[BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT—COPYBIGHT. J VALCREE'S DIAMONDS —— 0 By FRED COLEMAN. I. Frank Egertcn gait in his lodgings a prey to all those bitter and harassing feelings which ia-ck of money calif up in the mind of a man accustomed to enjoy a share of the good things of this life, and whose own actions have landed him in a me" For Egerton was in a fix. and a very serious one. This is the he said; if I do not obtain E300 by the 10th of June I am ruined. and will lo6e my situation. Is there any chance of my bedng abJe to obtain the money? and the answer which roee to his lipe was. None whatever. I can neither beg nor borrow the money, but I might steal it: yes, I believe I am capable of doing that. Let me see. there is another way. I might marry a rich widow. There is Mrs. Eiggins, 3lie is sa if she is a day, and would aece-pt me; but her income is only £5Q\J a year, and I would not sacrifice myself for that. No, Egerton, my boy. your personal appearance is worth more." With a self-satisfied smile he drew himself up and critically scanned 1 his figure in the mirror. Having thus given vent to his feelings, he collected the different accounts, all of which contained demands for payment, and thrust them into his desk, when a letter which he had not prevrugly seen attracted his atten- tion. Taking it up, he glanced curiously at the handwriting, recognising it as that of hie cousin, Mrs. Sherwin. Mrs. Sherwin was a rich woman, who had been married quite recently, and who had just returned from spending her honeymoon abroad; and the letter contained an invita- tion for Frank to spend a few weeks at Craig- myle House, her country residence in Berwick- shire. "Very good of Effie." thought Egerton; "she always was sensible, but I never could under- stand her marriage to Sherwin, who is cer- tainly a peculiar fellow, as she knew very little about him. So Mrs. Valcree is to be there, and her niece. Miss Power." he went cn. "I remember Norah well-a, pretty girl, with a dash of Irish blood in her veins, but poor and entirely dependent on her aunt, who is sure to marry again. Mrs. Valcree must have an income of at least ten thousand a year. She is a jolly woman, and not so I old, after all. Tee. Egerton, you must go I for that ten thousand pounds, heart and soul, and. what's more, you must win." Thus reasoned Frank Egerton; and a few days after the above he was comfortably settled at Craigmyle House. Another week passed, and Frank saw the 10th of June approaching rapidly, and he resolved that on the very first opportunity that offered he would ask Mrs. Valcree to be his wife. Nor was the desired opportunity long in presenting itself, for one day after luncheon Mrs. Sherwin and Xorah had driven out to make a call, while Mr. Sherwin had retired to his room, and frs. Valcree was in the drawing-room alone. With the look of one who was inarchirg to victory, Frank entered the drawing-roorn. Dear me. I thought you had driven out, Mr. Egerton. with Mrs. Sherwin and orah." t said Mrs. Valcree. evidently surprised. Mrs. Va-lcrea, I have something to say to you," he began, and the widow settled her- self more comfortably in her chair. I have long had a deep admiration for you, a love that cannot be concealed," and sink- ing on his knee he implored her with all a lover's enthusiasm to be his wife. "Good gracious! Is the boy mad?" exclaimed Mrs. Yalcrce, holding up her hands. Why, I am old enough to be your mother." and the jolly widow burst into a loud laugh. Poor Frank rose to his feet. looking very foolish indeed. It is not fair to laugh at the love of an honest man," he said. Mr. Egerton, it is of no use talking that sort of nonsense to me when there are so many young girls about; I am not a. fool." But Frank waited to hear no more; he hurried from the room utterly crestfallen and abashed. His dream of wealth was over, and ruin approaching with rapid steps. Mrs. Valcree sat for some time longer in the drawing-room, then returned to her chamber, where she laid out the dress she was to wear that evening, also her diamonds. Norah had gone for a walk in the park, and when somp distance from the house she! saw Frank Egerton approaching. He was hurrying along a footpath that led towards the railway station. He did not observe her, although lie passed within a few yards of where she was standing; but Norah saw that he was very pale, his lips set, and his eyes shining. Wondering what had happened, Norah returned to the house, and having dressed for dinner, made her way to the drawing- room, where she found irs. Sherwin. I rs. Sherw 'n A few minutes later Mrs. Valcree rushed into the room, exclaiming: Effie! Norah: my diamonds are gone; I shall never see them again! My lovely diamonds, and sinking on a chair she clasped her hands on her face and burst int,o tears. The announcement of the theft fell like a thunderclap on Mrs. Sherwin and Norah, who did their utmost to quieten Mrs. Valcree's fears, assuring her that it was impossible the diamonds could be stolen, and soon the whole household was assembled and a vigor- ous search instituted, but without any result. Mr. Sherwin was the only one who retained his presence of mind "Where is Frank?" aslied Mrs. Sherwin, suddenly, and her husband stated that he had been called to Edinburgh, but had said that he would write to his cousin soon after his arrival. Mr. Sherwin also declared that it would be useless to put the matter into the hands of the local police, who would be sure to make a mess of it, but stated that he would run up to Edinburgh and obtain the service of a skilled detective, which statement appeased Mrs. Valcree to some extent. Meanwhile Frank Egerton had reached his lodgings in Edinburgh, where a number of letters were awaiting him. Amongst th-em was a large official-looking document which a-ttra-cted his attention, the contents of which he read with isurprise-,al-niost. con- sternation. "Heaven!" he exclaimed. "What a fool I ha-e been. I have ruined myself. Oh, God. if I had only waited." II. The detective came down from Edinburgh the next morning. and the servants and every inmate of the house were examined. but all his efforts failed to find a clue to the thief. He asked a great number of questions regarding Frank Egerton; but if he had any suspicions he kept them to him- self, pursuing his inquiries in a. business-like, self-possessed manner. Next day Mr. sherwin was summoned to London on important business connected with his wile's affairs, and was still detained there when the detective, having returned from a visit to Edinburgh, requested an interview with Mrs. Valcree. They were closeted in the libra-iy for some time, and when Mrs. Valcree joined Norah she was considerably agitated. I shall never see my lovely diamonds a.gain," she said, drying the tears from her eyes. Oh. aunt, how dreadful! Has the detective discovered anything?" Yes." replied Mrs. Valcree, grimly. "We have discovered the thief." Norah s brown ey,,s were fixed on her aunt in a questioning manner, while the latter went on: The scoundrel, to ftrst ask me -to mariy. him, and when I refused, to go and steai I my diamonds." Aunt Valcree. whom do you mean?" demanded Noah, every vestige of colour leaving her cheeks. Simply that Frank Egerton is the thief," was the answer, which caused Norah to burst into tears. Oh, aunt. thif is too terrible: it can't be true. You do not believe that Frank could have done this." My dear child, the evidence has con- Tinced Ef, and when 1 fiild my suspicions agreeing with the opinion of this eminent detective, there can be no further doubt." t The tears of Norah were flowing fast, and I when she re-called the expression she had seen on the features of Frank that evening as he hurried towards the station, she dared I not doubt her aunt's words. Row is it that he has suddenly become possessed of so much money?" continued Mrs. Valcree. Who v.as likely to die and leave him a fortune? It is quite evident ihat be stole my diamonds, and I will never see them again. They were handsome, and ou are aware. Noah, that everybody envi-ed them." Aunt. we cannot stay longer here." said the gi-,71, and to this the widow absented, declaiing that they must leave at once. In accordance with this resolution the two ladies said good-bye to Mrs. Sherwin, and returned to Edinburgh. For a time Mrs. Valerce was inconsolable over her diamonds. and would accept no society invitations. She insisted, however, upon Norah accepting an invitation to a ball, which was to be given in the Assembly Eoom, and which was to be a, very fashionable affair; and her niece, under the care of a Mrs. Maitland, a friend of Mrs. Valcree, went to the bail. Searosiy had Noah entered the ballroom when she observed Frank Egerton standing close to the waii. A second glance, and she saw that he was looking very moody and thoughtful. A crowd of admirers gathered round Miss Power, but Frank did not join them, and her programme wa" rapidly filled. He remained where he was. and saw partner after partner lead her up to dance. The beauty of Norah had never appeared to him with such force as it did to-night. It was not until, late in the evening that he sought Norah. who returned his greeting very coldly. Frank did not appear to notice this, but inquired after Mrs. Valcree. and strove to make mmself as pleasant as possible. Somewhat piqued by his audacity, she said: I daresay you will have heard that aunt has lost her diamonds?" Lost her diamonds," he repeated, with a laugh. -No, I have not heard." Looking straight into his face Norah con- tinued Yes; they were stolen upon the very afternoon upon which you left CraigmyJe House." At this moment a gentleman came up and claimed Miss Power for the next dance, thus preventing any reply from Frank. Several hours afterwards, and just as Norah was about to take her departure, he again came forward to her side, and said: I am sorry to hear of Mrs. Yalc.ree's loss. I think it is my duty to call upon her, now that she has returned to town." Her dark eyes flashed angrily. Of course, Mr. Egerton. your interest in Mrs Valcree, or the footing upon which you stand towaxd her. is nothing to me." orah, I do not understand you to-night. Why cannot we be friends as formerly?" I think. Mr. Egerton, that your 0*1 thoughts will furnish an answer to yonr question." she replied, and with a haughty inclination of her head. she followed Mrs. Maitland to their carriage. One afternoon a. few days later the two ladies were sweated in the drawing-room, when Norah. happening to glance from the window, exclaimed: Why, aunt, here is Frank Egerton at tjie gate," and without waiting for any reply left, the room. A few minutes later Frank entered the drawing-room, the widow rmeting him with bare civility. The young man returned her greeting, then, in the cool-est ma-nner possible, asked if she had recovered lier- diamonds. No." replied Mrs. Valcrcc. quickly; "the ma.n who stole them is too wide awake for that. I will never set my eyes upon them again." A pause ensued, then Frank said. calmly: I hope, Mrs. Valcree. that you have for- given,' at least forgotten, my foolish escapade at Craigmyle House." "What does the handsome scamp mean?" thought the widow, while Frank went on: I have no intention to excuse myself, but must trust to your good nature for forgive- ness." Well, it was bad enough to propObe marriago to a woman twice your age; but, Mr. Egerton, if you have done nothing worse be thankful," she answered. Frank felt that he was not progressing, and at her words his ch-seks flushed slightly; then after a pause he again recurred to the diamonds, inquiring if any clue had been found that was likely to lead to the arrest. of the criminal. His coolness exasperated Mrs. Valeree, and she answered boldly: Yes, the detective whom I employed has traced the matter home to him: and indeed I could point- him out now. You talK, Mrs. Valcree. as if I had stolen your diamonds." he answered, rising to his feet. And who eire could have done it but you?" eh-e retorted. "I have positive proof." The expression on th3 dark features of Frank became st-ern and gloomy. For a second or two he stood with his eyes fixed on Mrs. Valcree. then without a word either of explanation or defence he walked from the loom. As he ws.s crossing the hall he encountered Norah. Miss Power," he said. your avift is suffering from an extraordinary hallucination reearding her diamonds. Does the same disease afflict you?" Norah glanced up at his pale. stern features. Instinctively she knew what he meant. Her lips quivered, and Eha answered slowly but distinctly. "No!" then tied up- stairs. After this Mrs. Valcree was surprised to find that Norah did not share her belief in the guilt, of Frank Egerton; not only so, but she began to find excuses for him, and even to plead his cause. The relationship between aunt and niece, therefore, became rather strained. Such was the staie of matters when one morning both ladies were equally surprised by a servant announcing Mr. Egerton and frs. Sherwin. Only a few weeks had elapsed since Mrs. Sherwin was a happy wife, a kind a.nd gentle hostess, leaning ior support on a husband who adored her. But a few days had wrought a great change in Mrs. Sherwin, and Mrs. Valcree could hardly believe her eyes when she saw Effie. pale and t-&arfui. dressed in deep mourning, and bent as one upon whom a great .sorrow had fallen. The widow's sympathy went OUt to Effie. She led her to a couch, and gently sought an explanationn of this sudden grief. "Tell her, Frank; I CaDDot," said Mrs. Sherwin. With a glance at Norah. Frank turned toward Mrs. Valcree. and taking a pmall leather case from his pocket handed it to the widow, saying: Mrs. Valcree. I have great pleasure in being the means of restoring yotir diamondf to you; examine them and you will discover that they have not suffered in any way during the time they have been out of your keeping. The thief was a man who called himself Edward Sherwin, and who has also managed to take away the bulk of my cousin's fortune. He was arrested at Liverpool on board a. steamer about to sail for America, and the diamonds were found in his possession," I said Frank. But the arms of Mrs. Valcree were round the injured wife. My dear. I would rather have lost them than that this trouble should have fallen on you. and the shame which exposure will bring." e.T There wll be no exposure." continued Frank, quietly. Mr. Sherwin died in prison." I Gently Mrs. Valcree led Effie from the room, and Prank and Norah were left alone. .'1 have cleared my character, Norah, and now come t-o you for forgiveness." My forgiveness can have very little weight; you see, Mr. Egerton, I am neither rich nor old," ghe answered, with a flash from her dark eyes. Frank's cheeks became crimson You are rich in your youth and beauty, and my uncle's death has given me wealth. Come, Norah, let us be friends. I will never err in the future as I did in the paft." The eyes of Norah twinkled mischievouely, Airs.- Valcree's experience inight-I Spare me," he interrupted, and putting his arm round hsr drew her close to ht8 side. And Norah, with many coy srailig and blushes, forgaw him.
