[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] HIS OPPORTUNITY. By M. LOUISE CUMMINS, I Miriam h-,d drifted into the afternoon feet- tival concert with the vain hope that here for an hoar might lie forgetfulness. Hardly had she taken her place when it rushed upon her that scarcely a month had passed since Hallet-t and she were sitting almost in that -very spot. They had been late-eveT, the laughing argument in the hall at home which caused the delay came back to her with a new pang- and the slight c-onfusion caused by finding their seats occupied had fixed the numbers in her mind. She looked down at the check in her lap and saw that she sat in identically the same place as she had done then. Her throat felt choking as her eyes tllrnd slowly to the empty chair at her side. Everything inanimate seemed to have entered into LEAGUE with memory against her. Suddenly the dark head reared itself with eyes looking fixedly ahead, their cold blue belied by the swift rash of colour to her TEMPLES and hands closed convulsively upon each other. She would have given all she pos- i sessed on earth to appear entirely uncon- scious of the tall, broad-shouldered ngure which moved up the aisle and quietly took I the place at her side. Quite oblivious of the fact that she held her programme upside down. Miriam studied I it absorbedly, but her fingers shook so that it fluttered from her grasp to the floor. There was nothing in Hallett's manner as he stooped and picked it up, restoring it with a slight bow, to show that he WAS aware of the presence of the woman to whom three weeks before he had been engaged. The eyes of each sought the platform again with appa- rent indifference. I For on Tschaikowski's "beautiful "Pathetic" symphony fell on unheeding ears. Then came the intermission, and with it the oppor- tunity of Archibald Frederic McKenzie. As quiet. as the proverbial lamb, he had sat on his mother's lap right in front of Miriam during what, to him, so fresh from heaven's own music, was a poor confusion of sounds. He owed his pesence at the concert at all to the fact that the same twenty-tliree-year-old mother had that morning her third encounter within a month w:th the last of as many incompetent nursemaids, and indignantly decided to take charge of her small son herself. He had rewarded her by behaving in A way that could not have drawn a frown from the sternest of his long line of Scottish I ancestors. But with t.be intermission he mounted on the small space of chair seat which the drawing aside of maternal skirts left at his disposal, and looked at Miriam with eyes whose rollicking blue said as plainly as words, "Now we can have a. good time!" Plainly entranced with Miriam's beauty he wrinkled np his small nose until the lifted upper lip showed a row of diminutive white teeth. The girl leaned forward, her fa.ce softening involuntarily, and patted the hand which held so tightly to the chair back. As she did so an usher moved up the aisle and EPOKE to the mother. Archib-ild Frederic was immediately set upon his sturdy four-year-old feet. and given to understand that his dream of bliss was over. But the ardent young Scot had no inten- tion of being torn from his divinity so easily. One small hand went out toward Miriam. The protruded under lip heralded unmistakable distress. With all his might and main he resisted the gentle urging of the maternal arm. Let me take care of him until you come back—if you are coming back?" Miriam leaned forward quickly. Oh, thank you! But won't it be too much trouble. Some one wants to speak to me at the door." With a rapid mental picture of having to propel her small eon, resisting, down the aisle, the mother gasped her relief. Archi- bald Frederic had already setttled the matter by placing one hand on Hallett's knee and c-rowding past him to Miriam 6 lap. But once securely perched there his whole attention—with the fickleness of Touth-was immediately transferred to the stern-looking young man next him. He regarded Hallett fixedly for a moment, as though he was a very poor riddle, then leaned forward. '00 mad? o." Hallett's lips twitched. Then he added, Only very sorry." "Wha' fo*? "Bee-am", I quarrelled with some one whom I love very dearly." It was a bold stroke. His heart almost stood still when he had spoken. He did not dare to glance at Miriam. Quarrelled was plainly beyond Archibald Frederic. He pondered over it for a moment, then came back to something he understood. 'OO—bad? Yes." 'Oo say—"on say—'oo Yes." 'Cause 'hen I bad an' I say-I so'y— —Mummy Dee say—she say-" I He looked round, swallowing hard, bringing his small palms together in the effort to express himself as he wished. Suddenly the hands parted, his arms encircled as much of Miriam AS they couid encompass, the soft, red mouth was pressed to her bending face. "Mummy Dee say-t,hat! he finished triumphantly, facing Hallett. Miriam had caught him to her bosom with a choking breath. Where were all :he things which had seemed so iraporta-nt. BO vital, three weeks before? She was letting the beet good of life. with all its tender pos- sibilities. slip from her. and beside it nothing else mattered. The sweet, childish influence was like a breath from God's own heaven in the fa-ces of these two people who had quarrelled, and, because of their very love for each other, hurt each other so cruelly. Hallett turned, his arm across the back of Miriam's chair. • "Perhaps—if you told her I was sorry—" his voice was husky—"that life is like—" he checked himself, remembering the child, for, though his words were to him, his eyes were on Miriam's face—"that it is like death with- out her!" With the unerring intuition of childhood, Archibald Frederic knew instinctively to whom he referred. His hand went up and patted the face above him, coaxingly. "He say-he so'y," he pleaded. As his mother returned, murmuring her thanks and apologies, and lifted him from Miriam's lap, he looked back eagerly. "He say-he so'y," he repeated earnestly. Hallett sprang to his feet. "Allow me to carry him out for you!" "If you will be so kind. I have to catch a c ar- Picking up her train, the mother followed in the wake of the tail man who carried her small son so securely and easily against his broad shoulder. But Archibald Frederic's eyes were still fixed on the top of a dark head, now fast being hidden from his view. "He say-he so"y! H-E—say—he The closing of the door shut out the last word, but Archibald Frederic had had his opportunity, and used it. The orchestra v,ere returning to their places when Hallett came back. "Dearest!" His hand closed over the one beside him, his eyes compelling the tear-wet ones. "Take me out," she breathed quickly. "No one saw what took place when thew. reached the small corridor behind tne stagre— where they had no business to be. as it was intended only for musicians—except a little French violinist, who had lingered to re-place a broken string. Hallett, entirely oblivious of his surround- ings. wa", holding the girl's upturned, quiver- ing face between his hands. "Then—Mummy Dee say that!" He illustrated with much satisfaction. The little violinist considerately turned HU back, in case it might occur again. "Cela se fait lui-rreme lie muttered with a shrug. "Pourquoi est—elle si eharmaiite.
ITIM REGAN'S TREE.
TIM REGAN'S TREE. By OTHO B. SENGA. It. WAS a Christma-s tree, of course. What other tree has any special interest for a, ten- year-old boy on Christmas Eve? Particularly a boy with two little sisters who had never even seen a Christmas tree, much less shared in the joy of possessing one. Tim had helped the man who sold the trees -holding the horse, running up to the doorg to ask the people if they would buy a tree or some Christmas wreatlf;. and calling at. the top of his shrill, young voice to let every- one know how very cheaply these especial trees and wreaths could be bought. The man had given Tim a tree, in addition to the ten cents promised, for his afternoon's services. The tree was very email, and was qtnte brown on one side, besides being broken almost in two in the middle. But it could be mended with twine, a.nd the- brown side turnefl. towards the wail, and it would be a fine Christmas tree. indeed. And he would spend the whole of that ten cents for presents for Nellie and Xora. In fancy hoe saw the tree bright and gay. almost lik" the big. beauTiful ones he had seen that afternoon in the grarid houses. Vi here he had carried the wreaths. Intent OIl the delightful picture of hia imagination Tim did not observe that he was dragging hi tree directly in front of a tall young man. who was rushing into the Union Station, his gaze directed so anxiously to the big clock OVERHEAD that he quite overlooked the small boy and the dragging tree at his feet. Tim escaped the collision by a hair'. bre? dth. The young man. tripped by the t!"e, 8.um hiNt falling on one knee, but I recovered himsdf instantb-. and rose, while Tim. with true boy instinct, dodged aside, ducking his head to avoid the expected blow. The young man laughed. I'm not going to hurt you," he said, pleasantly, hurry and help me pick up MY things." His suit case had been thrown with sufficient violence to force it open, and several toilet, articles lay scattered about. They both stooped, and the hurrying throng surged to one side for a minute, some scolding at the delay, others laughing. When the silver mounted trifles had been restored to the case the man looked agair; at, the clock, muttering, ruefully, I've lost that train." Mad?" Cjtreried Tim, looking up at the per* plexed. h a n dso m E f ace. Not now; I was, just for a second; but it isn't worth while," adding as if THINKING aloud, "life is too short, and there are too many big things lie stood, looking back at the elevated- station from which he had just come, as if trying to reach a decision. Tim touched his coat, timidly. Say, Mister." he said awkwardly, I'm-I'm dead sorry, yer know." It was the first attempt at an apology he had ever made in his rough, young life; and he didn't quite understand the new impulse. The man looked down- regarding him earnestly; noting the patched garments, the gaping shoes and the broken tree clutched closely by the stem. I'm afraid." he said kindly, "that I'm the one who ought to apologise I've broken your tree." No. yer didn't," cried Tim. -eagerly, it was bruk when the man guv it to me. But. I kin mend it. and I've got ten cents to buy things for it." "Indeed!" and the young man APPEARED ,ni?,nde, -of the F;im. surprised at the magnitude of the sum, I suppose it's for a little brother or & sister,, maybe?" Yer didn't think it was for me grand- children, did yer?" with a street boy's sarcasm. It's for me two little sisters, an' they'll think it's bully. Good-night. Mister. "Wait a minute—what's your name?" "Tim. Wha-tsyours?" Same as yours." "Tim Began?" Not Regan, but Tim—Timothy Fordham. Have you had experience in buying things for Christmas trees, Tim?" Tim paused. He feared his new acquaint- ance might be "jollying him. but the grava fa-ce and kind eyes were re-assuring. "Yer see." he said confidentially. "this'U be the first Christmas tree them two kids ever had. but I've seen A bloomin' lot of trees to-day. and I know I kin fix it." I'm sure yon can. Tiin. but th2r("s nothing like experience to help out. Do ycu live near here" "Yup, 'bout five minutes' walk." "Well. Tim. I've missed my train, and the evening is on my hands. Carry your tree home; I'll wait here, and we'll go together to buy the things. I've had experience." Tim dashed excitedly away. The rest was like a wonderful dream, in which dolls, toys,, picture-books, candy and nuts, and bright- coloured ornaments and "make believe" snow, such as Tim's eager eyes had seen on the fine trees that day. figured extensively. They were both loaded with bundles when Tim led the way to the cheap tenement he called home. "Sh-h-h!" he cautioned; "them two kids ia asleep, and we want to fix the tree 'thout wakin' 'em." Swiftly and silently they worked. Ford- ham's skilful fingers showed "experience," and Tim's heart fairly ached with gratitude. "Ain't it bully?" he whispered, ecstatically. "You bet." answered the other, dropping unconsciously into the slang of boyhood; "wheras your mother?" "She ain't comin' till late; she's gone to clean up Miss Sherwood's studio, after what they call a 'spread. The woolly dog in Fordham's hand dropped to the bare floor with a crash. "Oh, gee!" said Tim, looking over to the 1cl. apprehensively, but no visions of Santa Claus haunted the little sieepers, and they slept on undisturbed. The big fellow grasped Tim by the shoulders, and hurried out into the tiny entry. "Tell me again," he commanded, "where your mother is?" With pity for the other's stupidity. Tim explained carefully, saying the words slowly and distinctly. There's an artist girl—named Sherwood. She has big, grand rooms—called a studio. Mother cleans 'em every day. There's a show there to-night-a spread, she called it. Mother's gone to clean up after the big bugs goes away. SCf>?" Fordham nodded. He had been hurrying awa.y from that st-udio. and from the cold answer of the "nartist girl," when he collided with Tim's tree. He had known Eleanor Sher- wood but a few months. An uncontrollable impulse had that night forced from his lips the love that was in his heart, nd he had been refused—refused decidedly, coldly. "I really believe she classes me with that crowd of fortune-hunters that have followed ?hIer about ever since it became known how wealthy she is. I wish she'd lose every dollar; then I'd step up and say-" His cast'es were overthrown by a woman's voice calling from below, "Timmie, bring the lamp, so Miss Sherwood can see." "It's mother." whisperer! Tim. "Quick! Where can I hide?" exclaimed Fordham. "Round there. Hurry!" Fordham squeezed his stalwart, form into the narrow space, and fairly held his breath, while Tim's mother and Miss Sherwood came up the stairs, followed by Miss Sherwood's coachman. Then he hurried away* "Im glad I missed that train," he thought. "I'm glad I didn't go. There's no use GIVING up like this. It's a. cowardly sort of a- fellow that ca.n't ask a girl a second time. I'll manage someway to convince her tha.t it's the girl, and not the money. I want. Heavens! I've so much of my own that I don't know wha.t to do with it. She can give hers away if she wants to. I wish she would. Why couldn't I have known her when she was poor, before that old Australian unelp-11 He stopped to distribute a generous handful of silver among a little group of belated news- boys. and did not see the Sherwood carriage as it rolled noiselessly by. But it's occnpa.nt had seen him, a.nd her quick eyes had noticed his act. The next morninc a note was brought to Fordham, and his face flushed, and his heart throbbed as he recognised Eleanor Sherwood's firm, beautiful writing. "I thought you selfish, cold, and hard to the poor, and I was poor so long that I know what poverty means. I was at Mrs. Regan's last night. I saw the t,. Tims tree?and yours. I have a.
