The Greek author and historian Thucydides (c.460 BC - c.395 BC) is best known for his history of the 27-year Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens. Generally regarded as one of the first true historians, he places a high value on eyewitness testimony, having assiduously interviews participants about the events he recorded and consulted written documents to support the facts. The work was translated by the eminent Italian humanist Lorenzo Valla (1407?-1457).
