, shutting as dowd ipt this sweltering hole." As he spoke, he came slowly up the ladder and emerged on to the deck, a tall, gaunt- looking figure in the ruddy sheen. Three others shortly followed him, all breathing deep. They came to a stand, blinking at the flames. "My precious eyes!" growled one of them. smearing his forehead with the back of his hand. "What cursed ruffians to clap ??s under hatches, and set the ship on f1ie!" Better see to your mates," said tITe officer in command. Where can we get a lantern?" There's a slush lamp down there," replied one of the men, "but it's burnt -out. There's oi! in the caboose; I'll trim it." Is there a hose on board? Aye, sir. in the long-boat." "Come, my lads, and rig the pump. We may get the flames under." The fire gave plenty of light to see to work by The hose was speedily stretched along, and in a few minutes the pump-brakes were clanging briskly, and a clear stream was gushing upon the flames. Meanwhile the fore- castle lamp had been lighted and the re- mainder of the imprisoned men discovered lying in various parts of the stifling fore- castle, senseless with symptons of asphyxia. The story told by the poor fellows exactly agreed with the narrative of the man we had picked up. They said that when the pirates came swarming aboard they tumbled below to save their lives, having seen their mate struck down. The hatch-cover was immediately banged to, and battened atop of them. We found that the captain was also missing, and guessed him to have been flung overboard along with the body of the ma te. For a long while our men battled sturdily with the flames, and slowly, but surely, got the better of them. It was about an hour or so before dawn that I took notice of a good deal of flashing, as of sheet lightning, atvay down in the soifcth-aast, accompanied by low. thunderous mutterings. The Sub-Lieutenant said it was an electric storm, and would pro- bably mean a breeze from that quarter, but I had a notion of my own about it. The last flickering tongues of flames expired hissing and amid clouds of steam, just as the greor* streaks of dawn came sifting out upon thf darkness in the east. The cabin had beer fairly well burnt out, and the deck at. thai spot charred through from bulwark to bulwark, so that it was necessary to crawl along the waterways to reach the wheel. By the time that daylight, had broadened sufficiently to reveal the face of the ocean, we had trimmed sail, and were standing along the course the Wave had taken. The sun rose upon a wide and brilliant morning. I gazed eagerly at the sea ahead, where the horizontal rays shot athwart the deep, flash- ing its surface into rippling gold; and sure enough, as I had expected, upon the far-off rim of the ocean lay the Wave, a mere gleam- ing toy. wit-h mother-'o-pearl sails, and the Pigaxoon floating motionless alongside, clearly her prize. Such was naval life in Antillean waters is the 'forties. THE END. MONDAY—" HER MAIDEN CARL" tar BXIA,
