PERSONAL PARS.I -
PERSONAL PARS. I BURCHELL, the Neath I Outside half, played with rare skill and judgment I against Bridgend, and he had a h&nd in nearly every I try scored. J. T. HOPKINS, Pontlottyn's I Rig-ht half-back, has taken up an appointment at I Llanelly, and his capable services are much missed by I his colleagues. RANDALL OWEN. Pontlottyn's I Is in exceptionally good form at present. He was the I target for some furious attacks at Hafod, but Randall is harder than the ordinary run of custodians. BEN BUN FORD, the Barry Dock I Albions' outside left, has been selected by the Cardiff =a District League Committee to play for I C&rdiS and District League team against Treharris on Good Friday. NED JONES I Made a welcome re-appearance last Saturday, aften an absence of several weeks. "Neddy," as he is familiarly called, made his presence felt with a vengeance. FRED JOHNSON, I Who played for Cadoxton Rovers and other local I teams in seasons gone by, has also been selected to play for the league team at centre half. Fred is now doing great things for Riverside (Cardiff). JOE WINMILL, Abertillery, I Has never before been in such form as he is at present. In the Tredegar match Joe's following-up work was simply marvellous, and he was ccrtainly the I most prominent forward on the field. JOHNNY THOMAS, Maesteg's Champion half, who was injured in the Aberavon match a couple of weeks ago, has made a welcome re- appearance, playing in tip-top form. Thomas Is con- sidered by his admirers to be second only to Dicky Owen as a half-back. WILLIAMS, the Mountain Ash I Wing three-quarter, was given a trial in tho centre against. Cwmbran. His display in his new pœi-! t iQn was not a qualified success. He performed a few smart things; but, taking his play on tho whole, one comes to the conclusion that he is not a centre, and is certainly more useful to hLi side when playing I on the win, HODGES, Newport, I Is still on the sick list with that dislocated finger, from an accident which happened at Bristol three weeks ago. The thing is a lot more troublesome than it was at firrt expected it would be. He was unable to turn out against Cardiff. Hi plaoe was taken by Conwa.y Williams. LLEWELLYN LLOYD, Newport, Has apparently quite finished his football career, save, it maybe, a vagrant appearance or two, such as he made when Newport went down to play Devonport Albion in Devonshire. If the need of a. good outside half in the match against Swansea did not appeal loudly enough, then it may fairly be assumed that nothing will tempt him again to re-appear.

FOOTBALL SKETCHES
FOOTBALL SKETCHES LAST MEETING OF OLD RIVALS Cardiff Lucky to Escape Defeat, j (By "FORWARD. ") (By "FORWARD.") But for one match, and only one, ttiat nas yet to be played I would be prepared to say that the season is at an end. That one match is fixed for Easter Wednesday on the Cardiff Arms Park. and the contestants will be the most expert exponents of Rugby foot- ball in South Wales. They will come to Car- diff that day in full battle array from the east and from the west, and by the awaken- ing of the old feudal spirit, which ie not dead but sleepeth, we hope to see such an exhibi- tion of football as will gladden our hearts and make us rejoice that the season haa made a glorious exit. The match of last year between the East and the West is remembered unto this day, and we cherish the recollection thereof a." the most brilliant and attractive display of the whole season. All this, you will say, is beside the mark, and has no con- nection with the la&t of the four games be- tween Cardiff and Newport. That is so, but a little diversion Ls, surely, excusable when one has to hitrp on the same old string for the fourth time. Three sketches have been pre- viously written on this same subject of New. port versus Cardiff, a,nd there is, I believe, just so much sympathy left in the world that a little can be spared me in being obliged to "tell the tale" again. There is one compensating advantage in the fact that the ta.le is worth the telling. As a preliminary it must be said that Cardiff deserved to lose, and that Newport, obviously, deserved to win. But the race was not to tho swift nor the battle to the strong. By a great stroke of luck the Cardiff men managed to patch up a, defence strong enough to meet the attack of the Usksiders. In saying this I do 'not mean that the aforesaid defence was good, but that. the attack was feeble. It may be many years before Newport get two equally favourable chances of scoring as they had on this occasion, and it passes ordinary comprehension how they were missed. In the last instance the Cardiff defence had been practically beaten, and Jack Evans had only to give the ball to WillieJLloweliyn to put him over for a certumty. But t?e ex.pontypool man allowed himself to be flurried by Gabe and gave such a wretched pass that it was quite impossible for Llewellyn to have done the trick. The other occasion was that when Cliff Pritchard gave a nice pass to Wetter, and when that player had only to take the ball and run over the line. But he failed to taie the ball, and there was a.n end of the opportunity. After eighty minutes' hard fighting the whistle sounded to a dnw, and the most ardent, the mot partisan supporter of the Cardiff club must have mustered with bated breath, "Lucky Cardiff." It has to be con- fessed that on paper Cardiff looked the stronger team but on the field the order wa-8 !——————————————————— reversed. The only two absentees were H. B. Winfield and Percy Bush, and since Saturday I have been wondering how many people out of the thousands who witnessed the match realised the fuU significance of Winheld's absence. It so happened that his under- study, F. Woods, was out of form, and did not "lu4hy i?.?lf justice. His fielding was slow and uncertain, and his kicking waa weak amd badly directed. As a consequence he kept his forwards ring up and down the tie throughout the game. D. J. Boots, at the other end, fielded safely, and never failed to find touch. The net effect of these two indi- vidual performancee was palpable in the relative condition of the two packs quite twenty minutes before the finish. The Car- diff eight had so far outrun themselves that they had no stomach for the serums, and allowed their opponents to heel out the ball as frequently as they liked. And, consider- ing their opportunities, it is astonishing that a first-class lot of backs should have failed to score. After nearly two months of inactivtty it was hardly to be expected that Gwyn Nicholls ould be on the top of his form, and people who are most ready to criticise are the most ready to forget as a rule. Gabe was also off colour, and to me it is simply amaz- ing how he has gone off his game since the Scottish international at Swansea. He does not seem to have recovered from that terrible shaking given him by the tumble for which Forrest was responsible on the cheap side touch-line. Gabe has also lost his old keen- ness, but he wilj more than recover it on the voyage out to Australia in a couple of months hence. What a happy little quartette will be Willie Llewellyn. Rhys Gabe, Cecil Biggs, and Percy Bush, and how one does envy them in being fixed up for such an out- ing. While envying them we are all anxious that they should come back to play better football than they ever played before. This is another digression, but these side issues are so tempting when the original text is such a poor one. It ought to be said, as a sort of redeeming qualification, that honours are easy on the season's play between Car- diff and Newport, and, aa far as I can judge, this result Ls a perfectly eqlaiuble one. W bile Cardiff did not deserve to lose the first match at Newport by that dropped goal which vrus not a goal Newport should certainly have won on the general run: of ;play last Saturday. Thus matters axe equaDsea as tar as these tas» msfnhss oowit TIM two drawn socia snowed fairly and truly that the teams were as evenly balanced as they couid be. There- I fore. there is. scarcely if any ground for com- plaint by either aide. Taking the four matches in a bunch, there has not been much real good football produced. West of the play has been confined to the forwards, and it seems to me that the bad. play of either team was not up to the stanuard of other years. Before this article is published the world.. will know the result of the Cardifl-Swaofcsa match down at St. Helen's this afternoon. Should the verdict read in favour of Swansea* as it probably will, the Easter \Vedce.«dajr match will be made all the more interesting. Whv? Well, because th? West side will be composed almost entirely of Swansea plars. while the East side will be a coalition of all the Eastern forces, with reinforcements from the London Welsh. It is no secret that the Swansea people feel ag-grieved over the ae!eQo tion of the Welsh international team this season. and it is equally well known that they are determined to show in this match that the real football genius of Wales is located in the West. We shall see. Last season, it will be remembered, the East won by the bare margin of a dropped goal, for which Cochlin was responsible, and on that occa- sion they had Gabe playing for them. Gabe will play with Nicholls on the East side this time, and the two wings will be Willie Llewellvn aud Teddy Morgan. A formidable line of three-quarters, it must be admitted, and I am one of those who look forward with ea.gerne>ss to their display against. the Swansea back division.
HINTS AND CRITICISMS.
HINTS AND CRITICISMS. By "Old Heathen." » ——— » Mr. Gil. Evans, tihe popular referee, giw* a novel instance of the vagaries of Rugby rules. Aceording to Rule 7, he says, a player can become off-side behind his own goal-line, and, that being so, what, position must a. plavcr occupy when one of his own side makes a mark on the verge of the dead-ball line? Now. important and embarrassing as thirf question undoubtedly is, I don't believe it. has ever been given serious consideration by. the powers that be. Invariably, in-goals are surrounded by formidable railings. amd ty is. therefore, impossible to keep behind the bail. But the player who takes the kick is in an even worse predicament, for his opponents are entitled to line up at the spot on which, he made his mark! It is, of course, a 10 to 1 chance against such an event happening, but. I think the Rugby Union could not do bettor than have the present rule altered to enabia a referee xo order "a scrimmage five 30AVA out." Jo&riafe ov a relish record t applied ia* by a friend, Rooth hA" a disticguwhwd redanflfr as a Cardiff Second league team. Apaurfa from their performance in their own division, they have tipped the apple-carts of four Firet Division teams in surprising fashion, and they 30180 pushed Gant.on to a draw in the Westerners' own stronghold. To all appear- ances, they are now the undisputed cham- pione of the Second Division, and this meana promot-ion to the Senior League next term. But if what I hear be correct—and I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the, eta-temeoit—the Roath team of next, eeasou will he bnt a shadow of itseLf, for several of the players have signified their intention of joining South Wales League teams. ThAi6 if true, is to be regretted. Roath exhibited their finest form last Satur- day against Llanbradaoh Reserves, at Llaai- bradach, for they won in a canter by lave goals to one. Each of the forwards scored, with the exneption of Court, who, it may be said, was out of his usual position. Garter, the Llanbradach "keeper," wae rendered hors-de-combat in the second half, and his absence, no doubt, handicapped his Bide. I am glad to bear that George Simmoods was once more in demon fettle. and I consider him to be one of the cleverest right ha If-books in Cardiff. Riverside have to meet Barry Dock Albion for the BeT-aii Shield final on April 16, and I suppose they will now take things easy in view of that engagement. Anyhow, they shirked a serious match at Splott Park last Saturday, and the Singletons gained two points, which have made their position M champions secure. I regret to have to confirm my reoeot hint among "Korner Kicks" concerning the Camerons. The news that they have smashed is too true. I cannot conceive the cause to be a financial breakdown, neither can I attri- bute it to business calls upon the players. It appears to me purely and simply a lethargic case of "Jjet's chuck it!" Koiitb Park seems likely to be made a bib ship-shape for the coming crioket season. A portion has already been enclosed, and grass is actually encouraged therein. But. to iliv mind, the ground is more in need of good drains than a covering of graw. T%e centre of the plot, too. has sunk eo deeply that tba slightest fail of radn is sufficient to form pool, and until this part is rawed oriokctera had better keep away from it. The Direct Trading team turned out ON Wednesday at Roath Park to oppose Rontfti Wednesday, but. to their disappointment, the Wednesdays dad not appear. With their usual promptitude, t.be "Sons of Rest" filled the gap, and a very good game resulted. The Oorintihians, I aim informed, deserved, a draw on merit against Llanbradach, for Mullins gave a simple penalty in the cloeinf? stages, and the "Oorries'' were also handi- ca.pped by the absence of Hoad. Still, Llan- bradach, aided by John Reynolds, of A Villa fame, gave a fine exposition. Reynolds' presence among the villagers hae worked wondere, and the cloae run Uiey gave Aber. dare is an instance of it.
